The Gladstone Type VI car stopped twenty meters from the western city wall; any further forward was a restricted military zone.
"David, this section of the wall isn't even as high as the southern one. If you're interested in walls, you should go to the southern one!" Myron said to David as he hopped out of the car.
"I just wanted to enjoy the scenery outside the city and see the walls that protect us for myself!" David naturally wouldn't tell the truth, so he replied with a smile.
"Suit yourself, but I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. The scenery outside the city isn't very pretty. Once we go to Na'an City, the outskirts there are a paradise!" Myron said with a hint of longing.
David smiled. He had sent Myron a message yesterday asking to visit this section of the wall.
He had originally thought this would take several days, but to his surprise, Myron had sent a message that morning saying he had already made the connections and they could ascend the wall.
Although David's father, Hans, held the position of Deputy Director at the Department of Justice, it was a nominal role. Furthermore, if David used Hans's connections for what he was doing, it would likely bring trouble to his father.
Myron was different; his father, Mayor Bernard, was the chief administrator of Peilan City and could handle any minor trouble.
Most importantly, David could ensure that even if someone were suspicious, there would be no evidence to prove anything.
"Please present your identification!" a young sergeant who had been standing at the entrance of the restricted zone saluted the two of them and said.
"David, open the identification on your Identity Bracelet. The security requirements here are very strict!" Myron said to David while operating his own Identity Bracelet, which projected an ID card bearing the emblem of the Interstellar Federation.
David activated his own identification as well. The sergeant scanned it with the device on his wrist before relaxing slightly.
"Mr. Myron, Mr. David, I am Sergeant Emery. I have received orders from Lieutenant Eaton to accompany you during your tour of the city defenses. Please abide by the regulations of the military zone!" Sergeant Emery said, forcing an awkward smile.
The smile on his stiff face looked extremely unnatural to David. It was clear that Sergeant Emery had spent a long time in the military and was accustomed to being serious; he was quite uncomfortable hosting two well-connected youths.
"Sergeant Emery, thank you very much. We understand the rules. We are just here to look around; we won't touch anything, let alone ask questions!" Myron replied with a smile.
"Please follow me!" Sergeant Emery led the way, with the two of them following behind.
"Lieutenant Eaton is the highest-ranking commander of the Peilan City defenses and the captain of the city guard. I had my father contact him for this," Myron whispered to David as they walked.
David couldn't help but look at the twenty-meter-high wall drawing closer. It was a military fortress built entirely of steel, a massive project that completely enclosed Peilan City, yet its highest commander was only a lieutenant.
However, David quickly shifted his line of thinking. Such a military structure might have been an unimaginable feat of engineering in his previous life, but this was the interstellar era; perhaps such city defenses were trivial military facilities for this world.
They arrived at the base of the steel wall, where Sergeant Emery swiped his Identity Bracelet to open the gate, revealing a massive elevator.
The military elevator looked extremely rugged, with raw steel exposed without any decoration, yet there wasn't a speck of rust to be seen.
The elevator rose smoothly and rapidly; it took barely a second or so to reach the top.
"Gentlemen, do not pass in front of any weapons or equipment, and do not converse with the soldiers, as they might be quite unfriendly!" Sergeant Emery swiped his bracelet again before turning back to speak to them.
With that, the elevator doors opened, and after stepping out, they arrived atop the wall.
The wall was ten meters wide, and aside from a long-range sniper cannon placed at intervals, there were no other weapons.
"Be careful not to step on the red zones!" Sergeant Emery blocked Myron, who was about to take a step forward, and warned him.
Only then did David notice that the surface of the wall was covered in various colors: green lines, and yellow and red blocks. Sergeant Emery led David and Myron along the green lines.
David was very curious about what lay beneath the red blocks, so his Shadow Servant flew out and merged into the red steel floor.
He then saw through the vision of the Shadow Servant a massive heavy laser cannon. Unlike the pictures he had seen, he only realized how gargantuan this heavy war weapon was when he saw the real thing.
The Shadow Servant took one look and flew back, returning to hover above David's head.
"Sergeant Emery, bringing kids out to play?" A mocking voice came from the side; it was a soldier wearing the same sergeant's uniform.
However, his uniform not only bore the rank of sergeant but also a small telescope badge.
"Sergeant Harold, this is a task assigned by the captain. We have official visitation documents from the city government!" Sergeant Emery reminded him in a deep voice.
"Little brats who haven't even grown their hair out yet, try not to wet yourselves from the sound of the cannons later!" Sergeant Harold muttered, though he didn't bother provoking the two youths who clearly had powerful backgrounds.
A flash of anger crossed Myron's eyes, but although his father was the mayor, he had no authority over the military system, and he truly had no way to deal with Sergeant Harold.
David had been an ordinary person in his previous life, so he didn't care about this kind of provocation. He was more interested in the telescope badge on Sergeant Harold's chest; that was the badge for a military sniper.
This Sergeant Harold was a sniper, and being able to appear here, it went without saying that he was one of the personnel operating the long-range sniper cannons.
Watching Sergeant Harold hum a little tune as he walked toward the direction of the restroom signs, it was clear he was going to relieve himself.
David's gaze turned toward the path Sergeant Harold had come from, where a downward passage stood with its door left open.
"These technical personnel are used to being lax; don't let them make a fool of you!" Sergeant Emery explained, not wanting the two to misunderstand that all soldiers were like this.
Due to the special status of Sniper Armored Warriors among armored warriors, the profession of sniping appeared particularly prestigious.
Every sniper dreamed of becoming a Sniper Armored Warrior, but in reality, the vast majority of snipers could never become one, because being a Sniper Armored Warrior required not only sniping talent but also the talent for being an armored warrior.
Even if one possessed both, it still required a calm mindset and a powerful will. Abbott, the Sniper Armored Warrior of the Sirius Mercenary Group, was a fallen Sniper Armored Warrior; that was the consequence of an insufficiently firm will.
Regardless, sniper personnel in the military always felt a sense of superiority.
Coupled with the fact that they guarded important key positions, some sniper personnel developed the delusion that they were very important.
Orthodox soldiers like Sergeant Emery were not used to Sergeant Harold's style, but they had no authority to manage him.
During their conversation, they reached the edge of the wall, where they could see the scenery outside the city.
This was the first time David had seen the true wilderness. Previously, from illusions and video footage, those had been far from as realistic as this.
Indeed, the scenery here was very poor, or perhaps it could be said that most of the land surface of Panshi Planet lacked any good scenery at all.
Looking out, the landscape was desolate; the ground was covered mostly by rocks and exposed gray soil.
There wasn't a single plant to be seen, nor was there any sign of a water source.
Only now, living in the city, did David truly understand what it meant for Panshi Planet to be described as an administrative planet with a low quality of life; having unified energy and water supplies within the city had prevented him from experiencing the true hardships of Panshi Planet.
"David, every time I see this scene, I want to leave this place!" Myron said softly from the side.
"Then let's work hard together and get into Na'an University together!" David nodded and said.
He thought of the charming scenery in the video footage, the green ecological environment outside Na'an City; only there would he have the chance to obtain higher clearance, step out of this closed-off world, and see the vast universe.
