Across from the cold-storage room, a crack appeared in the door of a storeroom.
Four eyes peered out in terror. They belonged to Wu Hen and Yu Yu, who were hiding inside.
Wu Hen even covered Yu Yu's mouth with one hand, afraid his mute younger sister might scream.
What was going on???
Was this guy crazy or something?
Why had he set all the medical supplies on fire?
If the Black Shirt Organization had truly turned against humanity, why had this guy killed his own Black Shirt comrades, too?
And what was with the weapons made of White Mycelium growing out of his body?
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh~~~~~~"
The flames blazed inside the cold-storage room. To make the fire burn hotter, the Eye-Patterned Man had even tossed in liquid oxygen, ensuring that every medicine in the entire room would be burned to ashes!
Seeing that the fire had grown too intense to put out, the Eye-Patterned Man closed the door with satisfaction and prepared to leave.
When he turned around, Wu Hen caught a glimpse of his face through the crack in the door!
To Wu Hen's astonishment, the eye-pattern on his forehead had spread like frost-white blood vessels, covering the upper half of his face in an utterly grotesque fashion. He looked exactly as if he were wearing half a corpse-white mask.
The most horrifying thing was his eye sockets. They looked like nests occupied by some kind of insect. His eyeballs and lenses had long since been devoured, and the pupils—like white larvae—actually swam back and forth inside his eye sockets!
Trembling.
The delicate little body in his arms was trembling uncontrollably.
Wu Hen himself was chilled to the bone, so Yu Yu was even more terrified.
As Wu Hen struggled to figure out how to comfort his sister, Yu Yu's little hand nervously pushed his palm up, signaling that he should cover her eyes, not her mouth!
Wu Hen was mortified.
He'd been so dumbfounded that he'd forgotten: when a child was scared, all she had to do was look away!
"What exactly is that thing? An Awakened, or some kind of mutant?"
"His behavior is just like that of someone whose mind has been tainted. But shouldn't people be cleansed once they return to the Nuwa Divine Terminal?"
"How could something as filthy as that, something you'd only find in the desolate wasteland, have made it into our home?"
Wu Hen and Yu Yu didn't dare make a sound. They waited in silence.
The Eye-Patterned Man headed toward the emergency stairwell. As soon as he left, Wu Hen and Yu Yu would flee this hellish place!
It was far too dangerous outside. Not only were there crazy gangs and violent extremists, but there was even a cruel Insect-Eyed Half-Human...
"Click."
The sound of a door locking came from the far end of the stairwell.
Yu Yu couldn't help but exhale in relief. Her nerves had been stretched so taut that her eyes were now brimming with tears. She lifted her little peach-shaped face in a pitiful pout and looked at her brother, Wu Hen.
Normally, Wu Hen would have hugged her and comforted his little sister, but he couldn't do that now.
Because Wu Hen heard a very, very faint footstep. Like a venomous scorpion, it was creeping closer and closer to the storeroom where they were hiding!
"That guy locked the door behind him. He didn't leave... He knows we're here!" Wu Hen immediately told Yu Yu.
Like a startled kitten, Yu Yu twisted around, not knowing which way to run.
"What a lovely scent~" The Eye-Patterned Man sniffed the air, then walked toward the siblings. "I bet one of you is a sweet little girl."
Wu Hen's heart sank when he heard that.
Was this thing's sense of smell abnormally sharp?
In other words, it had caught their scent from the very beginning. Hiding had been pointless!
"Under different circumstances, I'd have treated you so sweetly. But now I think a girl like that would taste even better. No seasoning needed!" The Eye-Patterned Man followed their scent. Blood was still dripping from the white, icy spikes on his hand!
Hearing those utterly perverted words, anger flared in Wu Hen's eyes!
"Run toward the elevator shaft. I'll deal with it!" Wu Hen patted his sister, signaling for her to escape in the other direction.
Yu Yu nodded and immediately ran down the opposite end of the corridor, heading toward the elevator shaft.
"Tsk, tsk. So scared you're all sweaty?" The Eye-Patterned Man made a revolting sound.
He quickened his pace and chased down the corridor toward them.
As soon as he rounded the corner, a figure suddenly flashed out from a doorway. Wu Hen held a semiautomatic pistol and fired a rapid burst at the Eye-Patterned Man!!
"Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!!!!!"
Wu Hen emptied the magazine in one breath, firing all seven rounds!
He'd taken the semiautomatic pistol from his father's collection. He'd been carrying it at his waist the whole time.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Nice shooting. Every shot was aimed at my head. Too bad firearms like that can't hurt me..."
The Eye-Patterned Man wasn't killed. A mass of white mycelium had sprouted from his arm, forming something like a raised bulletproof shield that stopped every one of Wu Hen's bullets!
Wu Hen frowned.
This guy's ability was absurd. Could he automatically deflect bullets?
Xiao Yi could help Wu Hen lock onto a target, so usually all he had to do was fire.
But this opponent seemed to have a white fungal substance inside his body that automatically intercepted bullets. They couldn't pierce him at all!
With no other choice, Wu Hen could only retreat toward the elevator shaft for now.
The Eye-Patterned Man seemed to know Wu Hen was reloading, so he raced after him down the corridor.
The Eye-Patterned Man was incredibly fast. He moved as if someone had sped up a movie to double speed, which astonished Wu Hen.
"Bang!! Bang!!!"
At a corner, Wu Hen suddenly leaned out and fired, catching his opponent off guard.
At the same time, the Eye-Patterned Man's nose twitched. Immediately afterward, the two white insect pupils in his eye sockets began to writhe rapidly!
A mass of white mycelium appeared on his body again. Some of it formed over his abdomen, while the rest covered his chest... The two bullets that had come out of nowhere were aimed precisely at those two spots!
It seemed the Eye-Patterned Man couldn't move while the white mycelium was growing and retracting.
He stood still and looked down at the bullets it had deflected. His whole face twisted into an even more vicious expression!
"I'll shove your sister's heart into your mouth in a moment. If you spit it out, I'll kill you; if you swallow it, I'll spare your life!" the Eye-Patterned Man said cruelly.
The white mycelium grew into armor and retracted into his body at incredible speed.
The Eye-Patterned Man charged after him again, murderous as ever!
Wu Hen had only a limited number of bullets, so he could do nothing but run toward the elevator shaft while firing back over his shoulder to buy time.
"Brother, I can't open the elevator shaft by myself." Yu Yu gestured to Wu Hen as he ran toward her.
Wu Hen glanced at the elevator shaft.
At the Eye-Patterned Man's speed, even if he and Yu Yu made it inside, they probably wouldn't escape alive.
"Don't be afraid!" Wu Hen no longer thought about running. He quickly reloaded his magazine.
He aimed at the corner and waited for the other man to approach.
The Eye-Patterned Man's nose twitched several times again.
He smelled the sweat on the siblings. They were waiting to die by the elevator.
He also smelled the hot gun barrel and the strong scent of gunpowder.
The instant a shot was fired, the Eye-Patterned Man could detect its dangerous presence, and the Pupil Worms would block it in an instant.
So the Eye-Patterned Man didn't hesitate. Even knowing he would be facing the other man's gun, he strode forward.
The instant he stepped out, the Eye-Patterned Man caught the dangerous scent of gunpowder!
The Pupil Worms spun rapidly,
the fungal shell braced for impact!
"Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!!!!"
Another burst of seven bullets—all aimed at the Eye-Patterned Man's heart!
Several layers of white mycelium appeared over his chest. They protruded from his torso like a shell of flesh, blocking every bullet!
The Eye-Patterned Man stood rooted to the spot again. Though he had withstood every shot, the repeated impacts to one place still struck with enough force to make him grit his teeth in pain.
He'd make sure to eat this brat's sister alive right in front of him!
"You've made me—"
Before the Eye-Patterned Man could finish, a metal arrow, sharp beyond belief, shot out of nowhere from less than five meters away!
"Whoosh!"
The arrow slammed into the Eye-Patterned Man's left eye socket. The Compound Bow's power carried it through his skull, pinning him to the wall!
The veins on the Eye-Patterned Man's face bulged, as if they were about to burst through his skin.
Blood poured from his eye socket.
Though he struggled wildly, with his head pinned in place, all he could do was twist his body in agony...
A Compound Bow hovered strangely behind a folding screen. The metal arrow had come from it. The Eye-Patterned Man would never have imagined there was a modern Compound Bow in this world that could fire by itself, like a living creature!
It floated in place, waiting; drew its own bowstring; and took aim by itself!!
"Ahhh! I'll eat your blood and drink your flesh!!" the Eye-Patterned Man roared in agony.
He even reached out and yanked the arrow from his eye socket and the wall!
Wu Hen was stunned by the sight.
It had pierced through his eye socket and skull. How was he still alive??
The Compound Bow did have one drawback compared with the semiautomatic pistol: Xiao Yi couldn't nock an arrow by itself.
Wu Hen had set this ambush by nocking an arrow on the bowstring ahead of time, then having Xiao Yi crouch behind the folding screen.
His eye socket...
Soon, Wu Hen witnessed something horrifying. Two white larvae appeared in the other eye socket of the Insect-Eyed Half-Human!
The instant Xiao Yi shot at his left eye socket, the white Pupil Worm in that socket had immediately swum over to the right one!
He'd survived an arrow through his skull. Could it be because his true body was the white Pupil Worm????
"Whoosh!"
Just as Wu Hen wondered what to do next, an incredibly crisp sound passed by his ear!
After practicing archery for so long, he could tell just from the sound of an arrow leaving the bow whether it had hit the bull's-eye!
Sure enough, a fierce arrow shot past and flew straight toward the Insect-Eyed Half-Human. When Wu Hen looked back at the half-human's right eye socket, he saw an arrow embedded there, its tail still quivering!
Inside the socket, the two white larvae clinging to each other were pierced at the same time. The arrow even tore them right out of the Eye-Patterned Man's face...
The half-human, still trying to pull the arrow from his left eye socket, suddenly froze. White steam began pouring from his entire body!
His body seemed to be rotten from the start, with no bones inside. As great clouds of white steam billowed out, the Eye-Patterned Man became like a puddle of flesh steamed to mush, slowly slumping onto the ground...
It was clear that the Eye-Patterned Man was truly dead this time, especially when both Pupil Worms were pierced and torn out of his skull.
But when Wu Hen turned his head in astonishment, he saw a young girl as graceful as a soaring swan!
Her lovely figure was upright yet supple. She held out her slender arms, a beautiful Compound Bow poised before her chest...
Her focused profile had an elfin beauty, while her eyes held a confidence and determination beyond her years!
She had fired the final arrow!
But good heavens!
Could this really be the younger sister he'd teased for fifteen years, the one who would crawl into his bed whenever there was thunder?
