Background / History
The Muscle Tendon Change is Shaolin Temple’s supreme secret manual, regarded as more profound than its Seventy-two Ultimate Skills. Master Fangzheng’s deep cultivation of it brought his internal energy to a state of perfection, allowing him to withstand Jiumozhi’s assault and force a draw 85.
Its original Sanskrit manuscript disappeared from Shaolin before resurfacing in You Tanzhi’s possession. Fangzheng identified the booklet as the lost original; Shaolin monks ordinarily cultivate from a Chinese translation because few among them can read the Sanskrit text 620.
Song Qingshu prevented Shaolin from immediately reclaiming the manuscript by exploiting the crowd’s inability to verify the Sanskrit title. He later retained the original text, though he could not unlock its contents without a trustworthy Sanskrit translator 621 622 1234.
Cultivation Method
The original manuscript is written in Sanskrit, creating a major barrier to cultivation outside Shaolin. Song Qingshu notes that Sanskrit readers are exceptionally rare, while seeking Shaolin’s help would reveal that he possesses the stolen manual 1234.
The manual itself is not suited to mass teaching through text alone. Its genuine cultivation requires comprehension of the Sanskrit original, whereas the Chinese version is used by Shaolin practitioners 620.
Abilities & Characteristics
Profound Internal Energy
The Muscle Tendon Change produces exceptionally deep internal energy and can rapidly elevate a capable practitioner into the ranks of elite martial artists.
- Fangzheng’s mastery allowed him to defend against Jiumozhi’s techniques without defeat 85.
- Chen Youliang’s cultivation remedied his lack of a high-level internal-energy art and dramatically increased his strength 1308.
- Song Qingshu recognized Linghu Chong’s internal energy as the Muscle Tendon Change during their contest 1234.
- Bei Haishi survived Song Qingshu’s attack for three breaths due to his cultivation of the art 1667.
Resistance to Cold Poison
Muscle Tendon True Qi can preserve a practitioner afflicted by severe yin-cold poison.
- You Tanzhi survived the poison of a thousand-year-old Ice Silkworm after cultivating the technique by chance 620.
- His internal energy merged with the poison, transforming into an extremely yin, cold, and overbearing variant of True Qi 620.
- This altered qi was not representative of Shaolin’s normal Muscle Tendon Change 620.
Combat Enhancement
The art substantially strengthens a practitioner’s martial foundation but does not automatically grant perfected combat skill.
- Chen Youliang became a top expert after learning it, yet remained inexperienced with the divine skill; several of his movements were still incomplete 1308.
- Song Qingshu could identify Chen Youliang’s rapid improvement as a result of the Muscle Tendon Change after only a brief exchange 1308.
- Chen Youliang’s newly acquired strength was still insufficient against Song Qingshu, who expected to subdue him within ten moves 1308.
Hidden Diagrams and the Sutra of Divine Feet
The diagrams discovered by You Tanzhi within the wet Sanskrit manuscript are not part of the Muscle Tendon Change. They are a separate Indian yoga art, the Sutra of Divine Feet, concealed with herb-based ink that appears when exposed to water and vanishes when dry 1234.
- The Sutra of Divine Feet originates from Magadha and was created to resolve external demons during cultivation 1234.
- Its postures and qi-circulation routes differ from the genuine Muscle Tendon Change 1234.
- You Tanzhi’s ability to cultivate from the diagrams led observers to mistakenly believe that the Muscle Tendon Change could be learned without literacy or martial foundations 632 1234.
- The diagrams are comparatively accessible but do not grant the true essence of the Muscle Tendon Change; easy initial progress comes at the cost of limited lifelong advancement 632.

Trivia
- Song Qingshu initially considered using the manual’s diagrams to give ordinary soldiers a quick means of cultivating True Qi, before learning that those diagrams belonged to the Sutra of Divine Feet rather than the Muscle Tendon Change 632 1234.
- Song Qingshu judged the Muscle Tendon Change to offer him little direct benefit at his own level, but reconsidered studying it after witnessing Bei Haishi’s resilience 632 1668.
