Background / History

Class D is one of the four first-year classes at Advanced Nurturing High School. On the entrance day, its students stand apart from the more orderly Classes A and B and the comparatively unruly Class C: they loudly discuss spending their initial 100,000 private points, boast, lie, and make lewd jokes despite attempts by a few students to stop them 2.

The school places Class D at the bottom of its class hierarchy. Chabashira Sae states that the school evaluates students by ability, assigns its strongest students to Class A, and uses Class D as the “final fortress” for its underachievers 21. Uesugi Gen initially judges many of its students as lacking the basic qualities expected of students 2.

During the first month, widespread lateness, private conversations during class, and other misconduct lead to 1,834 deducted points. The class reaches -100 class points, an unprecedented result at the school according to Chabashira 21.

Organization and Internal Dynamics

Class D is marked by poor cohesion and frequent internal conflict.

• Students repeatedly blame one another when faced with consequences, particularly during the expulsion crisis involving Sudo Ken, Yamauchi Haruki, and Ike Kanji 31.

Initial Class-Point Collapse

Class D’s undisciplined conduct causes its class points to plummet to -100. Chabashira uses the result to reveal that only graduates of Class A receive the school’s employment and higher-education recommendations, leaving the class shocked and demoralized 20 21.

Target of Uesugi Gen and Hoshinomiya Chie

After learning of Chabashira’s determination to promote Class D, Uesugi and Hoshinomiya agree to work against the class’s advancement. Uesugi also recruits Kushida to use her social influence to corrupt Class D and reduce Horikita’s monthly gains to zero 22 16.

Expulsion Crisis and Class B Contract

Three Class D students face expulsion after failing exams. Horikita proposes purchasing back their missing scores with private points, while Hirata seeks loans from other classes 31. Uesugi ultimately pressures Class D into accepting a contract: in exchange for restoring the students, Horikita must accept one of his demands during the next special exam 32.

The agreement intensifies resentment within Class D. Many students object to sacrificing a future condition and treating 1.9 million points as a debt to save classmates they consider responsible for their own failure 33.

Conflict with Class C

Yamauchi’s assault on Class C students causes further damage to Class D’s position. Horikita seeks evidence against Class C and turns to Class B for assistance 34 35. Uesugi obtains Sakura Airi’s camera and finds photographs that can implicate both Class C and Class D in the incident 36.

Uninhabited Island Special Exam

Class D enters the island survival exam in a disorganized state, openly protesting the limited tents and survival conditions before the rules are fully announced 46. Its internal dispute over purchasing supplies continues after landing, allowing Uesugi to intervene with a contract demanding 150 points’ worth of supplies from the class 48.
