Background & History
Early life
Kushina is an Uzumaki orphan from the Land of Whirlpools who grows up in Konoha as an outsider. Her long red hair and accent make her a target for isolation and ridicule from other children, who call her names such as “Tomato” and “Chili.” 1 193
Although Sawada Hiroki initially tries to avoid her, Kushina repeatedly drags the withdrawn boy into her activities. She appears brash and easily provoked, but she protects Hiroki when Kumogakure ninja corner him despite being visibly terrified herself. 1
Kumogakure’s attempted kidnapping of Kushina is motivated by her Uzumaki vitality and chakra, as the village seeks a possible vessel for the Eight-Tails. During the incident, she and Hiroki communicate through modified text files within their consciousness spaces and coordinate an escape. 1 5
Genin training
Kushina graduates alongside Hiroki and Namikaze Minato. Minato is assigned to Jiraiya, while Kushina and Hiroki wait to be assigned to Orochimaru; they later operate with Senju Nawaki as Team 7. 17 40
During Jiraiya’s assessment, Kushina breaks free of killing-intent genjutsu through the Uzumaki Clan’s vitality and mental strength. Her direct fighting style relies on pouring abundant chakra into physical attacks, but Jiraiya easily avoids her unrefined assault. 15
Orochimaru’s later assessment leaves her feeling powerless beside Hiroki. Refusing to remain someone who must be protected, she resolves to seek Uzumaki Mito’s guidance and find her own route to strength. 28
Kushina learns that Mito will not teach her advanced Uzumaki fuinjutsu until she has improved her chakra control and attained Chunin rank. Rather than abandoning her ambition, she declares her intent to become Konoha’s first female Hokage. 32 40
Becoming the Nine-Tails’ host
Kushina voluntarily seeks the role of Nine-Tails jinchūriki, understanding that she may lose freedom and become feared by others. Her motive is not revenge against those who mistreated her, but the desire to prove she belongs in Konoha, stand beside Hiroki, and become Hokage. 32
Mito guides her into the Nine-Tails’ seal world, where Kushina confronts the beast’s overwhelming hatred and killing intent. Although frightened, she refuses to submit. 82
When Mito’s life finally fails, the Nine-Tails is transferred into Kushina. Hiroki enters the sealing space during the process, while Mito’s final guidance urges Kushina to fill her heart with love before hatred can consume it. 103 105
After becoming a jinchūriki, Kushina is largely confined to Uzumaki Tower for safety and studies fuinjutsu. Hiroki gives her a Byakugan Necklace so she can observe Konoha from the tower rather than remain completely isolated. 120
Resolve and mastery
Kushina grows increasingly frustrated at being treated as a protected symbol rather than a contributor to Konoha’s development. Hiroki’s political and technical knowledge also makes her fear that she is being left behind, motivating her to train, study ninjutsu, and memorize policies with relentless determination. 176 203
When Hiroki proposes that she fully tame the Nine-Tails, Kushina accepts despite her fear. She withstands the beast’s negative emotions, manifests eight Adamantine Attacking Chains, and defeats its resistance through her own resolve. 201 203
Her victory produces a stable golden-red Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. She can access the Nine-Tails’ full power without losing herself, becoming a Tailed Beast-level force for Konoha. 204
Temporal assault and later life
A future Namikaze Minato and Uchiha Obito attack Kushina and Hiroki in an attempt to prevent Hiroki’s influence on history. Kushina’s right arm is severed, and the attack initially results in her death by Minato’s Flying Thunder God kunai. 177
The attackers later discuss the possibility of timeline rollback caused by altering Kushina’s fate. Subsequent chapters depict Kushina alive, able to leave the tower, continuing her relationship with Hiroki, and later giving birth to their son, Naruto Uzumaki. 180 193 221
Appearance
Kushina is distinguished by her long, flame-red Uzumaki hair, which is initially worn loose and later tied into a ponytail. Her appearance becomes notably more athletic as her chakra and physical conditioning improve. 1 120 193
- Long red hair, frequently compared to a hot pepper or tomato. 1 18
- Develops visible abdominal muscles through training and increased chakra. 120
- In Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, her eyes become golden-orange slits and her body is covered by a golden-red chakra robe patterned with black magatama. 204
- Her transformed chakra can form multiple arm-like appendages behind her. 204
Personality
Kushina is energetic, outspoken, and hot-tempered. She reacts strongly to mockery about her hair or appearance, yet Hiroki’s calm use of the same nicknames affects her differently because he treats her as an ordinary classmate rather than an outsider. 1 18
She is impulsive in battle and often acts before fully considering the danger, but her courage is sincere. She steps in to defend Hiroki against Kumogakure ninja, confronts the Nine-Tails despite fear, and immediately races to his aid when she senses him fighting Nagato. 1 82 210
Kushina is also deeply empathetic. She asks Hiroki to help an elderly farmer struggling with drought-hardened soil and is moved by Hiroki’s vision of using ninjutsu to improve ordinary people’s lives. 193
Her greatest insecurity is the fear of being left behind by Hiroki, Minato, and the changing world around her. Rather than surrender to that fear, she turns it into determination to train harder, study governance, master the Nine-Tails, and become Konoha’s first female Hokage. 18 59 176 203

Nine-Tails Chakra Mode
After mastering the Nine-Tails, Kushina gains access to its chakra without losing control.
