History

Duanxie was Daoist Xuanyuan's baleful sword. After Zhou You entered Xuanyuan's Dharma Body, he inherited access to the sword alongside the Sumeru Sword Technique and other Cloudview Sect abilities 98. The system later identified it as an orange-quality weapon capable of assuming a stronger silver-grade true form 105.

After losing Xuanyuan's Dharma Body, Zhou You could still invoke Duanxie's true form through the system as Xuanyuan's successor, though its active duration was less than half an incense stick 127. The sword became his main means of killing demons, ghosts, hostile cultivators, and other malignant entities across later scenarios.

Duanxie was severely damaged during the Evil-Slaying incident. Although Zhou You could still draw on its stored baleful aura, he avoided using the blade directly for fear that it would break completely 389. Shan Qianlin later provided materials intended for its repair 393, and Zhou You eventually tempered it into a flying sword through the Big Dipper Celestial Star Artifact-Tempering Method 491.

Personality

Though physically a sword, Duanxie displays clear will, preferences, and emotions. It communicates through trembling, sword cries, resistance, and an apparent silent bond with Zhou You. When Zhou You left it working as fuel for an alchemical furnace, it refused to return to the Cang Ring until he promised to feed it eight suitably evil targets 276.

Duanxie favors the destruction of evil and reacts strongly to malicious or corrupted beings. Its standards are notably severe: when Zhou You held it to a hostile believer's throat, it judged the man to harbor ill intent and therefore permissible to kill 152. It also appears to recognize people with whom it feels affinity, including Daoist Xuanyuan, Zhengde, and Lu Ping 240.

• Can flood an area with murderous aura to expose hidden structures or hostile presences 257.

Duanxie's presence and baleful aura naturally suppress many yin, ghost, and corruptive effects.
