The Gray Fog contains an immense, ancient palace whose scale resembles a giant’s dwelling. A mottled long table stands within the hall, while boundless gray-white mist spreads beneath it like an ocean. Klein ordinarily appears at the table’s head as The Fool. 24 58

Properties

Spiritual Suppression and Rejection

When Cyril was first drawn into the palace, the Gray Fog violently rejected him, suppressing his soul and leaving him too weak to lift his hand. The reaction ceased after several seconds, allowing him to remain within the palace. 58

• Cyril instinctively resisted Klein’s initial pull for a brief moment before deliberately allowing his spirit to be drawn upward. 58
• The Gray Fog’s concealment does not fully prevent exceptional observers from perceiving what surrounds Cyril; Cattleya’s Eye of Secret Seer partially pierced the barrier and caused her eyes to bleed. 380
• Cyril can perceive the Gray Fog surrounding Klein in reality and identifies it as highly conspicuous to certain supernatural senses. 153 159

Concealment and Isolation

The realm obstructs ordinary fate-related perception and provides unusual protection from external influence. Bernadette detected a change in Cattleya’s fate after her entry into the Gray Fog, while Cyril noted that fate abilities were obstructed there. 380

• A ritual-linked individual may retain a fixed, faint presence of Gray Fog around them after receiving The Fool’s approval. 64
• Its protection can stabilize or neutralize dangers attached to high-level knowledge; Cyril suspected that a change following Klein’s Sequence 6 advancement had resolved the contamination associated with the Red Priest Card’s Sequence 0 information. 305
• The realm does not completely shield Klein from a Uniqueness: the Die of Probability can affect his luck despite the Gray Fog’s isolation. 414
• During Cyril’s Mirror World incident, a spreading red influence limited Klein’s sight from above the Gray Fog to roughly one kilometer around Cyril. 252

Ritual Transfer

The Gray Fog can receive sacrifices and return items through the Gate of Sacrifice and Bestowal. Klein uses this connection to transfer weapons, Beyonder Characteristics, and other objects between the palace and the physical world. 173 234

• Cyril can invoke The Fool’s honorific name and use a manifested sacrifice ritual to send objects into the Gray Fog. 234 362
• The space has practical limits: Klein was unable to receive Kalvetua’s enormous corpse without exhausting himself and ending the ritual. 362

Crimson Stars and Summoning

Deep crimson stars within the fog represent people connected to The Fool. Klein can touch these stars with spirituality to observe, contact, or draw the associated person into the palace. 24 58

• Klein first focused on Cyril’s crimson star after repeatedly feeling urged to establish contact with him. 24
• Cyril’s arrival above the Gray Fog revealed his accidental use of Chinese, initiating Klein’s suspicion that they shared an origin. 58 59
• Klein invited Cyril to the regular Tarot Club gathering, held every Monday at two o’clock in the afternoon, Backlund time. 59

History

Klein first took an interest in Cyril after noticing the crimson star representing him and receiving a favorable divination regarding contact. Before approaching Cyril himself, Klein commissioned Audrey to locate and investigate him without alerting him. 24

Cyril was eventually pulled into the palace while consulting Arrodes. The Gray Fog initially repelled and weakened him, but its violent reaction abruptly stabilized. Klein immediately questioned Cyril about the unfamiliar language he had spoken. 58

During their first extended conversation, Cyril confirmed limited knowledge of Roselle, attributed his information about The Fool to a revelation from an unknown existence, and accepted Klein’s invitation to join the Tarot Club. He selected Wheel of Fortune as his Tarot codename after Klein left that card for him. 59

As the Tarot Club developed, the Gray Fog became its regular meeting place and the primary medium for exchanges, remote observation, prayer, and the storage of dangerous items. Its role expanded further after Klein’s Sequence 6 advancement, when it appeared better able to contain the danger of high-level knowledge. 103 305
