Ch. 381Charge
Key plot points and events
- Earth’s military joins Klein’s civilian battle group, striking the Twin Stars drones’ flank and quickly destroying the surrounded craft. Earth quietly concentrates more units in the area, gaining a local advantage.
- Klein and Captain Wu turn the gathering force into a counterattack aimed at the wormhole. The move inspires fighters across the battlefield to abandon scattered engagements and rally to them.
- Nearly 3,000 additional Earth Defense Force units—including many volunteers armed largely with cheap missiles—join the advance. The combined force of over 6,000 pushes toward the wormhole while Earth’s fleet and Floating Fortress provide covering fire.
- The closer the force gets, the heavier the Twin Stars resistance becomes. Earth’s troops press on in a near-suicidal charge, determined to carry the fight into the Proxima Centauri System.
- At the wormhole, Twin Stars commander Gustav believes the first wave of 100,000 drone sorties has completed its attrition mission. Before he can assess the battle’s damage, missiles burst out of the wormhole and tear through the waiting drones. A blue mecha follows, ending the chapter on a comic cliffhanger.
Character developments and interactions
- Klein shifts from fighting defensively to leading a bold, shared military-civilian counterattack. His fiery call to charge helps rally the force.
- Captain Wu commands the assault and urges the troops forward, matching Klein’s determination.
- Earth’s fighters and volunteers grow from scattered combatants into a coordinated force, motivated by anger, pride, and the prospect of making history.
- Gustav remains confident in the drone attrition strategy and privately resents its expense, blaming Alsace for the costly assignment. His confidence is abruptly challenged when Earth’s missiles emerge through the wormhole.
- Gustav and his adjutant discuss checking enemy losses, unaware that Earth’s counterattack is already reaching them.
Significant themes
- Defiance and retaliation: Earth’s forces reject passive defense and choose to answer the Twin Stars’ aggression directly.
- Unity through crisis: Rival groups and military units rally around a common goal when the threat becomes clear.
- Sacrifice, glory, and historical memory: Fighters accept the danger partly because they want to be remembered as the first Earthlings to carry the war into enemy territory.
- Underestimation and reversal: Gustav assumes Earth has been broken by attrition; the surprise strike at the wormhole turns his expectations upside down.
