Jiang Huai and Tang San exchanged a glance, then nodded to each other as everyone entered a state of combat readiness.
"Wait a moment!"
Jiang Huai had asked them to hold off on attacking so that the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent would draw closer, allowing for a single, fatal strike.
The Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent soon reached their front, and Jiang Huai leaped up, grabbing the tail of the serpent as it flew over his head. Holding onto its tail, Jiang Huai said coldly, "So you're the one they call the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent, huh?"
Jiang Huai violently slammed the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent backward. Seeing this, Xiao Wu and Tang San quickly dodged, and the serpent spat out a mouthful of swill from the impact.
"Teacher Zhao!"
Hearing this, Zhao Wuji rubbed his hands together and laughed, "Hahaha! I've been itching for some action."
The Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent was dizzy, its belly facing the sky. Without a second thought or asking for the snake's opinion, Zhao Wuji leaped up and slammed his body heavily onto its white underbelly.
The Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent was nearly crushed to death; its tongue hung out, and it was unable to move.
Jiang Huai took "Jiang Ling" out of his Soul Guidance Device and tossed it to Oscar. Oscar took a step forward, and the sword nearly landed on his head.
Jiang Huai rubbed his forehead, speechless. Oscar gripped "Jiang Ling" and severed the head of the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent with one stroke, then flipped the tongue over to cut off the meat crest.
A purple soul ring floated up from the corpse of the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent. Jiang Huai retrieved "Jiang Ling" and wiped the fishy scent off the blade with a leaf he found nearby.
Oscar sat cross-legged and reached out his right hand to touch the soul ring. As the power of the purple soul ring invaded his body, Oscar immediately closed his eyes to absorb it.
Jiang Huai leaned against the trunk of a tree, waiting for the time to pass. Just then, two elderly people appeared, accompanied by a young girl.
The girl's name was Meng Yiran, and she had already finished absorbing her soul ring. She had only begged her grandfather and grandmother to come after hearing the sounds of the fight.
Hidden in the shadows, Jiang Yi frowned and muttered, "The Peerless Dragon and Snake couple? Haven't they already finished hunting their soul rings? What are they doing here?"
Jiang Huai leaned against the tree and pulled up his black-gold mask to cover his mouth and nose. Gu Yue walked over to his side and leaned against the tree as well.
The two of them leaning together made for a beautiful sight, and Meng Yiran stared at Jiang Huai, completely dazed.
Meng Shu gave a light cough, and Meng Yiran finally snapped out of it. She turned her head away, blushing, and remained silent.
Meng Shu announced his name, "I am the Dragon of the Peerless Dragon and Snake, named Meng Shu. I wonder if you all were the ones who killed a Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent?"
Hearing this, Zhao Wuji cupped his hands in a salute and said, "So it is the senior Dragon Duke of the Peerless Dragon and Snake. I am the Immovable Bright King, Zhao Wuji. Please forgive my lack of a proper welcome."
The group chatted and laughed for who knows how long. Oscar successfully finished absorbing the soul ring of the Phoenix-Tail Crested Serpent. Jiang Huai opened his closed eyes, his gaze locked onto Oscar.
Oscar opened his eyes and stretched, looking as if he had just woken from a long dream. If he could, Jiang Huai would have slapped him across the face.
Although Oscar was older, he still wouldn't have been able to handle a slap from him.
When the Dragon Duke heard from Zhao Wuji that Jiang Huai also needed to hunt for a soul ring, he was somewhat surprised. Judging by his soul power, Jiang Huai looked to be only twelve years old; how could he have reached level forty so quickly?
He looked at his granddaughter, Meng Yiran, then sighed and said, "Then I shall help you hunt a thousand-year soul beast."
The Dragon Duke looked at Jiang Huai and asked, "Boy, tell me what kind of soul beast soul ring you want."
Jiang Huai shook his head and said, "The soul ring I need is not here."
Hearing this, the Dragon Duke laughed heartily, stroked his white beard, and said, "This is the habitat of all kinds of soul beasts; how could it not be here? Tell me the name, perhaps we just encountered one earlier."
Jiang Huai pondered for a moment and said, "I want an eight-to-nine-thousand-year Flowing Slurry Water Curtain."
Hearing this, the Dragon Duke nearly choked on his own saliva. He looked at Jiang Huai and said with some irritation, "Do you know that the soul beast you speak of is in the lake at Sweet Valley in the Sunset Forest?"
Jiang Huai nodded and said, "I know."
The Dragon Duke twitched his mouth, but he agreed nonetheless. Since he was an elder, if he promised to do something, he had to see it through; otherwise, how could he maintain his image in front of his granddaughter?
And so, Jiang Huai and Gu Yue left with the Dragon Duke and Meng Yiran. Before leaving, Jiang Huai told Tang San to take good care of Xiao Wu.
If things were going to go wrong, they would go wrong. The Dragon Duke placed the three of them on his dragon back, and they headed toward the Sunset Forest.
The group had already traveled some distance, but an accident had already occurred on Tang San's side: a hundred-thousand-year Titan Giant Ape had attacked them.
The Titan Giant Ape abducted Xiao Wu. Seeing this, Tang San was devastated. He immediately charged forward, only to be sent stumbling back by a roar from the Titan Giant Ape.
What happened afterward was the same as the original story. Because he wanted to save Xiao Wu, Tang San forcibly circulated his Mysterious Heaven Technique, raising his soul power by one level and reaching level thirty directly.
He ate the sausage Oscar had given him and flew off, while Jiang Huai and Gu Yue were still unaware of this.
On the dragon's back, Gu Yue leaned backward into Jiang Huai's arms. Jiang Huai caught her and flicked her nose.
Gu Yue sniffed, her face flushed, and Meng Yiran, who was nearby, looked dejected at the sight.
Soon, the four of them arrived at the shore of the lake in Sweet Valley in the Sunset Forest. Jiang Huai vaguely sensed a trace of dragon might, but he didn't pay it much mind, placing the bait on the shore before hiding to wait.
The Dragon Duke told Jiang Huai, "Boy, the eight-thousand-year Flowing Slurry Water Curtain you want is very difficult to find. It all depends on your luck."
Three days passed quickly, and they had already wasted five large bags of bait. Now, only the last bit of bait remained; if that eight-to-nine-thousand-year beast didn't appear, they would be out of bait.
Three hours passed, and suddenly, a large Flowing Slurry Water Curtain leaped out of the water. Seeing no one around, it began to eat the bait.
As the bait was bitten, it let out a shriek, and the Dragon Duke reacted instantly, striking out with his staff.
The ten-thousand-year Flowing Slurry Water Curtain roared and was immediately restrained. Jiang Huai was stunned at the sight and said, "Since when is playing with this thing so easy?"
Meng Yiran proudly patted her ample chest and said, "That goes without saying. My grandfather is a Spirit Douluo of the agility-attack system."
Jiang Huai nodded and said, "Fair enough."
Soon, Jiang Huai took out "Jiang Ling" and stabbed his sword into the belly of the Flowing Slurry Water Curtain. Before long, a black soul ring floated before everyone's eyes.
Just as Jiang Huai reached out to touch it, the Dragon Duke felt a chill down his spine and shouted, "Don't!"
It was too late; Jiang Huai's hand had already touched the black soul ring. The soul ring turned into four black lines that appeared above Jiang Huai's head, beginning to re-condense the soul ring.
Jiang Huai couldn't be bothered with what the Dragon Duke had said; he simply sat cross-legged on the ground to absorb the soul ring.
