Background & History

The Yellow Sand Sect was the dominant sect of the Cultivation World of the Boundless Sea of Sand for over a thousand years and possessed more than 2,700 years of heritage. Its control of major oases, resources, cultivation techniques, and treasures made admission highly sought after by local cultivators 1 238.

Its mountain gate stood on a giant scallop-shaped oasis spanning over 5,000 li north to south and 4,000 li east to west. The oasis supported four to five million mortals, extensive artificial waterways, spiritual mountains, and cultivator-operated rainmaking that maintained a favorable climate 95 98.

The sect’s standing was severely tested by the Blood Fiend Demonic Sect’s invasion. It pursued the Sand Bandits, discovered their demonic backing, and mobilized affiliated forces to suppress the threat. Although it destroyed the demonic sect’s local stronghold, it suffered extensive losses in later attacks and ultimately lost its Golden Core cultivator Jiang Ming 84 110 114 125.

After Cao Wenjin was gravely injured during the Rhino Horn Continent expedition and later died, the sect lost its Golden Core protection and entered a period of internal division. Luo Yunqing and Guo Shuyun rebelled, affiliated families withdrew their allegiance, and the sect’s authority over the Boundless Sea of Sand declined sharply 253 254 265.

Zhang Yunpeng, Zhou Yang, Chen Pingan, and their allies eventually suppressed the rebellion at Falling Phoenix Mountain. To reinforce external ties afterward, Zhang offered Guest Elder positions to prominent Violet Palace cultivators, including Zhou Yang 275 277 278.

Five hundred years later, after Zhou Yang formed his Nascent Soul, he ended the protection agreement previously made with the sect and compelled it to become a vassal sect of the Zhou Family. The sect retained its disciples and giant oasis at first, but surrendered its external territories, mineral veins, and resource sites 677 678.

The Yellow Sand Sect later handed over its original giant-oasis mountain gate to the Zhou Family. In compensation, it received cultivation resources, a newly advanced fifth-tier Spirit Vein at its relocated mountain gate, and exemption from future tribute 820.

Organization & Recruitment

• The sect consisted of tens of thousands of cultivators; only around 10% were descendants of sect cultivators.
• About half of its remaining members came from affiliated families and rogue cultivators under its authority, while the other half were recruited from mortals living on the sect’s giant oasis and directly controlled oases 95.
• Mortals with promising spiritual-root aptitude could be directly recruited as disciples. Zhang Yunpeng, for example, rose from an ordinary mortal family on the giant oasis after his high-grade aptitude was discovered 95.
• The sect maintained an Affairs Hall, responsible for handling external affairs, treasure exchanges, and conscripted cultivators. Guo Shuyun served as its head before joining Luo Yunqing’s rebellion 101 237 276.
• Its Pill Pavilion, Artifact Hall, Talisman Hall, treasury, and external shops processed and distributed demonic-beast materials, pills, artifacts, and talismans 121.

Affiliated Forces

The sect historically maintained authority over cultivation families, rogue cultivators, spiritual mountains, and dozens of desert oases. Affiliated forces could be ordered into service through conscription; a conscription order bearing a Golden Core cultivator’s mana imprint required unconditional compliance, with refusal treated as rebellion 1 237.

• Giant Oasis — The sect’s former central territory, featuring mountains, lakes, reservoirs, canals, cultivated lands, and a large mortal population 95 98.
• Mountain Protection Array — A fifth-tier mid-grade formation. It was fully activated after Jiang Ming’s death, covering hundreds of miles around the mountain gate in earth-yellow spiritual light 125.
• Communication formations — The sect began installing communication formations on spirit mountains following the demonic invasion 115.
• Merit Point system — Merit Points could be exchanged for sect resources and services, including Foundation Establishment Pills, formations, and assistance from specialist cultivators 98 100.
• External shops — The sect operated shops in locations such as Golden Sand Market; their robbery by Sand Bandits contributed to the sect’s intervention in the White Sand River Oasis crisis 49 70.
• Identity control — The sect possessed the identity-identifying artifact Mirror of True Identification, though its refining method was not available for purchase 100.

• Divine Sand Gourd — The sect’s inherited artifact and emblematic treasure. Its divine sand could kill Golden Core cultivators 49.
  • Contains Soul Falling Divine Sand, Black Fiend Divine Sand, and Crimson Flame Divine Sand 241.
  • Cao Wenjin used it against the fifth-tier Golden Horned Rhinoceros during the Rhino Horn Continent expedition 241.
• Hidden Spirit Incense — A secret spiritual item used to conceal a cultivator’s spiritual-light fluctuations. Its formula was later transferred to the Zhou Family as part of the sect’s concessions 175 553.
• Earth Covering Yellow Sand Formation — A third-tier low-grade formation created by a Yellow Sand Sect fourth-tier formation master over a thousand years earlier.

• Sand Bandit crisis — Sand Bandits attacked White Sand River Oasis, robbed Yellow Sand Sect property, and prompted the sect to dispatch Zhang Yunpeng, a Violet Palace cultivator, and ten Foundation Establishment cultivators to investigate 49 70.
• Blood Fiend Demonic Sect invasion — Zhang Yunpeng identified the demonic threat, rallied cultivators with rewards, and reported the invasion to the sect’s Golden Core leadership 84 95.
• Demonic Cave battle — Cao Wenjin led nine Violet Palace cultivators and used the Divine Sand Gourd to assault the demonic stronghold, crippling the Blood Fiend Demonic Sect’s local forces 109 110 111.
