Franks' Envoy!
A torrential rain fell.
Just as Duncan was preparing to lead his army in search of an opening, the sudden downpour forced him to temporarily halt his offensive. The roads in Gaul during this era were in terrible condition; once it rained, they turned into muddy tracks everywhere. The bad news was that the cavalry would be heavily affected. The good news was that the Huns' cavalry would be affected even more.
In weather like this, the Huns would basically not move either. Their army was stationed in a place called Baron, which Attila had massacred half a month ago.
"If we fight after the rain, we'll have to study the terrain carefully. A cavalry charge could easily get bogged down in the mud."
"And then be surrounded and hacked to death by infantry."
In the early years, when the Empire fought several thousand Sarmatian Elite Heavy Cavalry, both men and horses became stuck in the mud. They could not even crawl back out.
The General's Guard under Duncan's command were all heavily armored cavalry, while the rest were mostly light cavalry.
The good news was that the Hun Horse Archers would be unable to ride at full speed as well. In an exchange of arrows, Duncan's Welsh Archers could even hold a slight advantage. If mounted archers switched to fighting on foot with bows, they could not outshoot proper infantry archers.
Footsteps sounded outside the tent.
Clegane strode in, wiped the rainwater from his face, and dropped to one knee. "My lord."
"An envoy from the Franks has arrived."
Hmm?
Duncan looked up in confusion. He had not expected the news to travel so quickly. He had only routed a band of Hunnic Raiders the day before yesterday, yet an envoy from the Franks had already arrived
