The darkness of deep space was pure, so dense even starlight could barely pierce it, like velvet soaked through with ink, swallowing every clamor and glimmer.
Only Ian's figure stood out clearly in that dead silence. He was barefoot, his soles touching nothing solid, yet he hovered steadily in the void, as though the darkness beneath his feet were firm ground. He wore a simple black shirt, its hem swaying faintly in some invisible cosmic current.
Yet it never picked up the slightest speck of dust.
The boy held a fist-sized blue egg tightly in his arms. Fine motes of fluorescent light flowed across its shell, as if an entire stretch of starry sky had been compressed inside it.
A warm halo seeped through the fabric, spreading a soft circle of light across his chest.
