Background / History
Mutants are exceptionally rare individuals or monsters whose abilities and growth differ from ordinary Players and Awakeners. Early accounts describe human Mutants as people whose attributes exceeded the ordinary human limit of 10 before receiving enhancement; they begin the Doomsday Game at Player Level 1 rather than Level 0. Their abnormal attribute is usually Willpower, granting unusually high innate Mental Strength. 12
Human Mutants may have existed before the Doomsday Game, with Taoists, spirit mediums, and people with extrasensory abilities proposed as possible examples. After the Player Template loads, purple patterns appear on their bodies; these patterns are distinct from tattoos and can transfer Mental Strength through contact. 12 13
Because their Mental Strength is innate rather than System-bound, human Mutants can support Awakeners for extended combat. This made them highly sought after by factions, which often protected them as strategic resources while also depriving them of freedom. 12
Monster Mutants commonly develop traits related to their former host's condition, obsessions, or profession. Their advancement is usually tied to devouring humans or absorbing polluted Spiritual Energy, though rare cases—such as Xuan Ziyi becoming a Third Order Red-Clad Mutant very early—do not fit the usual pattern. 250
Appearance
Human Mutants can appear physically ordinary until their post-Game patterns are identified. Monster Mutants have no standard form and may display extreme anatomical changes.
- Human Mutant patterns — purple, mysterious markings that may flash blood-red and create an unsettling sensation when observed. 13
- TANK-type Mutants — massive, defensive Second Order creatures used in assaults on fortified positions. 420
- Strikers — high-speed Mutants with drill-like heads, capable of rotating impact attacks and potentially burrowing underground. 389 944
- Lickers — agile Mutants that move on all fours and attack with enlarged claws. 255
- Flame-Spitting Insects — large insectoid Mutants whose flames can overwhelm artillery and Awakener defenses. 955
- Red-Clad Mutants — rare humanoid forms with powerful mental abilities; Xiao Xuan could float by using psychokinesis to move her paralyzed body. 250 675
Abilities & Skills
Innate Mental Strength
Human Mutants possess unusually high Willpower and Mental Strength from the beginning of the Doomsday Game.
- Their leaking Mental Strength can be sensed as faint psionic fluctuations. 12
- Their Mental Strength can replenish or support an Awakener’s skill use during battle. 12
- The patterns on a Mutant’s body can transfer Mental Strength through physical contact. 13
- Their usefulness in sustained combat made them valuable enough for factions to compete over them. 12
Mental Strength Sharing
Wen Ya demonstrates the Mutant Talent Mental Strength Sharing, which links her Mental Strength with another Player’s.
- Can link with one Player at her current stage. 52
- Shares the Mental Strength of both connected parties. 52
- Becomes stronger as the Mutant’s Awakener Tier rises. 52
- Allows Mental Strength-dependent Talents and skills to be used for longer periods. 52
Specialized Mental Abilities
Some Mutants possess dangerous mental abilities far beyond simple Mental Strength support.
- Mental Shock — can damage, stun, or suppress targets through willpower-based attacks. 34
- Illusion — a Second Order Mutant used an Illusion Shard to drag Lin An into an illusion despite his exceptional Willpower. 632
- Mental Virus — Xiao Xuan infected Lin An with Zombie-like thoughts through Mental Shock and a Mental Virus attack. 676
- Perception evasion — Piao Zhengyan avoided Lin An’s mental detection despite being a Peak Second Order Mutant. 629
Physical Mutation and Regeneration
Monster Mutants can possess extreme physical strength, speed, resilience, and regenerative ability.
- Their forms may develop multiple limbs, specialized organs, insectoid structures, or massive size. 255 955
- Third Order Mutants can be powerful enough to devastate Safe Zones and conventional military forces. 16 955
- Piao Zhengyan repeatedly resurrected after being killed, requiring Lin An to grind his remains into ashes with mental power to delay regeneration. 629
- Some high-level Mutants can adapt to repeated Rule-based attacks and develop resistance after enduring them. 1432
