Background / History

Sudo links his self-loathing and feelings of inadequacy to his parents’ troubled relationship and his own inability to control his anger. When he finally discusses these problems with Horikita Suzune, she rejects the idea that his past has already determined his future and urges him to take responsibility for his choices 236.

His athletic ability is both a source of pride and his main means of seeking recognition. He believes that being faster, stronger, and better at sports should allow him to lead Class D to victory. The Sports Festival exposes the limits of that belief, forcing him to confront his dependence on teammates and his fear of being regarded as a failure 234 235.

False Assault Accusation

Three Class C Basketball Club members—Ishizaki Daichi, Komiya Yago, and Kondo Rin—accuse Sudo of a one-sided assault behind the gymnasium. Sudo insists that they provoked him, attacked together, and forced him to defend himself 68 69 82.

Toudou uncovers conversations identifying the complaint as Ryūen’s trap. Sakura’s footage shows the trio surrounding Sudo, attacking after he pushes one of them, and then collapsing in apparent pain after a collision with a metal shelf 70 71 83.

Despite the footage, Class C’s teacher proposes suspending Sudo for two weeks while suspending the accusers for one. Horikita rejects the implication that Sudo is responsible for the incident, and the hearing is subsequently suspended for further verification 84 90.

Horikita and Ayanokouji later pressure the three accusers into withdrawing their complaint. Its withdrawal ends the case 101 102 103.

Locker-Room Scheme and Interclass Tension

Sudo leaves a beach volleyball game by pretending to suffer a leg cramp, then blocks access to the locker rooms while Ike retrieves a camera from the women’s ventilation duct. Ryūen’s group challenges him, and the arrival of Sakayanagi and Student Council President Horikita Manabu leaves him increasingly overwhelmed. A commotion involving Suzune draws the crowd away 109 110 111.

At a later restaurant visit, Totsuka Yahiko provokes him by insulting Class D. Katsuragi Kouhei prevents a confrontation by reminding Sudo that further violence could cost his class points and evaluation; Sudo leaves angrily 117.

Sports Festival Breakdown

Although Sudo takes training seriously, he initially dismisses Hirata’s emphasis on teamwork in favor of his own athletic ability 203 216.

Ryūen kicks his supporting leg and secretly stamps on him during the pole-falling competition. After the loss, Sudo lashes out at Class A’s defense, but immediately abandons the argument when Horikita is injured and runs for a first-aid kit 222 223.

Further provocations during horse fighting cause him to chase Ryūen, disrupt the Red Group’s formation, and expose his headband to capture. When classmates criticize his behavior afterward, he punches Hirata and leaves the festival, depriving Class D of a main relay runner 224 225 226.

Reconciliation and Return

Horikita follows Sudo to the dormitory and confronts both his effort and his failings. Their conversation moves beyond the morning’s losses to his insecurity, family background, and belief that he cannot change. Her own admission that she needs reliable partners persuades him to return 234 235 236 239.

Sudo bows deeply to Hirata and publicly accepts responsibility for his violence and its effect on Class D. He then opens the mixed relay with a commanding lead and successfully passes the baton to Hirata 240 242.
