Showdown (First Update)
The atmosphere in the small meeting room was a bit tense.
Li Shuyi's expression changed. The Spirit Realm Rules had repeatedly warned against revealing her identity as a non-native of the Spirit Realm, or she would bear the consequences!
She then looked at Bai Xiaowen.
Bai Xiaowen's expression remained calm.
For some reason, Li Shuyi's mood calmed down.
"When did Your Highness realize it?" Bai Xiaowen asked.
Nicholas said, "It was in Redleaf City that we first met through the Communication Rune Stone."
Bai Xiaowen asked, "Did Your Highness begin to suspect me after that?"
Nicholas shook his head. "No, but for someone as promising as you, I definitely need to get to know you a little better..."
Nicholas took a sealed report from the drawer, on which were written the words "Dio Skellboom".
"The first report was very brief, only mentioning Baron Dio Skellboom's past, never revealing any magical talent. His sister, Charlotte, was just an ordinary, delicate girl. However, during the battle of Redleaf City, many accounts mentioned that you were a powerful wizard, and your sister had become a formidable female warrior. The Transformation in between are simply too abrupt."
Bai Xiaowen nodded.
Nicholas continued, "And after you arrived at Blackrock Fortress, I observed you closely... Your military talent surprised me as well, and your tactical ideas differed greatly from our conventional tactical thinking. While novel and effective, they also seemed quite unconventional. According to records, Baron Dio Skellboom once studied at the Imperial Capital Noble Academy, but only his name is recorded in the archives; he didn't demonstrate any outstanding military talent..."
Nicholas smiled and concluded, "So, I'm certain you're a traveler from another dimension, and so is your sister. Don't be nervous... Travelers from other dimensions have appeared in other parts of the Empire before, and they've all been recorded in the Imperial Archives. You're not the first."
Bai Xiaowen let out a soft sigh, "Your Highness, no matter who I am, one thing remains unchanged. Everything I've done is to resist the Sinlands Coalition."
As an awakened individual who "enters with a primitive identity," it is sometimes unavoidable for their identity to be recognized by the indigenous people.
To gain substantial profits within a short period of ten days or so, one must act ostentatiously, which is certainly inconsistent with one's past behavior in identifying oneself. The more one is in front of the indigenous elites, the easier it is to be exposed.
In the Kane Plane, where interdimensional travel is a cultural phenomenon, figures like Prince Nicholas are practically second only to the emperor among the native inhabitants. They possess high intelligence, access to vast intelligence files, and have a history of awakened individuals being exposed...
It would be abnormal if it weren't discovered, okay?
Bai Xiaowen had considered the possibility of his identity being discovered, but he didn't think it was a big deal.
The reason lies in two words: the general trend.
If the human faction were to Suppression and suffocate the Remnants faction, then an interdimensional visitor like Bai Xiaowen would risk being captured and dissected for research. However, in the current Northern Frontier, the Remnants faction holds the advantage, and a considerable one at that!
In addition, Bai Xiaowen also demonstrated his value in the process of fighting against the Remnants of the Ming dynasty, and his reputation and prestige were genuine.
Even if Prince Nicholas had any curiosity about the alternate dimension, he wouldn't attack Bai Xiaowen and his companion now. In order to fight against the Remnant Allied Army and the Plague Undead, he needed to unite every bit of human strength.
"Yes, I've seen everything you've done," Nicholas said. "However, what I don't understand is why you, as a traveler from another dimension, would fight so hard for the human race?"
Bai Xiaowen revealed a profound expression. "Your Highness, because I am also Human Race."
Nicholas was silent for a moment, then walked over and shook Bai Xiaowen's hand. "Thank you."
"Of course, if I can receive some due reward while assisting Your Highness, I will not refuse," Bai Xiaowen said after coughing.
Li Shuyi revealed an expression that said, "I knew it."
Nicholas wasn't surprised; to him, it would be unsettling if Bai Xiaowen didn't make any demands. He readily agreed, "Okay, what do you want from me?"
"Your Highness, I am very interested in the Black Edge Knights Black Edge Knights have been collecting their oaths, but they are all incomplete versions. I hope to obtain a complete version."
Bai Xiaowen made an outrageous demand, asking for the Permanent Team-Building Item "Oath of Black Edge" right off the bat! If we could get it from Nicholas, we wouldn't need to do any side quests.
Nicholas frowned and said, "What you want is probably the magic scroll that contains the oath of the Black Edge Knights. Every newly joined Black Edge Knights signs their name on the magic scroll, and their oath thus has strong binding force. However, there is only one complete copy of the Oath of Black Edge Scroll, which is currently stored in the Imperial Capital and cannot be retrieved for you."
Bai Xiaowen had no choice but to settle for second best. "Then let's get a few more incomplete versions of the oath." He took out a "Broken Oath" and showed it to Nicholas.
"That's possible..." Nicholas said with a hint of sadness. "After I came to the Northern Frontier, some of the Black Edge Knights who followed me have fallen, but I have preserved their oaths. If they knew that these oaths could contribute to the Human Allied Army even after death, they would be very gratified."
After a pause, Nicholas said, "If you can help defend Blackrock Fortress and hold out until Imperial reinforcements arrive, I will give you all three oaths I have been keeping."
Bai Xiaowen received a notification that the mission had been updated:
"Main Quest: The Flames of Blackrock has been updated."
"Quest Reward: Broken Oath *3"
Originally, the reward for this S-Tier main quest was "unknown," meaning that Awakened Ones would need to negotiate with the natives to obtain it. Now, with Nicholas's word, Bai Xiaowen has essentially locked in the reward in advance.
Three Temporary Team-Building Item at level 6 are indeed worthy of the difficulty of S-Tier mission. What's more, by collecting 7 Broken Oath, you can piece together a [Oath of Black Edge], which is Permanent Team-Building Item.
Even though they are Permanent Team-Building Item, there are differences, which is reflected in the difficulty of obtaining them. The difficulty of obtaining [Oath of Black Edge] is quite high, which means that its additional effects are also extraordinary.
