History

Military Police era

The Uchiha were Konoha's foremost policing clan, identified by their red-and-white fan crest and dark-blue Military Police uniforms. Their position gave individual members considerable influence over civilians and other ninja. 71 87 168 220

The clan's reputation was damaged by members who used their authority for extortion. Uchiha patrolman Tekka demanded “security fees” from pig farmer Yamada Naka and attempted to intimidate Sawada Hiroki before being instantly incapacitated. 167

The copying-ninja misunderstanding

When the Third Hokage assigned Uchiha Togashi to mentor an unidentified genius capable of copying ninjutsu, Togashi and the wider clan assumed the student had awakened the Sharingan. Their excitement turned to suspicion when clan records showed no such prodigy among the Uchiha. 71

Togashi briefly considered whether the unknown ninja could be a descendant of Uchiha Madara, but the copying genius was ultimately revealed to be Hiroki rather than an Uchiha clansman. 71

Relations with Hiroki

Uchiha Yoshihiro, Togashi's son, attempted to bully Hiroki in the Konoha Archives after being refused help locating Fire Release scrolls. Hiroki incapacitated him with genjutsu without physical contact. 87

Togashi responded by forcing Yoshihiro to apologize and disciplining him for abusing his clan status. Later, he approached Hiroki with gifts and 100,000 ryō to formally apologize on the clan's behalf. 88 108

When Hiroki exposed Tekka's extortion at Yamada Naka's farm, Uchiha Fugaku personally arrived to investigate. Hiroki transmitted his recorded account of the incident directly into Fugaku's mind. 167 169

Reorganization

Under the Fourth Hokage's changing policies, many Uchiha became dissatisfied with poorly paid police work and began seeking other employment. 220

Uchiha Yoshihiro joined the Construction Corps, where he improved his chakra control through heat-management work and earned enough to purchase an expensive tachi, changing how his clansmen viewed him. 198

Following Sasuke Uchiha's birth, Fugaku ordered a large-scale transition away from policing. Military Police staffing was voluntarily reduced by two-thirds; many remaining officers became community mediators, while other clansmen moved into factories, agriculture, and commercial work. 221

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha's defining ocular ability. It is associated with observing and copying ninjutsu through sight, leading the clan to initially assume that any ninja with a copying ability had to be an Uchiha. 22 71
