Matsushita Chiaki looked away from her terminal screen. The midday sun outside the window was a little harsh, but it made the ends of her softly curled chestnut hair shimmer with a gentle golden-brown sheen, like fine silk flowing over her shoulders and back.
She unconsciously raised a hand to tuck a strand of hair that had fallen across her cheek behind her ear, revealing her softly contoured profile and deep blue eyes, which now glimmered with unease. Clear as blue sapphires, they still held a calm, intelligent light, even in her panic.
As a recognized "above-average" honor student in Class D, she had a crisp, capable air that was nonetheless elegant. Her well-fitted uniform outlined her balanced, slender figure without being showy. Now, however, the turmoil within her had left her unusually tense, like a drawn bowstring, radiating restrained strength.
The message had been sent. There was no turning back.
She took a deep breath. Her fingertips were cold.
Just then, her terminal vibrated softly, and the prompt tone rang out with unusual clarity in the classroom.
Her heart clenched. Almost holding her breath, she tapped open the new message. It was from the number she had just added.
A concise line appeared on the screen: "Ancient Texts Area, deepest part of the library. Now."
Just as I thought... Chiaki took a deep breath and clenched her slightly sweaty palm. As she stood, her chestnut hair swept in a soft curl around her waist.
Her steps were faintly hesitant. With every stride, the striking scene from class crashed into her mind: Hoshino Kanade's long-fingered hand, firmly supporting Kiyona's small, snowy-white, slightly curled bare foot. His fingertips had even... even seemed to knead the tender sole, so gently it was almost imperceptible? Kiyona had practically collapsed over the desk, her whole body limp. The way she had looked...
"Mm..." A barely audible, embarrassed whimper slipped from Matsushita Chiaki's throat. She stopped short, her cheeks instantly burning, and a faint blush spread over her fair neck like a newly blooming cherry blossom.
What was I thinking?! Why couldn't I get that image out of my head?! She shook her head hard, trying to banish the mortifying scene. But the more she resisted, the clearer the details became: the ridges of Hoshino Kanade's fingertips, the arch of Kiyona's foot tensing and relaxing... Then, for some inexplicable reason, she imagined what it would feel like if he held her own foot in his hand and kneaded it like that... The warm sensation, the absolute control... What would it feel like?
The thought shot through her like an electric current, making her legs inexplicably weak as her heart began to pound wildly in her chest.
She was so mortified she wanted the ground to swallow her. Her fingertips dug into her palm, using the pain to drive away these untimely, utterly absurd fantasies.
"Idiot! Is this really the time to think about that?" she berated herself inwardly. But the blush on her ears wouldn't fade; if anything, it threatened to spread down her neck.
Something like that... Even imagining it made her whole body tingle and her breathing grow difficult. But more frightening was the faint, deeply hidden... flutter in her heart, one she didn't dare examine too closely. This contradiction between shame and secret excitement lent her usual calm self-possession a breathtakingly fragile beauty.
After forcing down her chaotic thoughts, she rounded a row of towering bookshelves and saw Hoshino Kanade seated by the window, absently twirling a pencil.
The afternoon sunlight outlined his slightly languid yet sharply defined profile. His long, strong fingers manipulated the tiny pencil with ease, each joint distinct, his movements imbued with an indescribable rhythm and sense of control. Those hands! Matsushita Chiaki's heart clenched. The thoughts about "foot contact" and the shame she had only just managed to suppress surged back uncontrollably, and she could hardly bear to look at his fingers.
She could feel her cheeks, which had only just begun to cool, flare hot again, and her neck heat up along with them.
She unconsciously pressed her legs together, her slender back held straight and her chestnut hair falling quietly down her back. She tried to maintain her composure, but her trembling lashes and tightly pressed, soft lips betrayed the turmoil within her.
At the sound of footsteps, Hoshino Kanade looked up.
His gaze was calm, neither teasing nor carrying the cool, faintly mocking look he'd worn in class. It held only a sharp certainty, as though it pierced the honor student facade she'd carefully maintained and saw through her embarrassment, as well as those unmentionable, self-loathing fantasies roiling inside her.
When that piercing gaze fell on her, she felt like a work of art being carefully appraised for its unique value.
"Sit." Hoshino Kanade's voice was even. He gestured to the empty seat opposite him, as though he hadn't noticed her body stiffen or her cheeks suddenly turn crimson—the blush spreading over her fair skin like rosy clouds over white jade.
Matsushita Chiaki walked over almost as if her hands and feet were on the wrong sides, then sat stiffly, her back ramrod straight and her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her knuckles paling with the effort.
She tried to lower her eyes and focus on her clenched hands, afraid to meet his gaze. She feared those deep, unfathomable eyes could see straight into her mind and the forbidden images of "hands" and "feet" there.
Matsushita Chiaki could clearly hear her heart pounding like a drum in the quiet reading area. It was practically deafening.
The contrast between her feigned composure and her inner turmoil gave her a peculiar, striking air of tension.
Hoshino Kanade gently set the twirling pencil down on the table. It made a soft tap.
The sound seemed to strike Matsushita Chiaki's taut nerves, and her shoulders gave an almost imperceptible twitch.
"Matsushita Chiaki. You've been 'adjusting' your level ever since the first day of school, haven't you?" He got straight to the point, without the slightest preamble. His voice was low and steady, yet carried the force of someone who saw through everything. "You've been matching the pace of the teachers' questions, deliberately getting certain answers right or wrong, keeping your score consistently above average but near the middle of the class—a position low-profile enough to avoid drawing attention, but not so low that you'd be suspected of being eliminated. Even in Karuizawa's little group, you've been playing the part that suited you."
His words were like a precision scalpel, stripping away Matsushita Chiaki's carefully constructed disguise layer by layer.
Every sentence struck at the defenses she least wanted breached.
What alarmed her even more was that under his cool analysis, her shameful thoughts about "feet" seemed so childish and ridiculous, as if she were a fool lost in vulgar fantasies.
The crushing shame and panic at being seen through twisted together, nearly suffocating her.
She pressed her fingertips hard beneath the table, nails digging into her palm as she tried to hold on to her last shred of clarity.
The instant her deepest secret was exposed, shock and panic flashed through her eyes. But in their depths, a calculating, instinctive defensiveness quickly ignited.
"Why?" Her voice was painfully dry, with a barely perceptible tremor. But in the blue eyes she raised to him, her unease had been replaced by a stubborn curiosity.
