Background / History
Marriage and the Lion-Slaying Tournament
Zhou Zhiruo is the Emei Sect Leader and Song Qingshu’s wife. Their marriage was initially unconsummated, while her unresolved feelings for Zhang Wuji remained a major source of tension. After the Lion-Slaying Tournament, she delayed returning to Emei by citing Song Qingshu’s injuries, while waiting anxiously for Zhang Wuji to return. 3 6
At the tournament, she and Zhang Wuji broke through Shaolin’s Vajra Subduing Demon Formation. Zhou Zhiruo initially intended to kill Xie Xun afterward, but Zhang Wuji’s confession caused her to abandon that plan. 3
She later confessed that she was willing to leave Song Qingshu for Zhang Wuji and suggested eliminating both Song Qingshu and Zhao Min so that they could be together. Zhang Wuji refused to abandon Zhao Min. 7
Break with Song Qingshu
Song Qingshu drugged Zhou Zhiruo with Ten Fragrance Soft Muscle Powder, exposed her arrangement with Zhang Wuji, and assaulted her. She tried to reason with him while weakened, but afterward resolved to hunt him down and kill him. 10 11
After being misled to Medicine King Manor in Liaodong, Zhou Zhiruo learned that Song Qingshu was active in the Manchu Qing imperial palace and confronted him. She bitterly recalled once believing that Song Qingshu would never betray her, while maintaining that nothing improper had occurred between herself and Zhang Wuji. 124
When Song Qingshu, disguised as Kangxi, claimed that Song Qingshu had loved her and refused an arranged marriage because of their marriage, Zhou Zhiruo chose vengeance over escape. After her acupoints were unsealed, she exploited the opportunity to strike him and temporarily disable him. 299
Reconciliation and Political Involvement
Despite their past, Zhou Zhiruo later cooperated with Song Qingshu against his enemies. She joined Dongfang Muxue and another masked woman in fighting Kangxi after realizing she could not defeat him alone. 296
She became increasingly accepted as Song Qingshu’s lawful wife, while retaining an independent political outlook. She arranged a proposed marriage alliance between Song Qingshu and Zeng Rou to secure Wangwu Sect support, treating marriage as a means of acquiring troops and political leverage. 401
Zhao Min identified Zhou Zhiruo as the likely daughter of Zhou Ziwang, the former leader of the White Lotus Society. Zhou Zhiruo reacted with clear hostility, as the society was taboo under the Southern Song government. 421
White Lotus Society and Hero Island
Zhou Zhiruo joined the White Lotus Society and became one of its Saintesses. Because she had less standing than Fu Minyi, she was assigned a dangerous infiltration mission on Hero Island, disguised as a gentrywoman returning home to visit relatives. 1144
After being abducted onto Hero Island, she discovered that the island’s Reward Good Envoys were far more numerous and formidable than expected. She concealed her identity until Song Qingshu unexpectedly arrived, allowing them to work together to evade discovery. 1144 1145
Song Qingshu later instructed her not to return to the White Lotus Society, instead entrusting her with Li Kexiu’s former territory in Jianghuai. Zhou Zhiruo accepted and suggested keeping Zhao Min at her side as an adviser—both for Zhao Min’s administrative ability and to keep a close watch on her. 1212
Defense of Yangzhou
Zhou Zhiruo established considerable prestige in Yangzhou through disciplined administration. When Xia Quan’s army threatened the city, she rejected a purely defensive strategy and argued for striking his newly assembled, poorly integrated forces before they could solidify their position. 1972
She coordinated an ambush with Yang Miaozhen that trapped Xia Quan’s army in a valley. Yang Miaozhen killed Xia Quan, while Zhou Zhiruo’s forces successfully defended Yangzhou and absorbed the surrendered Red Tunic troops. 1979 1980
Appearance
Zhou Zhiruo is repeatedly described as an exceptionally beautiful woman with an elegant, refined, and ethereal presence. Her beauty is likened to an orchid, while her colder demeanor gives her an otherworldly quality. 3 1972
- Bright, clear eyes and an appearance compared to a fairy descending from the moon palace. 124
- Fair, jade-like hands, particularly striking when employing claw techniques. 359
- Often carries a cold, aloof, or spectral aura despite her graceful bearing. 2458
- Was seen wearing a green dress during her pursuit of Song Qingshu. 124
- Her battlefield presence combines frosty beauty with an authority that commands respect from officers and soldiers. 1972
Personality
Zhou Zhiruo is reserved, proud, and highly conscious of status. She often maintains a cold exterior, especially when dealing with rivals or threats, but is capable of tenderness toward Song Qingshu and concern for people under her protection. 5 428 1148
She is ambitious and pragmatic. Her decision to remain involved with the White Lotus Society was driven by a desire to gain standing, while her later handling of Yangzhou demonstrates that she is willing to take political and military responsibility rather than remain only a sect leader. 1145 1972
Her possessiveness toward Song Qingshu frequently emerges as jealousy, particularly in confrontations with Zhao Min, Huang Rong, Zhu Meichuo, and other women around him. Nevertheless, she can put personal resentment aside when strategy or Song Qingshu’s safety requires cooperation. 440 442 1185 1985
Abilities & Skills
Emei Sect Martial Arts
As Emei’s leader and her generation’s most outstanding disciple, Zhou Zhiruo has access to the sect’s martial arts treasury and applies its techniques with exceptional precision. 428 1984
- Combines Emei internal methods with the Nine Yin Manual. 1984
- Can seal opponents’ acupoints quickly enough to subdue unguarded experts. 474
- Her lightness skill improved enough to keep pace with Song Qingshu while he carried another person. 1161
- Her early rapid advancement left her foundation unstable; later training focused on rebuilding it properly. 448 1984
Nine Yin White Bone Claw
Zhou Zhiruo’s signature killing technique is a sinister claw art drawn from the Nine Yin Manual. 359
- Severely wounded Yun Zhonghe’s shoulder in a single exchange. 359
- Allowed her to threaten Duan Yanqing after disarming and knocking him down. 359
- Can be directed at vital acupoints and used for lethal strikes. 300 1984
- Its effectiveness is greatest when paired with deception, close-quarters positioning, or an opponent’s lowered guard. 1984
White Python Whip Technique
Zhou Zhiruo’s primary weapon art employs a long, barbed soft whip with eerie, flowing movements. 296 1185
- Her whip is nearly fifteen feet long and fitted with sharp barbs and hooks. 1185
- Can entangle weapons, as demonstrated when she seized Duan Yanqing’s iron crutch and pulled him off balance. 359
- Her movements with the whip are described as unpredictable and weightless, resembling windblown willow catkins and drifting duckweed. 1984
- The technique is less suited to cramped quarters, where she prefers to switch to a sword. 1185
Swordsmanship and the Heavenly Sword
Zhou Zhiruo is an adaptable swordswoman whose swordplay became markedly stronger after consolidating her Nine Yin cultivation. 1185
- Used swordsmanship to reverse the momentum against the Xuanming Elders in a confined tea house. 1185
- Sustained a fierce offensive style against two expert opponents, though it consumed internal energy rapidly. 1185
- Used a feigned loss of her whip to draw the Yellow-robed Woman into range before revealing the Heavenly Sword. 1984
- The Heavenly Sword’s sharp intent forced the Yellow-robed Woman to retreat and concede the duel. 1984
Leadership and Strategy
Zhou Zhiruo is an effective administrator and strategist despite initially lacking experience in political affairs. 1212 1456
- Governed Yangzhou well enough to restore prosperity after war. 1456
- Commanded roughly 50,000 soldiers after removing ghost soldiers and adding recruits. 1457
