Ch. 41Sudden Attack

Summary of “Sudden Attack”

Plot Points and Events

Cyril is summoned to Professor Fells’s office at Backlund University after skipping class. Fells unexpectedly presents him with a picture frame depicting a twisted, leafless forest beneath a dark-blue, eye-like moon. When Cyril looks at the image, he is pulled—body and mind—into the Painting World.
Inside, Cyril discovers that his Apprentice’s Door Opening ability cannot create an escape route. He theorizes that being physically transported into the painting has restricted the power connected to his soul, unlike his previous experience when only his mind entered.
Professor Fells then appears, but Cyril quickly realizes the figure is an impostor. The figure transforms into Zoila Hernandez, leader of the Blood Axe Gang and a Sequence 8 Listener driven mad by voices from the stars. She is armed with a revolver and a dangerous mystical blade. Cyril recognizes her as one of Adam’s assigned targets, for which he has already received his reward.
Zoila immediately attacks. Cyril uses Black Curtain and Escape Trick to evade her gunfire and attempt a surprise attack, but Zoila sees through the maneuver and nearly shoots him at close range. Cyril disrupts her aim, then tries to freeze her eyes with a frost-based attack. She unnaturally twists her body to avoid it and counters with her blade, which releases poisonous, sulfurous smoke.
Cyril uses Transfer Gas to redirect the smoke back at Zoila, injuring and disorienting her. However, the smoke also obstructs his vision, allowing Zoila to fire again. Cyril is hit in the shoulder and side, though neither wound is immediately fatal. Unable to use the painted trees as cover, he realizes he is trapped in a hostile environment. He calls out to Adam for help, but receives no response, suggesting the Painting World is disconnected from the Mind World.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates caution, improvisation, and knowledge of his own abilities. He quickly analyzes why his escape power has failed and adapts creatively during combat.
  • His confidence is challenged by the Painting World’s rules and Zoila’s ability to counter deceptive techniques. He is forced to take risks rather than rely on his usual tricks.
  • Cyril also becomes more resentful toward Adam, suspecting that Adam may have deliberately pushed him into confronting Zoila.
  • Zoila Hernandez is revealed as the true antagonist of the encounter. Her madness, supernatural physical flexibility, combat experience, and powerful weapons make her a serious threat.
  • Professor Fells is shown to be merely a disguise or vessel used to lure Cyril into the painting.

Significant Themes

  • Entrapment and loss of control: Cyril is pulled into a world whose rules he does not understand and cannot escape from easily.
  • The limits of deception: His Trickmaster abilities are less effective against Zoila, who can see through his movements and may possess insight into the world’s underlying truth.
  • Preparation versus circumstance: Cyril enters the university expecting an ordinary day and is caught without weapons, emphasizing how quickly his plans can be overturned.
  • Manipulation and hidden agendas: The encounter may be connected to Adam’s designs, raising doubts about whether Cyril is being guided or deliberately used.
  • Reality and illusion: The false Professor Fells, the painted environment, and Zoila’s possible ability to perceive the world’s “truth” blur the line between appearance and reality.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Professor Fells: Fells begins as a seemingly concerned professor but abruptly becomes the agent who transports Cyril into the Painting World.
  • Cyril and Zoila: Their interaction is immediately hostile. Zoila relies on direct violence and powerful weapons, while Cyril counters with evasion, misdirection, and improvised Beyonder abilities.
  • Cyril and Adam: Though Adam does not appear, Cyril’s thoughts repeatedly return to him. Cyril suspects Adam arranged or accelerated the confrontation, but Adam fails to answer when called, leaving Cyril isolated.

Ch. 42Prayer and Observation

Chapter Summary: “Prayer and Observation”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • House visits Saint Hillan Cathedral and prays before the Triangular Sacred Emblem, intending to descend into the cathedral’s underground depths.
  • He plans to offer a powerful Sealed Artifact to the Great Existence as proof of his devotion. His desire to meet the entity has become increasingly obsessive and torturous.
  • House has gained permission to advance to the Brawler Scholar pathway. His earlier encounter with the Great Existence allowed him to completely digest the Mystery Pryer potion and, together with his accumulated merits, qualify for advancement.
  • A cathedral official warns House that advancing is especially dangerous given his age, but House proceeds, trusting that God will protect him.
  • Before he can receive the potion, the room becomes unnaturally cold and dark. A message appears on the surface of a cup of tea, apparently delivered by a mysterious entity acting on behalf of the Great Existence.
  • The message rebukes House for planning to attack the Church of Steam’s headquarters in Backlund, calling him foolish and warning him not to damage the Great Existence’s “perfect identity.”
  • House is given the Great Existence’s honorific name: “The Sublime from the Unknown; The Gateway Above Dimensions; The Incarnation of Art and Fantasy.”
  • Convinced that the information is genuine, House abandons his plan and prays for forgiveness.
    Meanwhile:
  • Cyril, trapped in the World in the Painting while being pursued by Zoila, hears House’s prayers.
  • The prayers begin forcibly separating Cyril’s spirit from his body. When Cyril angrily orders the chanting to stop, the World in the Painting falls silent.
  • Cyril realizes that he has gained greater control over the painting world than its original owner. He creates an earthen wall to block Zoila, understanding that she can no longer threaten him unless she can destroy the world itself.
  • After allowing his spirit to separate, Cyril perceives reality as abstract dots, lines, planes, and sheets of “paper,” with time and space becoming tangible structures.
  • He sees the High-Dimensional Overseer and understands that its observation directly influences the fate and development of whatever it watches.
  • Cyril attempts to move the World in the Painting out of the Overseer’s sight, but realizes the entity’s shadow follows him.
  • He therefore calls upon Adam for assistance, offering information about the Old Ones in the cosmos—and specifically information related to Adam’s authority and symbols—in exchange for help.

Character Developments

  • House: His intense devotion initially drives him toward a reckless plan to obtain a Sealed Artifact and possibly attack the Church of Steam’s headquarters. After receiving the warning, he demonstrates humility and obedience, abandoning the plan and sincerely repenting. His faith remains firm, but his judgment is shown to be naïve and impulsive.
  • Cyril: He advances from merely surviving within the World in the Painting to gaining partial mastery over it. His spiritual separation grants him a higher-dimensional perspective and allows him to understand the relationship between observation, fate, and reality. He becomes more strategic, choosing to seek Adam’s help rather than confronting the High-Dimensional Overseer directly.
  • Adam: Though he does not yet appear directly, he is established as a powerful potential ally whose cooperation can be purchased with important cosmic information.

Significant Themes

  • Faith versus fanaticism: House’s devotion gives him strength and advancement, but it also leads him toward foolish and dangerous actions. True faith ultimately requires accepting correction rather than blindly pursuing one’s own interpretation.
  • Higher-dimensional observation and destiny: The High-Dimensional Overseer’s gaze does not merely witness events; it alters their possible outcomes. Escaping its observation becomes essential to breaking free from a predetermined fate.
  • Identity and divine power: The Great Existence’s “perfect identity” must be protected, suggesting that divine beings rely on carefully maintained roles, identities, or manifestations.
  • Spiritual transcendence and danger: Cyril’s separation from his body grants him a broader understanding of reality, but it also leaves his physical body vulnerable and exposes him to greater cosmic threats.
  • Knowledge as currency: Cyril offers information about the Old Ones and their authorities as payment, emphasizing that forbidden knowledge can function as a source of power and negotiation.

Character Interactions

  • The cathedral official questions House’s decision to advance, warning him about the danger of the Brawler Scholar potion. House responds with unwavering faith.
  • The mysterious entity communicates with House through the tea, insulting his recklessness while delivering the Great Existence’s oracle and honorific name.
  • House reacts by repenting and praying directly to the Great Existence.
  • Cyril hears House’s prayer, and the connection unintentionally affects his spiritual state, drawing his spirit out of his body.
  • Cyril confronts Zoila indirectly by erecting a wall and taking control of the World in the Painting.
  • Finally, Cyril appeals to Adam, beginning a negotiation for assistance against the High-Dimensional Overseer.

Ch. 43Angel Experience Card

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril receives an imagined Sequence 2 Planeswalker Beyonder Characteristic from Adam. Adam warns him that the power will last only briefly and urges him not to let Bethel—or the entity on the moon—locate him.
  • Cyril uses the temporary Planeswalker abilities to:
    • Teleport through the Spirit World.
    • Transform into symbolic signs and interact with dimensional forces.
    • Create an Angel-level Black Curtain to block the High-Dimensional Overseer’s observation.
  • He enters a Painting World, where he discovers that the Zoila pursuing him is only a prepared painting rather than the real person. He burns the painted Zoila, retrieves her genuine rust-red longsword and revolver, and escapes.
  • Cyril destroys the entire Painting World and absorbs the remaining phosphorescent remnants into himself before leaving the dimension.
  • Beneath Saint Hillan Cathedral, Cyril responds to the prayers of House, a fanatical infiltrator within the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery. He forgives House’s reckless actions but warns him not to repeat them.
  • Cyril grants House knowledge of the Acting Method, causing House to see a divine vision and praise Cyril as a supreme, dimensional deity.
  • At Backlund University, Cyril discovers that Old Fells is dead. Zoila had killed him and used his flesh as pigment for the disguise that made him appear alive.
  • Feeling responsible because Old Fells was targeted for knowing him, Cyril vows to avenge him. He releases a thunderous attack to alert others to the scene, then abandons the temporary Planeswalker power.
  • The strain of using Angel-level power leaves Cyril weak. He merges back with his body and collapses just before Archbishop Horamick Haydn arrives to investigate.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates greater mastery of dimensional and Planeswalker abilities, using them creatively despite only temporarily possessing them. His actions also significantly digest his Trickmaster potion.
  • He becomes more protective and emotionally affected by the deaths of those connected to him, particularly Old Fells, whom he promises to avenge.
  • Cyril continues moving toward becoming an Astrologer, believing that this advancement will allow him to uncover and punish the hidden enemies manipulating events.

  • Observation and concealment: Cyril is constantly threatened by powerful beings capable of perceiving him, making concealment and dimensional barriers essential for survival.
  • Reality versus illusion: The Painting World, the false Zoila, and Old Fells’s flesh-based disguise blur the boundary between genuine identity and manufactured appearances.
  • Faith and manipulation: House’s devotion shows how supernatural beings can influence believers, while the Church setting emphasizes the conflict between rival hidden powers and Orthodox institutions.
  • Responsibility and revenge: Cyril feels accountable for Old Fells’s death and resolves to retaliate against the enemies operating from the shadows.
  • Acting and advancement: Cyril’s use of Planeswalker abilities may help digest his potion, while the Acting Method becomes a crucial tool for House’s future development.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Adam: Adam provides the imagined Planeswalker characteristic and cautions Cyril about Bethel and the entity on the moon. Cyril remains wary of Adam’s possible involvement in the attack.
  • Cyril and Zoila: Cyril defeats the painted version of Zoila inside the Painting World, destroys the world itself, and takes her weapons.
  • Cyril and House: Cyril responds to House’s prayer, forgives his failed scheme, warns him, and grants him the Acting Method. House responds with overwhelming religious fervor.
  • Cyril and Old Fells: Though Old Fells is already dead, Cyril mourns him, apologizes, and swears revenge for his murder.
  • Cyril and Horamick Haydn: They do not directly interact yet, but Horamick arrives immediately after Cyril’s warning display, setting up a likely investigation or confrontation.

Ch. 45Sacrifice the Self for the Greater Good

Chapter Summary: “Sacrifice the Self for the Greater Good”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril recounts his encounter with Zoila Hernandez, who attacked him while disguised as Professor Fells. Carlson questions him about the attacker and asks for a description.
  • Despite an injured right shoulder, Cyril draws Zoila’s portrait with his left hand. His recently acquired artistic abilities allow him to produce an accurate likeness, though he warns that her talent for disguise may make it unreliable.
  • Carlson leaves to report Cyril’s testimony and assures him that undercover protection has been arranged.
  • Beth and Little Thomas visit Cyril in the hospital, attempting to keep his spirits up. Owen later arrives with food, and Beth insists on feeding Cyril because of his injuries.
  • Cyril learns that the entire History Department at Backlund University has been given the day off because of the incident. He jokes that his injuries might excuse him from exams, while Owen complains that this would be unfair.
  • Cyril asks Owen to visit Father Utravsky at Harvest Cathedral for specialized healing medicine. Beth suspects he may be considering conversion to the Mother Earth Church, but Cyril denies this and explains that he trusts the priest’s medical abilities.
  • Cyril falls asleep and experiences a dreamlike meeting with Adam in an ancient church surrounded by bones.
  • He reveals that the entity connected to the Painting World is the “Lord of Dimensions, the Eye Overlooking the Mortal World, the Source of All Fantasy, the Creator of the Painting World.”
  • Cyril explains that the entity’s power involves observation: seeing something can alter its future development and ultimate outcome. He also realizes that the information he received may have been part of a script arranged by the Author.
  • Adam warns Cyril that the entity saw him as well, and that learning more about it will allow it to understand Cyril more deeply. He advises Cyril not to meet its gaze again, even through the Primordial’s protective barrier.

Character Developments

  • Cyril: Demonstrates resourcefulness, humor, and composure despite severe injuries. His new artistic powers and knowledge have become practical tools. He also shows increasing awareness of how powerful and dangerous the Painting World’s creator is, though he remains willing to investigate further.
  • Carlson: Acts professionally and protectively, collecting evidence from Cyril while arranging security for him.
  • Beth: Reveals a caring but stern side, trying to comfort Cyril and ensure he follows medical instructions. Her suspicion about his connection to the Mother Earth Church shows that she remains observant and cautious.
  • Owen: Maintains a teasing, familiar relationship with Cyril. Their banter provides comic relief and shows their mutual comfort despite the crisis.
  • Adam: Appears calm and enigmatic. Rather than directly confirming Cyril’s theories, he offers a warning that emphasizes the danger of pursuing knowledge about the entity.

Significant Themes

  • Sacrifice for the greater good: Cyril’s injuries have disrupted the university and affected those around him, while his actions have contributed to uncovering a major supernatural threat.
  • Knowledge and danger: Learning more about powerful entities is valuable but risky, since observation works both ways and may expose the observer.
  • Observation and reality: The Painting World’s creator can influence reality merely by observing it, suggesting that perception itself can determine outcomes.
  • Humor amid trauma: Hospital banter and teasing help the characters cope with fear, pain, and uncertainty.
  • Manipulation and predestination: Cyril suspects that the Author engineered events to extract information efficiently, raising questions about free will and whether his actions are part of a larger script.

  • He meets Father Utravsky, who is unusually large and intimidating.
  • Owen learns that the church has an 'Apothecary' who can create extraordinary potions, but they need persuasion to help.
  • They encounter a locked stone door in the basement, behind which a Vampire is imprisoned.
  • The Vampire, who is the 'Apothecary', refuses to help concoct a potion for Cyril unless he is released.
  • Owen tries to persuade the Vampire but fails, and Father Utravsky agrees to create a standard healing potion instead.

Character Developments

  • Owen: Shows concern for his friend Cyril, trying to help him despite the difficulties.

Ch. 47Purpose (Happy Children's Day!)

Chapter Summary: “Purpose (Happy Children’s Day!)”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Harven takes over watching Cyril in the hospital while Beth cares for Little Thomas. He remains unusually quiet, apparently contemplating Cyril’s condition and the dangers surrounding Beyonders.
  • Owen returns from Harvest Cathedral with a healing potion prepared by the mysterious Apothecary imprisoned in its basement. In exchange, Cyril must find a way to persuade Father Utravsky to release the Apothecary quickly. Owen has already sworn to fulfill this promise beneath Mother Earth’s holy emblem.
  • Owen leaves to study for his upcoming graduation exams, jokingly suggesting that divination would be more useful than studying.
  • Harven reveals that he considered asking Mr. Portland to obtain a healing potion for Cyril after Beth warned that Cyril’s injuries could cause permanent complications. He urges Cyril to abandon the potion if its conditions are too dangerous.
  • Cyril reflects on the dangers of the Beyonder world, particularly the Law of Beyonder Characteristics Convergence and how it draws uninvolved people into supernatural conflicts. He feels guilty over old Fells’s death, believing Fells became a victim because of his connection to Cyril.
  • An unknown, elderly Beyonder enters Cyril’s Mind World and uses “Soothing” to calm his negative emotions. The stranger warns that self-doubt is one of the greatest dangers for a Beyonder before disappearing. Cyril suspects the encounter was deliberately timed and wonders whether Adam was involved.
  • Harven explains that he has hesitated to become a Beyonder because of the dangers described by Mr. Portland. However, when Cyril tells him that the God of Steam and Machinery’s pathway could greatly enhance his mechanical abilities, Harven immediately becomes enthusiastic and rushes off to find Portland.
  • Cyril drinks half of the potion and pours the rest over his wounds. The potion rapidly regenerates his flesh, confirming its extraordinary effectiveness. He suspects Emlyn prepared it mainly to ensure Cyril fulfills his promise to rescue the Apothecary.
  • Cyril sleeps and wakes the next morning to Owen’s arrival. He confirms that he will be discharged from the hospital despite having suffered serious injuries the previous day.
  • Cyril explains that the Machinery Hivemind likely already knows about his connection to Harvest Cathedral, but because it is an orthodox church, the association makes him appear less like a dangerous rogue Beyonder. His actions were partly intended to create a legitimate public explanation for his recovery and supernatural connections.
  • Owen realizes that Cyril deliberately sent him to Harvest Cathedral as a visible “performance” designed to reassure—or mislead—the people secretly monitoring him.

Character Developments

  • Cyril becomes more aware of the unavoidable danger surrounding Beyonders and the extent to which his own existence endangers people connected to him. His guilt over old Fells deepens, but the mysterious Spectator’s soothing helps him regain emotional balance.
  • Harven demonstrates genuine concern for Cyril’s injuries and briefly considers entering the Beyonder world to help him. His supposed composure collapses when he learns that the God of Steam and Machinery’s pathway could improve his technical talent, revealing his strong passion for machinery.
  • Owen remains impulsive and humorous, but he also acts loyally by obtaining the healing potion and accepting responsibility for the Apothecary’s release. His reliance on divination for exams reinforces his unserious, opportunistic personality.
  • Cyril and Owen’s relationship shows mutual trust: Owen follows Cyril’s instructions without initially understanding the larger strategy, while Cyril relies on Owen to act as a public link between him and Harvest Cathedral.
  • The mysterious elderly Beyonder appears as a calm, benevolent but potentially ominous figure. His ability to enter Cyril’s Mind World suggests considerable power and raises questions about his true motives.

Significant Themes

  • The danger of Beyonder involvement: Supernatural conflicts cannot be contained to the people who initiate them; friends, acquaintances, and bystanders may become victims.
  • Guilt and responsibility: Cyril struggles with the belief that his connections and actions indirectly caused old Fells’s death.
  • Self-doubt versus emotional control: The unknown Spectator emphasizes that losing faith in oneself can be especially dangerous for a Beyonder. Cyril’s emotional turmoil is treated as a genuine threat to his stability.
  • Public identity and strategic deception: Cyril carefully constructs an acceptable explanation for his actions, using his connection to an orthodox church to reduce suspicion from the Machinery Hivemind.
  • The tension between ordinary life and mysticism: Harven’s interest in technology contrasts with Cyril’s involvement in the occult, yet the two worlds overlap when Harven learns that becoming a Beyonder might enhance his mechanical talents.
  • Promises and hidden obligations: The healing potion comes with a debt, forcing Cyril to eventually confront Harvest Cathedral and secure the Apothecary’s freedom.

Important Character Interactions

  • Harven and Cyril: Harven worries about Cyril’s permanent injuries and offers an alternative source for the potion. Their conversation also exposes Harven’s reluctance toward mysticism and sudden enthusiasm for a mechanically oriented pathway.
  • Owen and Cyril: Owen delivers the potion, reports the Apothecary’s demand, and later realizes that his visit to Harvest Cathedral was part of Cyril’s protective strategy.
  • Cyril and the mysterious Spectator: The Spectator silently enters Cyril’s Mind World, calms him, and warns him against self-doubt before vanishing.
  • Cyril and Emlyn/Father Utravsky: Though Emlyn does not appear directly, his potion enables Cyril’s rapid recovery. Father Utravsky and the imprisoned Apothecary remain central to Cyril’s unresolved obligation.
  • Cyril and the Machinery Hivemind: Their unseen surveillance creates the chapter’s political tension. Cyril attempts to shape their interpretation of him so that he is treated as a potentially recruitable Beyonder rather than a dangerous enemy.

Ch. 48Revelation of Fate

Chapter Summary: “Revelation of Fate”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Haven arrives at the hospital and confirms that Cyril’s gunshot wound has completely healed without a trace. Cyril agrees to leave, and Haven covers for him by claiming he is being transferred to a private hospital.
  • The Machinery Hivemind members never appear, implying that they accept Cyril’s identity or are tacitly allowing his actions.
  • Cyril returns home before noon but must pretend to remain bedridden because Beth is worried about his health and angry that he was removed from the hospital.
  • Beth questions Haven downstairs, fearing Cyril’s injuries may worsen and offering to help pay for his treatment. She later visits Cyril, expresses genuine concern, and urges him to rest.
  • Beth suggests that Cyril visit the Harvest Cathedral to thank Priest Utravsky and even says she would support him if he chose to convert to the Mother Earth Church, since its priest saved him. Cyril refuses, privately noting that he does not truly believe in any deity.
  • Haven secretly tells Cyril that he has advanced to the Savant Sequence. His abilities include improved memory, comprehension, learning, and practical skills.
  • Haven also reveals that Portland Mormont believes Cyril may be recruited by the Machinery Hivemind if he does not join the Mother Earth Church. Haven himself has been invited to work at the Royal Academy of Sciences and plans to establish his own laboratory while cooperating with the God of Steam and Machinery Church.
  • Later, Owen arrives in excitement, claiming to have received a “revelation from Fate” concerning a treasure containing the main ingredient for the Clown potion.
  • Owen admits that he used the Fate Crystal Ball to obtain the vision. The treasure is reportedly aboard a pirate ship anchored near the estuary east of Backlund.
  • Owen asks Cyril to join him in robbing the ship, explaining that he cannot even board it without Cyril’s help. The ship may also contain materials needed for an Astrologer.
  • A second divination confirms that the ship and its contents are highly dangerous, although surrounding circumstances may provide opportunities to reduce the threat.

Character Developments

  • Cyril: Demonstrates greater confidence in concealing his supernatural condition and manipulating his public identity. He remains skeptical of faith, divination, and apparent “destiny,” viewing Owen’s revelation as potentially part of a larger trap or predetermined script.
  • Haven: Successfully becomes a Savant and begins moving toward a scientific career. He maintains respect for his church while also pursuing independence through research and plans for a personal laboratory.
  • Beth: Reveals strong anxiety and affection for Cyril. Although normally composed and well presented, she rushes to the house without properly applying her makeup, showing how deeply his injury frightened her. She is also open-minded about his religious choices.
  • Owen: Shows growing initiative and ambition in pursuing the Clown potion, but his reliance on divination remains questionable. His discovery draws Cyril into another potentially dangerous supernatural situation.

Significant Themes

  • Faith versus personal conviction: Beth’s acceptance of religious belief contrasts with Cyril’s refusal to devote himself to any god, despite benefiting from the healing power of the Harvest Cathedral.
  • Fate and manipulation: Owen’s “revelation” raises the possibility that destiny is guiding events—or that someone is deliberately arranging them. Cyril’s suspicion that the opportunity may be a trap emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding prophetic visions.
  • Science and religion: Haven’s future combines church affiliation with scientific advancement, reflecting the chapter’s balance between supernatural powers and technological progress.
  • Secrecy and identity: Cyril continues hiding the true nature of his abilities and recovery, while the Machinery Hivemind’s silent acceptance creates uncertainty about what they know.
  • Risk and opportunity: The pirate ship offers valuable potion ingredients but also represents a major threat, forcing the characters to weigh advancement against survival.

Character Interactions

  • Beth and Haven: Beth reprimands Haven for removing Cyril from the hospital, while Haven quietly supports the deception.
  • Beth and Cyril: Beth cares for Cyril in a gentle, protective manner, reassures him about his faith, and promises to help him recover.
  • Cyril and Haven: They exchange confidential information about Haven’s advancement, Cyril’s possible recruitment, and Haven’s professional future.
  • Cyril and Owen: Owen seeks Cyril’s help with the pirate-ship expedition. Cyril challenges the reliability of Owen’s vision and insists on assessing the danger before agreeing.
  • Owen and Fate: Owen’s divination produces an opportunity tied to both the Clown and Astrologer pathways, but the unstable result suggests hidden danger and uncertain consequences.

Ch. 51Quit While Ahead (Please Vote with Your Monthly Tickets!!)

Chapter Summary: “Quit While Ahead”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril and Owen infiltrate a pirate ship docked near Backlund through the Mirror World. The ship belongs to Vice Admiral Hurricane Qilangos’s crew and is apparently waiting for him to return after an assassination.
  • They identify a dangerous pirate guarding the captain’s cabin, but avoid confronting him directly. Owen prepares a dream divination to locate valuable potion ingredients stored on the ship.
  • Cyril creates a distraction in the lower cabins by producing what appears to be a massive explosion. The pirates rush to investigate, leaving the captain’s cabin temporarily unguarded.
  • Using Mirror World abilities, Cyril and Owen enter the room behind the captain’s cabin and quickly steal several metal boxes containing the ingredients.
  • Cyril attempts to take Qilangos’s safe as well, but the approaching pirates force them to abandon it. They escape through a mirror just as the room is attacked and gunfire shatters the window.
  • The brown-jacketed pirate, likely a powerful Sequence 6 “Baron of Corruption,” realizes the ship is no longer safe. Suspecting that Qilangos has already encountered trouble, he orders the crew to leave the dock immediately.
  • Back in Cyril’s room, Owen complains about leaving the safe behind. Cyril recognizes that the pirate’s mental influence has corrupted Owen, intensifying his greed. Cyril advises him to visit a church or meditate to clear the corruption.
  • Haven unexpectedly enters and confronts Cyril about sneaking out at night, questioning whether Cyril’s earlier gunshot wound was truly accidental.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates caution, tactical intelligence, and disciplined judgment. Although tempted by the safe and the ship’s valuables, he prioritizes escape over greed and prevents Owen from making a fatal mistake.
  • Owen proves useful through divination but remains inexperienced and vulnerable. He is affected by the enemy’s corruption ability without realizing it, revealing the psychological dangers of the Beyonder world.
  • The brown-jacketed pirate is established as a highly dangerous Beyonder capable of influencing others’ minds. His quick deduction and command over the crew suggest authority and experience.
  • Haven becomes more suspicious of Cyril’s activities and begins openly challenging his secrecy, creating potential conflict over Cyril’s hidden supernatural life.

Significant Themes

  • “Quit while you’re ahead” is the chapter’s central lesson: survival and secured gains matter more than chasing additional treasure.
  • Greed and mental corruption: The pirate’s ability amplifies desire, showing that supernatural threats can undermine judgment without direct physical combat.
  • Caution versus recklessness: Cyril’s restraint contrasts with Owen’s lingering fixation on the safe.
  • The hidden dangers of the Beyonder world: Even a seemingly successful heist exposes the protagonists to powerful abilities, mental manipulation, and possible retaliation.
  • Secrecy and mistrust: Cyril’s covert actions increasingly attract Haven’s suspicion, threatening to expose his double life.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Owen cooperate closely during the infiltration, with Cyril directing the operation and Owen handling divination.
  • Cyril protects Owen by forcibly removing him from the ship when the danger escalates, then explains the mental corruption affecting him.
  • The pirates coordinate under the brown-jacketed man’s orders, though some initially resist abandoning Qilangos.
  • Haven’s confrontation with Cyril ends the chapter on a tense note, suggesting that Cyril will need to explain his movements or further conceal the truth.

Ch. 52Advice

Chapter Summary: “Advice”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril, still recovering from serious injuries, wakes late and reads that Vice Admiral Hurricane Qilangos was shot dead in Backlund. The brief newspaper report suggests the Church of the Lord of Storms has suppressed details.
  • Owen visits Cyril and helps sort through the spoils from their previous adventure. Cyril gives Owen the Lava Octopus blood crystal and allows him to choose other Beyonder materials, which Owen selects for preparing a Clown potion.
  • The Beyonder characteristic taken from Qilangos cannot yet be sold because of the public uproar. Owen tells Cyril to keep it, since it was effectively given to him by the mysterious powerhouse who killed Qilangos.
  • Owen reveals that entering the Mirror World greatly accelerated the digestion of his Seer potion. He expects to finish digesting it later in the month.
  • Owen feels an increasing spiritual urge to fulfill his promise to Father Utravsky. Cyril explains that the promise became a binding oath because it was made before the Holy Emblem of Life, with Mother Earth—through her Blessed—serving as witness.
  • That night, Cyril travels to Harvest Cathedral to fulfill his promise in exchange for the healing potion he received. Harven warns him to be careful, particularly because Owen is not accompanying him and Cyril cannot safely rely on the Mirror World.
  • At the cathedral, Cyril proposes that Father Utravsky release the Vampire/Sanguine imprisoned in the basement and allow him to participate in the cathedral’s daily life. Cyril argues that this could provide the Sanguine with a genuine opportunity to experience and accept the Mother Goddess’s teachings.

Character Developments

  • Cyril: Despite his injuries, Cyril remains practical, observant, and confident. He manages the division of Beyonder materials, understands the supernatural nature of Owen’s oath, and uses persuasion rather than force to fulfill his promise.
  • Owen: Owen’s potion digestion has advanced significantly after the Mirror World expedition. He becomes increasingly aware of the seriousness of his promise and shows genuine awe upon learning that a deity may have witnessed it. His choice of materials demonstrates his preparation to advance to the Clown pathway.
  • Father Utravsky: He remains committed to the principles of voluntary faith. Although he is willing to consider Cyril’s suggestion, he rejects forced conversion and emphasizes that true belief must come through personal acceptance.
  • Harven: He acts as a cautious guardian, allowing Cyril to leave while reminding him to avoid unnecessary risks.
  • The imprisoned Sanguine: Though absent from the main interaction, he becomes the focus of Cyril’s advice and is characterized as eccentric but not inherently evil.

Significant Themes

  • Oaths and divine judgment: Promises made in a sacred context can become supernatural bindings, even without a formal contract. Spiritual pressure and possible punishment enforce the oath.
  • Voluntary faith versus coercion: Cyril’s proposal depends on giving the Sanguine a chance to understand the Mother Goddess’s teachings freely, while Utravsky insists that forced conversion would contradict those teachings.
  • Pragmatism and persuasion: Cyril seeks a practical solution that benefits both the cathedral’s missionary efforts and the imprisoned Sanguine, rather than confronting Utravsky directly.
  • The dangers of supernatural power: The aftermath of Qilangos’s death, the risks of the Mirror World, and the handling of Beyonder characteristics all reflect the dangers and political consequences of extraordinary abilities.
  • Recovery and responsibility: Although injured, Cyril continues managing resources, honoring obligations, and navigating relationships with powerful supernatural figures.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Owen exchange teasing remarks before discussing their spoils and potion progression, reflecting their familiar partnership.
  • Cyril explains the spiritual consequences of Owen’s promise, deepening Owen’s understanding of his connection to divine forces.
  • Cyril reports his plans to Harven, who responds with concern rather than opposition.
  • Cyril respectfully waits for Father Utravsky to finish praying, then proposes a compassionate and strategic method for dealing with the imprisoned Sanguine.
  • Father Utravsky challenges Cyril’s assumptions about conversion, emphasizing that genuine faith must be freely chosen.

Ch. 53I Will Curse You Before the Moon!

Chapter Summary: “I Will Curse You Before the Moon!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril suggests that Father Utravsky put his religious teachings into practice by allowing the imprisoned vampire to leave the church basement.
  • Father Utravsky agrees, and Cyril accompanies him to release the vampire.
  • When the stone door opens, the vampire attempts to escape but is immediately subdued by a greatsword formed from pure dawn.
  • Cyril technically fulfills his promise by getting the vampire out of the basement, but he manipulates the situation so that the vampire must remain in the church until he appears to repent and accept the Mother Goddess’s teachings.
  • The vampire initially refuses, insisting that his faith belongs to the moon. Cyril persuades him to pretend to accept the Earth Mother Goddess’s teachings, arguing that this is the only way he will eventually be able to leave.
  • The vampire agrees, but Father Utravsky uses the Mental Terror Candle to implant a psychological suggestion in his mind.
  • As Cyril prepares to leave, the vampire is compelled to clean the church. He realizes he can no longer control his own body and angrily accuses Cyril of betraying him.
  • The vampire reveals his name—Emlyn White—and gives Cyril his family address in hopes that Cyril will warn other Sanguine. Cyril teasingly refuses and leaves.
  • Emlyn remains trapped in the church, forced to clean while cursing Cyril and swearing revenge in the name of the moon.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates his cleverness, opportunism, and willingness to exploit loopholes. He keeps his promise in the narrowest possible sense while ensuring that Emlyn remains under Father Utravsky’s control. His calm, sarcastic attitude contrasts sharply with Emlyn’s outrage.
  • Father Utravsky appears sincere and gentle, but he is also capable of using supernatural psychological manipulation. He views Emlyn’s captivity as an opportunity to expose him to the Mother Goddess’s teachings.
  • Emlyn White is introduced as a proud, irritable Sanguine with strong loyalty to the moon. Despite his arrogance and insults, he is vulnerable and easily manipulated when offered the possibility of freedom. His forced obedience creates both humiliation and comic frustration.

Significant Themes

  • Literal promises and manipulation: Cyril exploits the exact wording of his promise, showing how technically honoring an agreement can still involve deception.
  • Free will versus control: Emlyn’s body and behavior are overridden by the Mental Terror Candle, raising questions about whether genuine repentance or belief is possible under magical compulsion.
  • Religious conversion and psychological influence: Father Utravsky’s attempt to make Emlyn experience the Mother Goddess’s teachings is presented through both sincere evangelism and supernatural suggestion.
  • Humor amid supernatural danger: The scene combines ominous powers—dawn purification, the Mind World, and mental manipulation—with slapstick elements, particularly Emlyn’s involuntary cleaning and furious curses.
  • Clashing loyalties: Emlyn’s devotion to the moon conflicts with Father Utravsky’s faith in the Earth Mother Goddess, while Cyril remains detached and primarily motivated by convenience and amusement.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Father Utravsky engage in a playful but manipulative exchange, with Cyril’s suggestion being turned against him when Utravsky offers to personally preach to him.
  • Cyril and Emlyn immediately develop an antagonistic relationship. Cyril repeatedly provokes and outmaneuvers him, while Emlyn responds with insults and threats.
  • Father Utravsky acts as both captor and potential teacher to Emlyn. His gentle manner contrasts with the powerful magical control he exerts.
  • Cyril persuades Emlyn to feign religious acceptance, but Father Utravsky’s candle ensures that the supposed conversion has a real psychological effect.
  • Emlyn attempts to recruit Cyril into helping the Sanguine, but Cyril refuses and abandons him to his enforced cleaning duties.

Ch. 54From the Heart: 0-08

Chapter Summary — From the Heart: 0-08

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril performs an elaborate street-magic act outside Backlund Steam Train Station, using Tarot cards, flower petals, doves, and an apparent disappearance to entertain a large crowd.
  • The performance completes the digestion of his Sequence 8 Trickmaster potion. He reflects that he has advanced unusually quickly, largely because of the help and opportunities provided by others.
  • With his injuries mostly healed and official surveillance relaxed, Cyril plans to attend a Beyonder gathering to obtain Meteorite Crystal, the main ingredient needed to advance to Sequence 7 Astrologer.
  • A newspaper reports a catastrophic gas explosion in Tingen that destroyed a security company and caused many deaths. Cyril recognizes this as a sign that dangerous forces connected to Tingen are moving toward Backlund and feels an urgent need to advance.
  • Cyril notices a suspicious man leaving the station. Through his enhanced perception, he sees beyond the man’s disguise and recognizes an unstable, incomplete mythical creature form combining wolf-like, scaled, and feathered traits.
  • The man is revealed to be Ince Zangwill, newly arrived in Backlund and carrying the powerful Sealed Artifact 0-08, the Quill of Alzuhod.
  • Ince attempts to use 0-08 to write a narrative forcing Cyril to forget seeing him. However, Cyril senses the Quill’s influence, identifies it by name, and effectively threatens it with exposure to Adam.
  • 0-08 alters the story, erases its earlier writing, and creates a new “coincidence” in which a valuable Beyonder material falls from the Spirit World directly into Cyril’s hands. The Quill is forced to grant Cyril’s request while pretending that the event is merely accidental.

Character Developments

  • Cyril successfully completes his Trickmaster potion digestion, demonstrating both rapid advancement and improved confidence in his abilities.
  • His performance shows that he is becoming comfortable using deception, misdirection, and theatricality as both entertainment and a Beyonder technique.
  • Cyril’s perception has become powerful enough to see through Ince’s disguise and glimpse his unstable mythical form.
  • He displays growing boldness and resourcefulness by recognizing 0-08 and negotiating with—or blackmailing—it despite its immense power.
  • Ince Zangwill is portrayed as cautious but immediately compromised. Although he prepared disguises and concealment before entering Backlund, Cyril identifies him at once.
  • Ince appears to have just advanced and not yet stabilized his condition. He is also shown to lack control over 0-08, which can manipulate him and force him to write against his will.
  • 0-08 is characterized as intelligent, arrogant, and highly manipulative, but also vulnerable to pressure. It resents Cyril’s threat yet ultimately changes reality to fulfill his demand.

Significant Themes

  • Performance and deception: Cyril’s street magic mirrors the broader supernatural world, where disguises, misdirection, and hidden identities determine survival.
  • Rapid advancement and borrowed advantages: Cyril recognizes that his progress has been unusually easy because powerful individuals and circumstances have helped him.
  • Fate versus manipulation: 0-08 controls events by writing narratives that appear to be coincidences, blurring the boundary between chance and deliberate design.
  • Power and negotiation: Even a seemingly omnipotent artifact can be pressured when its interests, secrets, or alliances are threatened.
  • The arrival of danger: The Tingen disaster and Ince’s appearance signal that larger conflicts are moving into Backlund, making Cyril’s advancement increasingly urgent.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and the public: He wins the crowd’s admiration through a polished magical performance before quietly disappearing.
  • Cyril and Ince: They briefly meet gazes, with Cyril seeing through Ince’s disguise. Their encounter immediately establishes mutual suspicion and danger.
  • Cyril and 0-08: Cyril recognizes the Quill’s attempt to affect him and threatens to reveal Ince’s presence to Adam. In response, 0-08 creates an elaborate supernatural coincidence to deliver the material Cyril wants.
  • Ince and 0-08: Although Ince holds the Quill, the artifact dominates him, using his hand to write and revealing that their relationship is one of uneasy dependence rather than true control.

Ch. 55The Altered Story

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • At a public carriage stand, Cyril senses the approach of powerful Spirit World creatures. Using heightened spiritual perception, he sees a half-bodied mummy pursued by a mass of tentacles covered in eyes. He closes his eyes to avoid being noticed.
  • A mysterious metal box falls from above and lands at Cyril’s feet, piercing his newspaper. Its strange markings block spiritual perception and cause dizziness, suggesting that it is either a magical item or contains one.
  • Unsure whether the box is dangerous, Cyril decides to bring it to Owen, whom he trusts for divination and investigation. He jokingly wonders whether it is a threat or an attempt to buy his silence.
  • Elsewhere, Ince Zangwill struggles against the sentient classical Quill, 0-08, which takes control of his body and writes a narrative on a wall. The Quill initially tries to convince Ince to flee Backlund because the city is too dangerous and crowded with powerful beings.
  • The Quill’s writing abruptly changes, declaring that Ince and the Quill should remain in Backlund and cooperate with the Demoness Sect and the Loen Royal Family. It then invents an explanation for the contradictory writing and causes Ince to lose his memory of the incident.
  • Exhausted by Cyril’s earlier intimidation, 0-08 falls into a temporary slumber and appears to become an ordinary quill.
  • Ince is then approached by Panatia, a beautiful and powerful member of the Demoness Sect. She attempts to seduce him but eventually reveals that her faction wants him to cooperate with the Loen Royal Family.
  • Panatia offers the protection of the Demoness Sect in exchange for Ince’s cooperation and access to the Grade 0 Sealed Artifact he stole from the Church of Evernight. She promises that the Nighthawks will be unable to find him in Backlund unless he enters Saint Samuel Cathedral.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates caution and strong spiritual awareness. Rather than opening the mysterious box, he recognizes his ignorance and seeks Owen’s assistance, showing increasing prudence despite his curiosity and confidence.
  • Ince Zangwill remains wary and resistant, but his situation becomes increasingly precarious. He is forced to contend not only with 0-08’s manipulation but also with the Demoness Sect’s coercive influence.
  • 0-08 displays a greater degree of agency than a normal object, actively controlling Ince, altering reality through narrative, fabricating memories, and reacting fearfully to Cyril. Its temporary exhaustion highlights both its immense power and its limitations.
  • Panatia is introduced as seductive, confident, and politically calculating. Her flirtation is not merely personal; it serves as a tool to pressure and manipulate Ince into accepting the Demoness Sect’s proposal.
  • Ince’s resistance to Panatia’s charms reveals his willpower and his Darkness-pathway abilities, which help him calm his emotions even though he cannot entirely suppress his physical reactions.

Significant Themes

  • Manipulation and loss of agency: Ince is controlled by 0-08, loses memories, and is then targeted by Panatia, leaving him caught between supernatural and political forces.
  • The danger of stories and altered reality: The Quill can impose fictional explanations onto reality, suggesting that narrative itself is a form of power.
  • Caution versus curiosity: Cyril’s refusal to open the box immediately contrasts with the dangers faced by those who act without understanding supernatural objects.
  • Political alliances and survival: Ince must choose between fleeing Backlund and accepting protection from the Demoness Sect and Loen’s royal interests.
  • Temptation and self-control: Panatia’s seduction creates a conflict between physical desire, personal will, and strategic necessity.
  • Uncertainty and hidden motives: The altered messages from 0-08 and Panatia’s unclear intentions emphasize that no apparent explanation can be trusted.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and the Spirit World creatures: Cyril avoids direct contact with the terrifying entities by concealing his presence, yet their passage indirectly leads to the mysterious box falling into his possession.
  • Cyril and the metal box: The box becomes an unexplained gift or threat, prompting Cyril to seek Owen’s expertise.
  • Ince and 0-08: Their relationship is one of constant conflict and reluctant dependence. The Quill controls him, rewrites his circumstances, and erases his memory, while Ince struggles to retain autonomy.
  • Ince and Panatia: Panatia alternates between flirtation and negotiation, testing Ince’s resistance before presenting the Demoness Sect’s offer. Ince refuses to engage until she explains her true purpose, maintaining as much control as possible.
  • The Demoness Sect and the Loen Royal Family: Their proposed cooperation establishes a larger political alliance centered on exploiting the powerful artifact stolen by Ince.

Ch. 56Peacemaker

Chapter Summary: “Peacemaker”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Ince Zangwill accepts Panatia the Demoness’s invitation after realizing that his actions in Tingen have made him a target of three major Churches: Evernight, Storms, and Steam and Machinery.
  • He plans to cooperate with the Demoness Sect to gain protection and establish connections with the Loen Royal Family, which would allow him to hide in Backlund and evade the Churches.
  • Ince and Panatia publicly behave like an intimate couple as they head toward an inn, suggesting that he is deliberately embracing the role and advantages expected of him.
  • A blond priest observes Ince from a distance. He notes that Ince has begun recognizing and exploiting his own characteristics and now possesses a stable “anchor” in the world through his personal thoughts and ambitions.
  • Cyril has a metal box examined by Owen before opening it. Inside are an ornate silver handgun and a parchment written in Feysac.
  • The weapon, originally called the “Holy Silver Gun,” automatically converts ordinary bullets into Holy Silver Bullets with demon-slaying and purification effects.
  • The gun also possesses three abilities:
    • Bullet Storm, which rapidly fires all loaded ammunition.
    • Dawn Mark, which marks targets and causes accumulated marks to erupt.
    • Silver Light Heavy Gun, which transforms the pistol into a powerful melee weapon made of sacred light.
  • Its negative effects include unnatural courage, mental excitement, reduced fear, hostility toward conflict, and a tendency to draw its bearer toward places where conflict is occurring or about to occur.
  • Cyril renames it Peacemaker, humorously reasoning that a weapon that hates conflict may bring “peace” by eliminating everyone involved.
  • He destroys Ethan Love’s excessively romantic letter after reading it.

Character Developments

  • Ince Zangwill shows increasing self-awareness and adaptability. Rather than merely fleeing his enemies, he actively seeks a powerful alliance with the Demoness Sect and the Loen Royal Family.
  • He is also becoming more comfortable using his personal traits and circumstances to his advantage, suggesting that the blond priest’s influence or manipulation has taken effect.
  • Panatia is portrayed as willingly cooperating with Ince and enthusiastically playing the part of his lover, though her true motives remain unclear.
  • The blond priest appears to be monitoring and subtly guiding Ince. He considers Ince’s developing goals and emotional attachments a promising “anchor.”
  • Cyril demonstrates caution by having the box divined before opening it, but he also shows creativity and humor in naming the gun. His analysis of the weapon’s dangers indicates practical awareness despite his fascination with it.
  • Owen serves as a grounded, skeptical companion, reacting with bewilderment to Cyril’s unconventional reasoning.

Significant Themes

  • Manipulation and self-awareness: Ince is not simply being controlled; he is beginning to understand his own nature and use it deliberately, blurring the line between manipulation and personal choice.
  • Anchors and identity: The blond priest emphasizes that personal thoughts, goals, and desires can stabilize a person’s existence, especially in the supernatural world.
  • Power and danger: The Peacemaker’s abilities are impressive, but its mental side effects make it potentially as dangerous to its wielder as to its enemies.
  • Irony and contradiction: A gun named “Peacemaker” is attracted to conflict and may create peace through overwhelming violence. Likewise, a weapon that grants courage can encourage suicidal recklessness.
  • Romantic obsession and absurdity: Ethan Love’s exaggerated letter contrasts comedic affection with the deadly nature of the weapon he created.

Character Interactions

  • Ince and Panatia: Their intimate public behavior marks the beginning of Ince’s cooperation with the Demoness Sect and reflects his willingness to use a romantic appearance for strategic purposes.
  • The blond priest and Ince: Although they do not speak directly, the priest watches and evaluates Ince’s development, implying an ongoing hidden relationship of influence and observation.
  • Cyril and Owen: Cyril shares the weapon and letter with Owen, who reacts skeptically to Cyril’s strange interpretation of the gun’s name. Their exchange highlights Cyril’s imaginative humor and Owen’s practical restraint.
  • Cyril and Ethan Love: Though Ethan is absent, his passionate letter reveals his intense attachment to Greta, which Cyril finds excessive and mocks before burning it.

Ch. 57First Meeting with Klein

Chapter Summary: “First Meeting with Klein”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyril, having fully digested the Trickmaster potion, remains unable to find the Meteorite Crystal needed for his Astrologer potion.
  • Although Adam or the Twilight Hermit Order might be able to help, Cyril has no direct way to contact them and does not want to rely on Adam. He regrets not obtaining King Baros Hopkins’s contact information.
  • Remembering that Klein is due to arrive in Backlund, Cyril diverts his carriage to the steam train station in hopes of encountering him.
  • At the station, Cyril recognizes Klein—not by his appearance, but through the strange Gray Fog, blue-black door, and cocoons visible around him. The vision briefly overwhelms Cyril with an impression of cosmic vastness and mystery.
  • Klein senses that someone is observing him and notices Cyril. They exchange polite nods, but neither approaches the other.
  • Klein recognizes Cyril from the prayers and honorific names Cyril once recited. Based on Justice’s investigation, Klein considers Cyril extremely dangerous because of his mysterious abilities, including hiding in mirrors and taking objects from people without warning.
  • Klein decides not to summon Cyril above the Gray Fog, prioritizing finding lodging and employment after arriving in Backlund.
  • Cyril then goes to Harvest Cathedral, where he encounters Emlyn Vance. Their hostile banter continues, and Cyril unsuccessfully attempts to improve their relationship.
  • Cyril consults Father Utravsky about potion ingredients. Utravsky cannot directly help with Apprentice-pathway materials but informs him about a Beyonder gathering he organizes, held at the third floor of Maple Bar on Tuck Street in Backlund Bridge two days later.

Character Developments

  • Cyril: Shows initiative and resourcefulness in searching for the Meteorite Crystal. His successful Trickmaster digestion has improved his abilities, though Object Manipulation still has a limited five-meter range. He also demonstrates unusual perception by recognizing Klein’s connection to the Gray Fog. Despite his arrogance and provocations, he understands that he must improve his relationship with Emlyn to gain access to Sanguine resources.
  • Klein: Begins establishing himself in Backlund while remaining cautious. He immediately detects Cyril’s observation and evaluates him as a potentially dangerous, unpredictable Beyonder. Klein’s thoughts reveal growing awareness of mysticism networks and the need to expand his contacts, but he chooses practical necessities over investigating Cyril.
  • Emlyn: Remains openly hostile toward Cyril and resents him for causing Emlyn’s punishment and forced labor at the cathedral. His continued anger prevents Cyril from using him as a connection to the Sanguine.
  • Father Utravsky: Acts as a helpful but limited source of information. He confirms that he organizes a gathering for wild Beyonders and offers Cyril a way to attend it.

Significant Themes

  • Fate and coincidence: Cyril deliberately leaves the meeting with Klein to chance, and their brief encounter suggests that their paths are beginning to intersect.
  • Mystery and hidden identities: Klein’s connection to the Gray Fog is visible only through Cyril’s extraordinary perception, while Klein remains unsure of Cyril’s true abilities and pathway.
  • Knowledge as power: Both men seek information and connections to advance their goals. Cyril needs potion ingredients, while Klein needs local contacts, shelter, and employment.
  • Mutual suspicion: Their first meeting is marked by observation rather than conversation. Each recognizes the other as unusual and potentially dangerous.
  • Social relationships and usefulness: Cyril realizes that personal hostility can obstruct access to valuable resources, motivating his attempted reconciliation with Emlyn.
  • The limits of power: Even after digesting his potion, Cyril’s abilities remain constrained by range and uncertainty, while Klein’s vast power and knowledge do not eliminate his practical problems.

Important Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Klein: Exchange a silent greeting at the station. Cyril sees Klein’s connection to the Gray Fog; Klein recognizes Cyril and recalls reports of his terrifying nature.
  • Cyril and Emlyn: Trade insults over Emlyn’s cathedral chores and Cyril’s role in his punishment. Cyril attempts a conciliatory conversation but is rejected.
  • Cyril and Father Utravsky: Discuss potion ingredients and Beyonder gatherings. Utravsky provides the location and time of an upcoming gathering that may help Cyril locate what he needs.

Ch. 58Above the Gray Fog

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After returning from the Harvest Cathedral, Cyril summons Arrodes through a symbol drawn on his mirror and asks where he can obtain a Meteorite Crystal.
  • Arrodes reveals that Backlund contains three such crystals, belonging to the Aurora Order, the Church of Steam, and the Sanguine. The Church of Steam’s crystal is the easiest to obtain because House has enough accumulated merits to exchange for it.
  • Cyril decides to ask Emlyn for help at the Harvest Cathedral the next day, but plans to use House if Emlyn refuses.
  • Arrodes asks Cyril whether he can help it escape the Church of Steam. Cyril refuses, but cryptically predicts that Arrodes will eventually meet and follow someone it sincerely desires to serve.
  • Cyril asks Arrodes about a magical item he recently acquired. Arrodes warns him to keep its former owner from discovering it and not to use it in prolonged battles, since its ability to attract conflict operates on the level of fate. However, it is particularly effective against evil and corrupt entities.
  • Cyril also asks where he can find a complete Brain of Asman and a Cursed Object connected to an Ancient Wraith. Arrodes points him toward the Abraham family, an Asman near Backlund, the Church of the Night, and dangerous ruins or forests outside the city.
  • Arrodes again asks for information about the person it is destined to follow. Cyril refuses to reveal the identity, saying that person has already arrived in Backlund and will be recognized naturally.
  • After Arrodes departs, Cyril realizes he forgot to ask it to relay a message to House.
  • Suddenly, Cyril is pulled above the Gray Fog, despite initially resisting. He arrives in an enormous ancient palace, where the Gray Fog violently repels and weakens him before unexpectedly stabilizing.
  • The mysterious figure seated at the head of the palace—Klein—questions Cyril about the unfamiliar language he spoke.

Character Developments

  • Cyril demonstrates increasing strategic awareness. He prepares multiple routes for obtaining the Meteorite Crystal and recognizes that higher-level ingredients will eventually require him to leave Backlund.
  • He remains cautious and secretive, refusing to reveal Arrodes’s destined master or disclose too much about his magical items.
  • Cyril’s instinctive resistance to the Gray Fog shows his power and self-protective nature, while his decision to stop resisting suggests adaptability and awareness of the consequences of revealing weakness.
  • Arrodes displays both reverence and concealed reluctance toward Cyril. Its desire to escape the Church of Steam and discover its future master becomes more emotionally apparent.
  • Klein actively tests or summons Cyril above the Gray Fog, indicating growing interest in him and concern about his unusual abilities or origins.

Significant Themes

  • Fate and destiny: Arrodes’s future allegiance and the magical item’s ability to attract conflict both emphasize forces operating beyond ordinary choice.
  • Secrecy and information control: Cyril carefully limits what he reveals, while Arrodes provides useful information without fully exposing its own motives.
  • Power and vulnerability: Cyril is powerful in the ordinary world but becomes weak and rejected within the Gray Fog, highlighting the limits of his abilities.
  • Preparation for advancement: The search for rare ingredients reflects Cyril’s progression toward higher Sequences and the increasingly dangerous world he must enter.
  • Unexpected connection: Cyril’s arrival above the Gray Fog brings him into direct contact with Klein, setting up a potentially important relationship.

Character Interactions

  • Cyril and Arrodes: Their exchange is respectful but layered with mutual caution. Cyril uses Arrodes as an information source, while Arrodes seeks both freedom and knowledge of its destined master.
  • Cyril and House/Emlyn: Although neither appears directly, Cyril’s plans revolve around obtaining their assistance—House as a practical fallback and Emlyn as his preferred contact.
  • Cyril and Klein: The chapter ends with their first direct interaction above the Gray Fog, as Klein immediately questions Cyril’s use of an unfamiliar language.

Ch. 59Achieving a Unique Feat!

Chapter Summary: “Achieving the Unique Achievement!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Cyrin Gray arrives above the gray fog after desperately praying to multiple powerful beings. He is surprised that The Fool, Klein, responds to him despite Adam having answered first.
  • Cyrin accidentally speaks Chinese, revealing a possible shared origin with Klein. Klein immediately becomes suspicious and asks about Cyrin’s “hometown” and whether he knows Roselle.
  • Cyrin confirms that he knows Roselle, though he describes him in formal, public terms rather than revealing his knowledge as a fellow transmigrator. Klein recognizes Cyrin’s caution and chooses not to expose his own identity.
  • Klein asks how Cyrin learned The Fool’s honorific name. Cyrin explains that a great existence gave him a revelation, allowing him to avoid revealing that he may have learned it through other means.
  • Cyrin attributes the revelation to an unknown entity called “The Sublime from the Unknown,” “The Door Above the Dimensions,” and “The Incarnation of Art and Fantasy.” Klein has never heard of this being and becomes concerned that it may have foreseen or manipulated their meeting.
  • Klein detects that Cyrin is withholding information but acknowledges that Cyrin has not technically lied. Cyrin apologizes and explains that he cannot directly discuss matters involving other great existences.
  • Klein invites Cyrin to join the regular gathering of Beyonders above the gray fog. Cyrin enthusiastically accepts, regarding the invitation as a special achievement.
  • Cyrin chooses a Tarot codename. Klein secretly leaves only the Wheel of Fortune card for him to select, and Cyrin accepts it as a sign of guidance from the Beacon of Fate.
  • Klein blesses him by encouraging him to control his own destiny and reminds him that the gathering occurs every Monday at two o’clock in the afternoon, Backlund time.
  • Cyrin is sent away, leaving Klein to reflect on the unusual pressure and danger surrounding him. Klein concludes that Cyrin possesses an enormous secret and begins divination to determine whether Cyrin represents a threat.

Character Developments

  • Cyrin Gray: Demonstrates extreme caution, quick thinking, and strong survival instincts. He avoids directly exposing his identity or knowledge while remaining respectful toward Klein. Despite his uncertainty, he willingly joins the gathering and accepts the Wheel of Fortune as his codename, suggesting trust in fate and in the mysterious guidance surrounding him.
  • Klein Moretti / The Fool: Becomes emotionally affected by the possibility that Cyrin is another transmigrator. He maintains his composed, majestic persona while carefully interrogating Cyrin and analyzing every answer. Klein’s suspicion increases when he learns of the unknown entity connected to Cyrin, and he recognizes Cyrin as both potentially useful and dangerous.
  • Adam and other hidden existences: Adam’s rapid response to Cyrin’s prayer establishes that several powerful beings may be monitoring or competing over him, highlighting Cyrin’s unusual significance.

Significant Themes

  • Shared origins and isolation: Cyrin’s Chinese slip and knowledge of Roselle suggest a possible connection to Klein’s own past, creating the hope of companionship between fellow transmigrators while also emphasizing their reluctance to reveal themselves.
  • Caution and deception: Both men carefully conceal information, speak in technically truthful ways, and test each other without openly exposing their identities or intentions.
  • Fate versus free will: The Wheel of Fortune symbolizes Cyrin’s unpredictable path, while Klein’s blessing urges him to take control of his destiny. The chapter repeatedly raises the possibility that powerful beings have arranged or foreseen the encounter.
  • Power and manipulation: Cyrin’s contact with multiple hidden existences suggests that he may be caught in a larger supernatural struggle. Klein’s deliberate manipulation of the Tarot selection shows that even seemingly symbolic choices can be influenced by powerful actors.
  • Performance and identity: Klein’s imposing behavior as The Fool is partly an act, while Cyrin tries to interpret whether it comes from natural talent or the influence of the gray fog. Both characters must constantly perform roles while concealing their true selves.

Character Interactions

  • Klein interrogates Cyrin about his language, hometown, knowledge of Roselle, and source of The Fool’s honorific name.
  • Cyrin responds cautiously, offering partial truths and refusing to directly discuss other great existences.
  • Klein recognizes Cyrin’s intelligence and restraint, while Cyrin is impressed and somewhat intimidated by Klein’s convincing performance as The Fool.
  • Their interaction creates a wary but potentially meaningful bond based on their possible shared homeland and mutual recognition of each other’s secrecy.
  • Klein ultimately accepts Cyrin into the Tarot gathering but remains uncertain whether he is a possible ally, a pawn of hidden entities, or a future threat.
