For several days in a row, nothing changed in the underground research. It was still the middle-aged woman, Wen Di, waving picture cards with English letters in front of Ba Di and making him look at them, while reading the English letters on the cards in her somewhat shrill voice with obvious impatience.
Wen Di was not the only one growing impatient. Ba Di felt equally irritated, his heart filled with agitation.
Teaching him English—after giving it a little thought, Ba Di understood that they wanted him to explain the various functions of the small spacecraft. They wanted the knowledge in his head, so they were impatient. Even if they had to force-feed him, they wanted him to learn something.
There was only one explanation: with their current technology, they could no longer research anything further. The spacecraft was far too advanced, and it was incomplete besides. They were already helpless and wanted his assistance.
Being treated like a prisoner while they still wanted to squeeze every scrap of knowledge from his mind filled Ba Di with rage.
I swear... one day, when I am free, everyone in this base will die!
Yet he could only force down the burning anger in his heart and continuously circulate the Meditation Technique to calm himself.
He could not reveal any emotion or attitude. Once they believed that he could communicate with people besides Jenny, his plan to place Jenny in a unique position would fail.
If he went too long without appearing before her, the impression he had made would gradually fade, until it could no longer stir any ripples in her heart.
In love, the one whose emotions fluctuated too violently, who cared too much about the other person, would lose completely.
He had learned that in his previous life, and he had put it into practice in this one.
Perhaps Jenny had no interest in a story about how deeply devoted he was, one worth exploring. Or perhaps he had not drawn her in enough to make her want to uncover his heart. Worst of all, she might already have someone, too busy flirting to care about the story he seemed to want to discuss with her.
More than seven days passed without Jenny appearing before him. It made him wonder whether he had expressed the wrong emotions in their exchanged gaze that day, or whether Jenny simply was not that sentimental—perhaps her rationality outweighed her emotions? Ba Di considered it carefully and found it entirely possible. At such a young age, she already held second-level authority at the important Underground Research Institute. Rational thought likely occupied the greater part of her mind.
He pondered carefully and began planning what sort of impression he could leave in her heart the next time he had a chance to face her.
As far as Ba Di was concerned, the scene he had staged with that exchanged gaze last time had more or less failed.
That day, Jenny once again appeared in the stark white room to give Ba Di a Muscle Relaxant Injection. The Kryptonian genes possessed recovery abilities that made him far stronger than ordinary Earthlings, even without exposure to the sun.
This Muscle Relaxant Injection could ease the proteins between muscles, allowing them to separate the Deoxyribonucleic Acid within the cells more easily for research. It was not merely meant to relax Ba Di's muscles for cellular restoration research.
Jenny entered in high heels, the crisp tap-tap-tap echoing as she came in, just as she had last time to give Ba Di a Muscle Relaxant Injection.
She was tall and slender, with a cold, glamorous air about her. Her strange gaze swept over Ba Di for a moment before moving away.
Ever since Ba Di had met her eyes with that complex look last time, she had felt a little concerned and strange about it.
After all, the alien had never reacted before. Yet upon hearing her voice, he had looked as though he were recalling something, as if he had seen some memory from the past. As someone who loved biological research, she could not help but dwell on it. What kind of experiences and past did this alien have?
A man with a story was always especially likely to attract women.
Not to mention that this alien only reacted to her, which made her a little curious.
Ba Di kept his head lowered. When those slender calves suddenly entered his field of vision, his heart stirred, but he did not raise his head.
He had established himself as an alien prince who only reacted upon hearing Jenny's voice. Last time had also been the first time he heard her voice, and he had shown shock.
After Jenny greeted the middle-aged woman, Wen Di, Ba Di heard Jenny's voice. His body trembled before he raised his head to look at Jenny. His eyes seemed to see the shadow of a former lover, filled with tenderness, sorrow, and desolation. Then, as though he realized that the woman before him was not the lover he wished to see, his gaze became one of disappointed ashes.
Meeting his gaze, Jenny felt as if something were clogging her heart, leaving it aching. The emotions revealed in Ba Di's eyes had reached her heart.
That look told far too many stories. Jenny was so stunned that she stared blankly, only recovering when the middle-aged woman, Wen Di, called to her. Her hands trembled as she gave Ba Di the injection.
After Jenny withdrew the syringe and placed it on the tray with subtle thoughts stirring in her heart, she looked at Ba Di in confusion and complication for a while. Then she concealed her feelings and prepared to turn and leave.
"Can you let me hear your voice a little longer?"
Ba Di's voice suddenly rang out, carrying a touch of harshness and mystery in that white space. He spoke in Kryptonian Language, so neither Jenny nor the middle-aged woman, Wen Di, understood what he meant. They only found it mysterious.
Both Jenny and the middle-aged woman, Wen Di, were shocked. They stared at him blankly.
It was obvious that he had said it to Jenny, and it pierced deeply into her heart.
Wen Di, on the other hand, was somewhat delighted—the delight of a researcher discovering something new. This alien could speak after all; their method had simply been wrong.
Then Ba Di's eyes turned sorrowful and disappointed. The message in his gaze seemed to say, You are not her! He lowered his head again with an ashen expression, showing profound disappointment.
Seeing that look in Ba Di's eyes, any normal woman would feel an emotional shock. She would find it somewhat strange and feel awful about Ba Di mistaking her for someone else. There would be a sense of, It is not my fault that I am not her, as well as the thought, Why is this woman not me? Yet at the same time, she would desperately want to know what sort of past this man had, how he could be so deeply devoted and grief-stricken.
Most of the time, women fell for men while learning about their past.
Ba Di was using that very method. Its prerequisite was that the woman had to notice and find you attractive.
Ba Di was a Kryptonian, an alien. In this Underground Base, that alone made him the greatest attraction. His exceptional appearance and the emotions he displayed made it even easier for him to draw women's attention and win them over. That was why he used this method.
If it did not produce the desired effect, Ba Di would abandon it. He would then find an excuse that would not arouse their suspicions, learn English in front of them, and afterward help them answer questions about the alien spacecraft's technology in exchange for a little more freedom and autonomy.
As long as they wanted technology, he had room to scheme.
As long as they had not noticed that he could grow stronger through sunlight, every plan still had a chance.
Ba Di thought coldly and calmly to himself.
With only a small amount of information, Ba Di could infer a person and scheme to exploit them to the utmost. It was his specialty.
Ba Di's scheme began to succeed when Doctor Jenny left the room looking somewhat dazed and received an order from the old man, Dean Bo Li.
"Jenny, starting tomorrow, you will teach the alien English."
Dean Bo Li looked at Ba Di, who sat with his head lowered behind the glass wall, his eyes thoughtful as he analyzed, "From crashing on Earth to being imprisoned and losing his freedom, he struggled, went mad, and refused to accept it. In the end, his heart turned to ashes. Only when he heard your voice did he react. Jenny, your voice reminded him of someone familiar, which is why he reacted so strongly. Through you, we can learn about his past, as well as the culture and technology of his planet."
Jenny felt somewhat uncomfortable. Were they going to use such a deeply devoted... man?
