Background / History
Minato followed the trail of hair Kushina left during her kidnapping, but reached the cave after Hiroki’s fight with the Cloud ninja had ended. He identified the technique used on two of the bodies as Kumogakure’s Lightning Style: False Darkness and asked Hiroki about it at the hospital 8.
Minato, Kushina, and Hiroki subsequently graduated early. After Jiraiya tested the three, the Third Hokage assigned Minato to Jiraiya, while Hiroki and Kushina were placed on a different training path. On leaving the Hokage’s office, Minato called the two his rivals 11 17 18.
Minato later learned the Flying Thunder God Technique and joined the Third Hokage’s Shadow Guard Squad alongside Hiroki. At the Five Kage Summit, the three used the technique to escape a battle with Uchiha Madara’s forces. During a later sea battle, Minato used Hiroki’s shared Byakugan vision and mental coordinates to locate and strike enemies across the battlefield 141 145 149 156.
A Minato from the future also appears in the story. He and his student Uchiha Obito travel into the past to oppose Hiroki and attack Kushina. Hiroki later captures this future Minato and accesses his memories 175 177 189. The Minato of the current timeline continues to serve Konoha; he later takes Obito as a student and leads a team on a Land of Wind inspection mission 221.
Appearance
Minato has blond hair, blue eyes, and a gentle expression in his youth 8 63. His future counterpart is recognizable by the same blond hair and blue eyes, though Hiroki observes him with a cold expression during their confrontation 177.
Personality
Minato is courteous and modest about his achievements, thanking the Third Hokage after passing his test while acknowledging that the Hokage had gone easy on him. He nevertheless takes visible pride in joining the Shadow Guard Squad and hopes to become Hokage 142.
He wants to protect Konoha, his comrades, and the peace. Although he is willing to support Hiroki’s proposed unification of the Shinobi World, he says he would oppose Hiroki if the process endangered the village or its people 184.
