Background / History
Yu Xiaogang first appears at Nuoding City Junior Spirit Master Academy as a low-soul-power theorist seeking an opportunity to validate his martial-soul theories. After deducing Tang San's Twin Martial Souls from his Innate Full Soul Power and Blue Silver Grass, he accepts Tang San as a disciple and regards him as the means to prove himself. When Ye Liuyun denies possessing Twin Martial Souls, Yu sacrifices Ye's credibility to preserve his own authority before Tang San. 1
Though knowledgeable in theory, Yu proves physically frail and ineffective in dangerous field situations. During Tang San's first Spirit Ring hunt, he struggles in the Soul Hunting Forest, uses Luo Sanpao to repel Nether Wolves, and is injured by a four-hundred-year Datura Snake. Tang San begins questioning whether his teacher can protect him in practice. 6
Yu repeatedly treats Ye Liuyun as a misguided example whose talent was wasted by rejecting his instruction. He attempts to recruit and lecture him after the Star Dou Great Forest expedition, but Ye dismisses him; Yu privately vows to make Ye regret the rejection. 42
As Shrek's instructor, Yu imposes group endurance training, promotes Tang San's authority, and organizes the team around Tang San as core commander. He initially assigns Ye Liuyun as a tournament substitute because of Ye's overlapping role with Tang San, then later replaces Tang with Ye as core against the Heaven Dou Royal Academy team—privately intending Ye's expected defeat to demonstrate Tang San's importance. 47 48 55 58
After the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan is destroyed, Yu is left traumatized and humiliated. Ye Liuyun secretly plants a Blue Silver Grass seed on him to use him as a conduit toward Tang San or Bibi Dong. Yu seeks Bibi Dong's aid, then, believing her dead, turns to Tang San and Tang Hao as his remaining hope for revenge. 153 156
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a decadent-looking, middle-aged man whose usual presentation emphasizes an affected scholarly dignity. Following the destruction of his clan, his appearance deteriorates drastically. 1 153
- Often stands with his hands behind his back and his head raised in a deliberately profound pose. 1 42
- Has a stiff, rigid facial expression. 1 42
- After the clan's destruction, he is described with tangled hair, bloodshot eyes, stubble, wrinkled clothing, and a lingering musty odor. 153 156
- Loses teeth on both sides of his mouth: first from Ye Liuyun, then from Tang San's uncontrolled slap. 157
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical knowledge and craves recognition for it. He frames his judgments as unquestionable conclusions, particularly when addressing students, and reacts poorly when his authority or expertise is challenged. His insistence that Ye Liuyun possesses Twin Martial Souls—and his decision to portray Ye as dishonest when contradicted—shows his willingness to protect his reputation at another's expense. 1
His confidence often masks insecurity over his low cultivation and poor combat ability. He is eager for validation from powerful figures, interpreting Ning Fengzhi's guarded praise of the Seven-in-One Fusion Skill as full endorsement despite Chen Xin's criticism of the technique's practicality. 42 113
Later events portray Yu as opportunistic and desperate. His declarations of affection toward Bibi Dong are exposed as tied to her power and status, and upon believing her dead, he focuses on losing a potential source of assistance for revenge rather than mourning her. 154 156
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul: Luo Sanpao
Yu's Martial Soul is Luo Sanpao, which he uses defensively in the Soul Hunting Forest. Its combat performance is portrayed as weak and comical compared with the threats he faces. 6
- Repels Nether Wolves with a fart-like attack. 6
- Does not prevent Yu from being incapacitated by a four-hundred-year Datura Snake. 6
Spirit Master Theory
Yu is recognized for extensive theoretical knowledge despite his limited practical strength. His initial deduction of Tang San's Twin Martial Souls earns Tang's trust and leads Tang to become his disciple. 1
- Formulated the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. 1 113
- Gives Spirit Ring and cultivation guidance to Tang San. 5 8
- Plans Shrek's tournament formation, assigning Tang San as core commander. 55
- Develops the Seven-in-One Fusion Skill, which channels the spirit power of seven students into Tang San for a single amplified attack. 113
- The skill is criticized by Chen Xin as simple spirit-power stacking rather than a true Martial Soul Fusion Skill, with limited practical use in mobile combat. 113
Team Training and Strategy
Yu emphasizes hierarchy, discipline, sacrifice, and coordinated action within the Shrek team. 47 55 79
- Orders group endurance drills in which the entire team is denied food if one member fails to finish. 47
- Uses training arrangements to strengthen Tang San's leadership position. 48
- Criticizes Ye Liuyun for missing morning drills and lacking team spirit. 79
- Is willing to use Ye Liuyun's anticipated loss as a lesson to reinforce Tang San's value to the team. 58
Relationships
- Tang San — His disciple and principal hope for proving his theories; Yu relies on Tang's talent and later seeks his support for revenge. 1 157
- Ye Liuyun — A rejected prospective disciple whom Yu repeatedly labels as misguided; their conflict is rooted in Ye's refusal to validate Yu's guidance. 1 42 58
- Bibi Dong — A former lover whom Yu seeks out after his clan's destruction; his professed affection is exposed as entangled with her power and status. 153 154 156
- Hu Liena — Tests Yu while disguised as Bibi Dong and exposes the insincerity of his declaration of love. 154
- Flender — Attempts to smooth over Yu's confrontation with Ye Liuyun and remains beside him during Shrek training. 42 79
- Liu Erlong — Watches Yu during training with visible affection and tenderness. 79
- Ning Fengzhi — Politely evaluates Yu's Seven-in-One Fusion Skill, offering qualified praise that Yu mistakes for unequivocal approval. 113
- Chen Xin — Criticizes Yu's Seven-in-One Fusion Skill as inefficient simple amplification rather than a genuine fusion skill. 113
- Tang Yuehua — Recognizes Yu at Moonlight Pavilion and verifies his clan affiliation despite her personal disdain for his condition. 157
