Background

Li En awakened in the body of Cyril Gray, a Backlund University history student and mysticism enthusiast, after transmigrating into a world he had previously regarded as fiction. His arrival immediately attracted the attention of a hostile High-Dimensional Overseer, whose connection threatened to consume him. Adam suppressed the connection and explained that Cyril’s soul possessed an essence comparable to, or exceeding, that of the Old Ones. 1

Adam advised Cyril to grow stronger before the world’s protective barrier failed, while warning that a conflict with the other High-Dimensional Overseer could only be delayed. Cyril’s first divination suggested that the Door Pathway suited him, though Adam later admitted he had manipulated the Tarot draw and believed the Wheel of Fortune Pathway was Cyril’s natural fit. 2 364

Cyril encountered Owen, an apparent Abraham Family descendant, and persuaded him not to consume an Apprentice potion during the Full Moon. The two revived the World Truth Society as a mutual-aid organization, then exchanged formulas: Cyril provided Seer Pathway knowledge in return for Apprentice materials and formulas. Cyril used the ingredients to become an Apprentice himself. 7 8 9

After his advancement, Adam recruited Cyril into the Twilight Hermit Order and placed him at Adam’s right hand during his first gathering, despite Cyril being only Sequence 9. Cyril is observant, calculating, and highly pragmatic. He often treats formulas, information, favors, and supernatural materials as resources to be exchanged, using bluffs and selective truths to guide others toward outcomes that benefit both them and himself. His handling of Owen’s Pathway change and potion ingredients established this tendency early. 7 8

Despite his opportunism, Cyril is not recklessly self-sacrificing. He accepted Klein’s bodyguard commission only on the condition that he could retreat from threats beyond his ability, and he rejected the Machinery Hivemind’s benefits because formal membership would restrict his freedom. 64 89
