Even Steve Rogers, who had grown up under James's wing since he was a teenager, had never heard him speak so openly about his feelings.
Steve thought it over without saying a word. Beside him, Bucky nodded easily, the corners of his mouth lifting as he spoke in a clear voice.
"Teacher, I don't think I can be the alpha."
"Tell me why." James encouraged him, intrigued.
No longer one-armed, Bucky's bearing had changed dramatically. After a moment's thought, he spoke frankly.
"Opper and Colin grew up together. They're deeply attached to each other. On the sheer cliff, Mr. Remus Pitt made it clear that only one person could survive the climb to the summit, but not once did anyone try to sabotage another."
"Colin Pitt is very strong. It took all three of us working together to give me a chance. Even with my arm restored, I still couldn't beat him one-on-one. Colin is the one suited to become the alpha."
James nodded lightly, then glanced at Steve and smiled.
"You're quick-witted. Good. You're not suited to lead the Wolf Pack."
He regarded Bucky with some admiration. Steve's good friend took many things in stride and wasn't stubborn.
"Your actions on the cliff opened their eyes, and earned you some recognition. But you still can't command everyone's respect as the alpha. For now, continue with the rest of your training. Before long, you'll carry out the first round of the Winter of the Wolf plan."
James looked at Steve, who was fidgeting nearby and clearly wanted to say something. He teased, "So, how are things going with the girl?"
Captain Rogers, the brave and invincible hero of World War II, rubbed his nose and glared at Bucky, who was stifling a laugh. He raised his eyes and spoke sheepishly.
