Background / History

Shintō Katsuya conceived the Yorozuya while looking for a way to earn points and access club funding. After learning that a new club required at least three members, he chose the name—meaning a hired hand who performs various tasks for payment—and began the application process. 7

Karuizawa Kei agreed to join when Shintō accepted her request to act as her fake boyfriend; her membership supplied one of the people needed to establish the club. 19 Shintō later presented the completed organization to Karuizawa, Satō Maya, and Matsushita Chiaki, describing them as its employees and granting them access to the clubroom. 23

The club was officially established after Shintō leveraged evidence of Horikita Manabu's confrontation with Horikita Suzune. In exchange for silence, Manabu agreed to secure funding and advertise the Yorozuya across the school, while Shintō agreed to complete one Student Council request per week within negotiated limits. 22 23

Within two days, Student Council advertisements had publicized the Yorozuya's request format, address, and purpose to students, faculty, and shopping-district staff. Its unusually well-equipped room and Manabu's public support quickly made it a subject of school-wide attention. 23

After a month of operation, Manabu confirmed that the Yorozuya had completed his commissions on time, though he warned that the school administration was monitoring the club following its more conspicuous activities. 43

Operations

Request Procedure

• Requests are submitted as letters using a designated format and delivered to the mailbox outside the clubroom. 23

The fourth principle was contested by Manabu, who accepted the first three restrictions but required Shintō to complete his weekly commissions rather than reject them at will. 22

Business Model

The Yorozuya distinguishes itself from charitable clubs and detective agencies by charging for completed work. Shintō describes ordinary assistance to classmates as free but treats more difficult intervention as a formal, paid Yorozuya request. 23 44

Its services can also turn a transaction into a commission. When Kojima Hayato attempted to hire Shintō to acquire an item, Shintō required him to sign a commission form and pay an additional service fee, offering “priority line-cutting rights” as part of the arrangement. 27

Horikita Suzune initially believed the flyers' implication that the Yorozuya would “do anything” for payment, only to learn that its services remain subject to its four principles and high fees for difficult work. 43 44

Although Shintō claims the club helps people solve problems, its practical operation prioritizes profit, negotiated compensation, and the president's willingness to act. 23 40 44
