Bang! A gunshot rang out in the distance. Then Myron's smug voice came through the 988 Comms Channel. "I hit a Larva. When you have time, you can go deal with it two hundred meters to your right."
"Two hundred meters?" Jim glanced in that direction, then looked at Daili. Their eyes met, both of them puzzled.
"Sergeant Boris, activate the vehicle scanner and scan for life signs nearby!" Jim said over the 988 Comms Channel.
"Yes, sir!" Sergeant Boris replied.
The scanner's distinctive sound came through the comms.
"Stay alert!" Jim gestured as he spoke.
David didn't know what was going on, so he looked at Daili questioningly.
"This area's within the city's defensive perimeter, and the Crow clean it out every day. Usually, it's hard to spot even one Larva without searching for one. But we've found two this time. Something's not right," Daili explained, keeping watch as he spoke.
"Report: No other life signs detected besides yours!" Sergeant Boris replied.
"Stay extra cautious from now on. If anything seems wrong, get back inside the vehicle immediately!" Jim said gravely. The report hadn't put him at ease.
"The Zerg Larva may be able to move underground. They're slow, but their life signs can't be detected by the scanner!" Daili explained to David again.
They left the Larva's corpse alone. They weren't Crow, and a Larva's shell was worth very little—not enough to make it worth their while.
Jim still led the group as they moved slowly to the right.
David realized Jim was an excellent leader: careful and levelheaded, always putting their safety first.
