Background / History

The Eight Branches Technique was among Orochimaru's established forbidden techniques before the Genie's arrival. He considered it valuable enough to use as a potential bargaining chip rather than relying on ordinary ninjutsu. 2

Orochimaru later deployed it as a Tailed Beast simulation against the Uchiha Military Police Force. The exercise tested the clan's battlefield coordination and forced Fugaku Uchiha to use the Uchiha Flame Formation to contain its manifestation temporarily. 23 24 The creature ultimately broke free and defeated the police force. 25

During the Kumogakure conflict, Orochimaru invoked the technique against the Fourth Raikage. The resulting Yamata no Orochi fought at the center of the battlefield until Kumogakure withdrew, after which Orochimaru dispelled it. 32 35

By the time Kakashi began studying the Spirit Transformation Technique, Orochimaru had revised the Eight Branches Technique more than a dozen times. 203

Manifestation

The technique produces Yamata no Orochi, a gigantic serpent-like construct resembling eight intertwined giant snakes. It has eight heads, eight tails, a white scaleless body, and chakra output comparable to a Tailed Beast. 32

Limitations

Despite its size and durability, Yamata no Orochi is not Orochimaru's preferred answer to every opponent.

Uchiha Tailed Beast Simulation

Orochimaru used the Eight Branches Technique to give the Uchiha clan practical experience against Tailed Beast-level force. Shisui evacuated casualties while Fugaku directed the clan's response. 23

The Uchiha initially restrained Yamata no Orochi through Sharingan genjutsu and later enclosed it with the Uchiha Flame Formation. Both measures failed to hold it permanently, and Orochimaru defeated the police force after the manifestation escaped. 24 25

Kumogakure War

Facing the Fourth Raikage, Orochimaru invoked the technique immediately to compensate for the gap in direct attack power. 32 The Fourth Raikage and Killer B, in Eight-Tails form, cooperated to confront it. 32

Following Kumogakure's retreat, Orochimaru dispelled the Eight Branches Technique and proceeded with Konoha's planned operation. 35
