Background / History

Winterfell and the royal visit

Ned upheld his promise to the dying Galbart Glover by approving Garon Glover's betrothal to Sansa. He planned for King Robert Baratheon and the Old Gods to witness the engagement, though the marriage itself was delayed because Sansa was still young 1 2.

Catelyn Stark opposed the match and hoped to secure Sansa a southern marriage instead. Ned refused to break his word, maintaining that Sansa and Garon had mutual affection and that his promise must stand 2 15.

When Robert arrived at Winterfell, Ned received his old friend warmly. In the Stark crypts, Robert pressed him to become Hand of the King; Ned accepted out of loyalty despite his reservations 17 20.
