In the silent training ground, the white instructor stared blankly at the corpses scattered all around, lying every which way.
On the arena, Bai Jing's body shattered like an illusion. Yet half a meter away from him, a new Bai Jing slowly appeared.
Even with the Heaven and Earth Great Shift, Bai Jing was not reckless enough to test it with his actual body!
What if the bullets contained some other strange thing?
"What kind of power is this? It can actually control—"
Bang!
Bai Jing lowered his gun and said softly, "I don't know if there are any recording devices here, so I won't let you keep talking. Though I really wanted to see the look on a villain's face when he figured out my ability in shock."
Looking at these trainees on the ground, most of whom were quite young and some of whom even looked like teenagers, Bai Jing fell into thought.
Right, I'm one of the good guys, aren't I?
In life, caution came first. To prevent anyone from being wounded but not dead, or some freak whose heart was on the right side, or an absurdly lucky person who could survive a bullet lodged in their forehead, Bai Jing circled the training ground and scanned them one by one.
Then he went to the instructor.
He picked up the instructor's guns!
The guns on the instructor were the same model as the ones Bai Jing had picked up from the cannon fodder earlier that afternoon, except these were more finely made and prettier.
One black and one white. The white gun had the English word "Queen" engraved on it, while the black one bore the English word "King."
"So tacky. Seriously, too tacky!" Bai Jing shook his head. "They need more elegant names. One will be called White Queen, and the other Black Emperor!"
"So this is the only training ground here?" Bai Jing walked out and looked to both sides.
The corridor was fairly long, and there were quite a few rooms along it, but most of them were empty.
"Come to think of it, I should've found someone to ask about the situation. Too bad I killed them too quickly..." Bai Jing sighed and continued onward. A room farther ahead was still lit, so there had to be people there!
Bai Jing reached the door and pushed it open.
A master of the arts was bold, after all.
He saw a training ground identical to the one from before, except every person on it was a woman.
Unlike the male training ground, which had been entirely white people, this one had white people, Asians, Latinos, and black people alike.
Most wore simple training clothes. Some wore only bikinis, while others wore nothing at all.
"Farewell!" Bai Jing shut the door as if nothing had happened.
He followed the original route back to the workshop.
Looking at all the machine tools in the workshop, Bai Jing was honestly tempted.
But after thinking it over, he decided against it. The forces at his disposal were not yet capable of taking in this equipment.
There was no point destroying it, either. There were plenty of companies like this in America. Better to leave it for now and come claim it once he had enough power.
After leaving the workshop and Lin's Precision's front gate, Bai Jing reached the street and heard police sirens wailing toward him from far away.
Only three of them had their sirens on, but there were another twenty-seven vehicles traveling with them. It looked like a convoy.
The engines sounded different as well. There should have been police cars mixed with other vehicles.
"No way. The Brotherhood actually reports deaths to the police?" Bai Jing scratched his head and watched the police cars stop in front of Lin's Precision. They even began handling official business.
"What a joke!" Bai Jing muttered, then turned to look around for somewhere to eat.
He had done nothing all afternoon but sit in the car and get blown by the wind. He was starving.
By your side, though the road is long, I never grow weary.
Walking with you, one stretch after another.
Crossing one peak, only to find another beyond it.
The goal moves farther away, keeping dreams forever ahead.
Though the road is rugged, I do not fear hardship.
May I experience both pain and joy throughout my life.
Happiness and sorrow spin around at my side.
Watching snow in the wind, flowers in the mist, joy endlessly turning.
This time, Bai Jing was not the one singing. It was Teresa Teng's music playing in a restaurant by the roadside.
"Teresa Teng exists in this world too?" Bai Jing scratched his head and walked into a restaurant called Hujianren.
The moment the young waitress saw Bai Jing, her eyes lit up.
It was nothing else. Bai Jing's features were only barely on the same level as those readers who looked like Takeshi Kaneshiro, but his eyes were simply too captivating.
"Sir, how many? Is this your first time here?" she asked in English.
"Do you speak Mandarin?" Bai Jing asked.
"Oh, we're fellow countrymen!" The girl immediately switched to Mandarin. "I thought you looked like you were from China too, but some people here can't speak Mandarin anymore, so..."
"Mm-hmm!" Bai Jing was actually a little speechless. He was from the Central Plains, so how had he become fellow countrymen with someone from Hujian?
Of course, this was America. As long as they were both from China, they counted as fellow countrymen.
"Are you new here? I haven't seen you before!" the girl asked.
"I was in Manhattan before. I only came here today because of something that came up," Bai Jing answered honestly.
After all, he had run into a girl from China. It did give him a sense of familiarity.
"I see!" The girl's energy visibly drained away. "What a pity. I study at university here, so I rarely get the chance to go to Manhattan!"
"Here?" Bai Jing thought about it. What university was around here?
"The State University of New York. I'm in the philosophy department!" As she spoke, the girl led Bai Jing into a private room.
"You came to America to study philosophy?" Bai Jing was stunned. Was there anything in the world more philosophical than Marxist philosophy?
Hegel and Nietzsche were nothing more than side dishes compared to Marx!
To say nothing else, Marxist philosophy had created two superpowers, one after the other!
"Sigh, I'm just studying it casually." The girl shook her head. "If I study in America for two years, then teach for another two, I'll have a much better starting point when I go back home to develop my career!"
"Oh." Bai Jing nodded. In his previous life, he had been at the bottom rung of society. How could he understand such things? He had never even met a returned overseas student!
"You're studying abroad, yet you still work here?" Bai Jing asked.
"The restaurant belongs to a friend, so I'm just helping out!" the girl said. "Oh, I almost forgot—you came here to eat. I've held you up for so long. How about I treat you?"
"No, no!" Bai Jing quickly shook his head. "I'll order for myself."
He marked a couple of items on the menu, and the girl took it away.
Could she be a spy sent to get close to me too? Bai Jing thought as he watched her retreating figure.
It was not persecution paranoia. Her eyes were narrow and long, her forehead broad and smooth, and even her makeup was strange.
She did not look like a girl who had come from China. Instead, her makeup looked like something deliberately designed to cater to white beauty standards.
If she deliberately catered to white aesthetics even in matters of beauty, why would she pounce on an attractive asian guy the moment she saw one?
Do they think white girls won't work on me, so they switched to an asian girl? The key is that the asian beauties in your eyes look ugly as hell to me!
An official assassin training center, with a large number of assassins distributed around it—that couldn't be more normal. So even if she isn't one, I should still remain maximally vigilant. But that would be too exhausting.
Bai Jing had always been someone who feared trouble.
So when the girl came back, Bai Jing asked her directly.
"Were you sent to get close to me too?"
These two chapters were too short. Even combined, they would barely count as one chapter.
But I'm not working tomorrow.
So I'll write another chapter in a bit.
That'll make three updates tomorrow.
Mainly because it feels uncomfortable for the daily update chapter count to be an odd number.
