Ch. 161Quinque

Chapter Summary: “Quinque”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Konoha’s leadership meets to discuss Sunagakure’s growing success in the Land of Rivers. Sand’s use of large numbers of scorpions and a new close-combat secret technique has driven Konoha’s forces back and destroyed several strongholds.
  • Hiruzen, Danzo, Koharu, and Homura worry that Konoha’s reputation will suffer if it cannot decisively defeat Sunagakure. However, sending major reinforcements could escalate the conflict into another Shinobi World War.
  • Hiruzen reveals that Konoha has developed its own secret weapon rather than relying on additional troops.
  • He introduces Dr. Fang Zhu, the scientist responsible for the project, and Arima, a one-armed survivor of Yugakure.
  • Fang Zhu and Arima demonstrate weapons made from the tissues and organs of the Ghouls that destroyed Yugakure. These living weapons, named Quinque, transform from briefcases into powerful combat tools:
    • Arima produces a large silver-blue, electricity-wreathed lance.
    • Fang Zhu produces a crimson whip that moves like a living creature.
  • Danzo remains skeptical, insisting that the weapons must be tested in actual combat before Konoha adopts them.
  • The leadership travels to a training ground near the Forest of Death, where Kakashi—still serving in ANBU—is selected as the test opponent. The chapter ends as the practical test is about to begin.

Character Developments

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi: Demonstrates strategic confidence and political awareness. He seeks a decisive victory without provoking a larger war and presents the Quinque as Konoha’s answer to Sunagakure’s new technology.
  • Danzo: Appears suspicious and cautious, both about the circumstances surrounding his injuries and about the Quinque. He recognizes their potential but demands proof through combat.
  • Koharu and Homura: Reflect Konoha’s concern over escalation. They are alarmed by Sand’s advances and initially fear that Hiruzen plans to send more troops.
  • Dr. Fang Zhu: Displays intense ambition and scientific fanaticism. He sees the demonstration as his opportunity to gain official recognition and access to greater resources.
  • Arima: Is driven by a desire to prove his value and obtain more power for revenge. His instincts remain highly alert, especially around Danzo.
  • Kakashi: Is positioned as the skilled and trusted combatant capable of testing the Quinque, though his actual response and performance are left for the next chapter.

Significant Themes

  • Arms development and escalation: Both Konoha and Sunagakure are creating new weapons to gain an advantage, increasing the risk of a broader war.
  • Political reputation: Konoha’s leaders are concerned not merely with winning, but with winning decisively enough to preserve their authority and prestige.
  • Science versus tradition: Konoha turns to biological experimentation and engineered weapons rather than conventional shinobi reinforcements.
  • Power and revenge: Fang Zhu seeks recognition and influence, while Arima seeks strength to pursue personal vengeance.
  • Ethical ambiguity: The Quinque are created from the remains of destructive Ghouls, raising implicit questions about exploiting monstrous organisms for military purposes.

Important Character Interactions

  • Hiruzen, Danzo, Koharu, and Homura debate how to respond to Sunagakure without triggering a new world war.
  • Hiruzen challenges Koharu’s assumption that he plans to send reinforcements and reveals the Quinque project instead.
  • Danzo scrutinizes Arima, causing Arima’s instincts to react defensively.
  • Fang Zhu and Arima jointly demonstrate their weapons before Konoha’s ruling council, each hoping to prove their worth.
  • Danzo’s demand for real-world testing leads directly to Kakashi being chosen as the Quinque’s first opponent.

Ch. 162Arima's Teacher

Chapter Summary: “Arima’s Teacher”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Arima apologizes to Kakashi before asking him to fight seriously. Although Arima’s strength has greatly increased, he knows defeating Kakashi is unlikely and fights desperately to gain the power needed to avenge his people and drive the Ghouls’ enemies from the world.
  • During the demonstration, Arima uses his new [Quinque], a weapon capable of transforming between a massive lance and a shield. He surprises Kakashi by sensing his teleportation and rapidly changing the weapon to defend himself.
  • Kakashi tests Arima with an Earth Style wall, kunai, and explosive tags. Arima’s Quinque destroys the wall and protects him from the explosion, proving its impressive offensive and defensive abilities, though the weapon is visibly weakened by the blast.
  • The observers, especially Danzo, recognize the weapon’s enormous military potential. A second weapon, a flexible whip-type Quinque made from a Rinkaku Kakuhou, is also tested in Fang Zhu’s hands.
  • Fang Zhu explains that each Quinque requires one Ghoul Kakuhou and that users do not need chakra; effectiveness depends on compatibility. Danzo immediately begins considering the mass capture and exploitation of Ghouls to produce weapons.
  • Hiruzen promotes Fang Zhu to Special Jonin in recognition of his contribution to Konoha.
  • Arima expresses his desire to learn ninjutsu so he can combine it with Ghoul weapon technology. Hiruzen appoints Itachi Uchiha as his teacher after Kakashi recommends him.

Character Developments

  • Arima demonstrates major growth in combat skill, tactical awareness, and mastery of the Quinque. His determination is driven by revenge and the hope of protecting the world, while his desire to learn ninjutsu reveals ambition to create a new fighting style.
  • Kakashi continues to care about Arima despite maintaining an emotionally distant manner. He tests Arima seriously but avoids unnecessary harm and ultimately helps him indirectly by recommending a suitable teacher.
  • Fang Zhu gains official recognition and promotion after successfully developing the Quinque project.
  • Danzo becomes increasingly interested in the military and political applications of Quinque. His thoughts reveal a willingness to enslave and breed Ghouls for resources.
  • Hiruzen sees the value of both the Quinque project and Arima’s potential, rewarding Fang Zhu and arranging specialized training for Arima.
  • Itachi is introduced as Arima’s future mentor, establishing an important new relationship.

Significant Themes

  • Weaponization of science and living beings: The Quinque transforms Ghoul organs into weapons, raising ethical concerns about exploitation and mass production.
  • Military power and political ambition: Konoha’s leaders immediately focus on how Quinque could alter the balance of power and equip both shinobi and ordinary people.
  • Innovation and adaptation: Arima’s weapon changes form according to the situation, while his planned combination of Quinque technology and ninjutsu represents a new martial path.
  • Mentorship and hidden care: Kakashi’s restrained concern for Arima contrasts with his unwillingness to openly express affection, while his recommendation of Itachi ensures Arima receives the training he needs.
  • Revenge versus protection: Arima’s personal desire for revenge is connected to a broader goal of defending the world from dangerous enemies.

Character Interactions

  • Arima and Kakashi engage in a serious sparring match that showcases both Arima’s progress and Kakashi’s superior experience.
  • Kakashi’s combat testing allows the observers to evaluate the Quinque’s capabilities.
  • Danzo questions Fang Zhu about production and usage requirements, revealing his practical and morally ruthless approach.
  • Hiruzen publicly rewards Fang Zhu and later speaks with Arima about his wish to learn ninjutsu.
  • Kakashi recommends Itachi as Arima’s teacher, while Hiruzen formally assigns Itachi to train him.

Ch. 163Wood Release

Chapter Summary: “Wood Release”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After completing his test, Arima thanks Kakashi, who reassures him that his future should be easier but recognizes that Arima’s relentless personality will keep him training.
  • Arima explains that he intends to develop ninjutsu, combine it with his Quinque, and continue improving his taijutsu.
  • Kakashi recommends Itachi Uchiha as Arima’s ninjutsu instructor, praising Itachi’s exceptional talent, patience, and willingness to help others.
  • Itachi arrives promptly after receiving the Third Hokage’s orders. Kakashi leaves Arima in his care before departing on a mission—and rushing to buy the latest issue of Make-Out Paradise.
  • Itachi and Arima begin building a relationship over food and conversation. They visit a dessert shop, where Itachi eats tricolor dango and tries coffee after Arima describes its “real” bitterness.
  • Because Itachi has reviewed Arima’s background, he understands the hatred and darkness caused by the destruction of Yugakure. He begins questioning whether such hatred can continue indefinitely.
  • Itachi then takes Arima to the lakeside training ground and formally starts his ninjutsu instruction.
  • Elsewhere in the Land of Rain, Simu completes a sixty-percent analysis of Hashirama Cells. Though imperfect, the result is sufficient to reproduce Wood Release abilities.
  • Simu prepares three bodies:
    1. A modified body for Orochimaru, allowing him to use his Water and Earth Release to produce Wood Release after reincarnation.
    2. A duplicate body for Simu, designed to infiltrate Konoha under the identity of one of Danzo’s test subjects.
    3. An unusually resilient test subject who survived the Hashirama Cell implantation and greatly assisted Simu’s experiments.

Character Developments

  • Arima demonstrates continued discipline and ambition. Despite having made major progress from his formerly spoiled and helpless state, he remains determined to master multiple forms of combat and integrate ninjutsu with his Quinque.
  • Kakashi acts as Arima’s mentor and advocate, recommending Itachi while showing his usual relaxed, eccentric personality.
  • Itachi is introduced as humble, kind, and approachable despite his prodigious talent. His awareness of Arima’s tragic past reveals a thoughtful and morally concerned side.
  • Simu advances his biological experimentation significantly, moving closer to creating reliable Wood Release users and establishing a method to infiltrate Konoha.
  • Orochimaru is positioned to gain Wood Release through reincarnation into the specially prepared body.
  • The unnamed test subject emerges as an important experimental success because of his rare resistance to Hashirama Cell corruption.

Significant Themes

  • Perseverance and self-reinvention: Arima’s rapid growth results from relentless effort, showing his transformation from a privileged noble into a capable fighter.
  • Mentorship and trust: Kakashi’s recommendation and Itachi’s willingness to teach establish a new stage in Arima’s development.
  • Trauma and hatred: Itachi recognizes that Arima’s desire to eradicate “monsters” comes from the destruction of his homeland, while privately questioning whether revenge can ever end.
  • Science, power, and experimentation: Simu’s Hashirama Cell research illustrates the dangerous attempt to reproduce legendary power through biological manipulation.
  • Identity and infiltration: Simu’s creation of a replacement body foreshadows espionage and raises questions about identity, disguise, and hidden threats within Konoha.

Character Interactions

  • Kakashi and Arima: Kakashi offers encouragement and practical guidance, acknowledging Arima’s progress while warning that his personality will not let him rest.
  • Kakashi and Itachi: Kakashi introduces Itachi as Arima’s new instructor and entrusts him with both Arima’s training and protection.
  • Arima and Itachi: Their first meeting is polite and immediately favorable. Their discussion of sweets and coffee subtly reveals their contrasting outlooks—Itachi associates sweetness with happiness, while Arima prefers coffee’s bitterness and realism.
  • Itachi and Arima’s inner conflict: Although Itachi remains outwardly gentle, his knowledge of Arima’s past causes him to reflect on the destructive cycle of hatred.
  • Simu and the experimental bodies: Simu treats the bodies as tools for his larger plans, creating a Wood Release vessel for Orochimaru, an infiltration body for himself, and recognizing the surviving test subject’s unusual value.

Ch. 164Root's Weapon

Chapter Summary: “Root’s Weapon”

1. Key Plot Points and Events

  • After sealing Orochimaru’s body in a scroll, Simu awakens the unnamed Wood Release boy in a crimson-colored facility.
  • The boy has no name and recalls traumatic memories of being raised and experimented on under Danzo and Orochimaru: nutrient tanks, needles, harsh lights, and the deaths of fellow test subjects.
  • Simu explains that the experiments are over and that the boy has successfully obtained Wood Release. He offers him three choices: leave and live independently, return to Konoha and likely become Danzo’s weapon again, or remain with Simu temporarily.
  • Despite being given freedom, the boy chooses to return to Konoha because he has no knowledge of the outside world or any alternative place to go.
  • Simu delivers the scroll containing the completed Wood Release research to Orochimaru. Orochimaru is thrilled that the experiment succeeded, even though the result is weaker than the First Hokage’s legendary abilities.
  • Simu also brings two surviving test subjects, one of whom is the Wood Release boy. He tells Orochimaru they are from Danzo’s side and arranges for them to be returned to Konoha.
  • Orochimaru plans to contact Danzo, expecting him to come personally after hearing that the Wood Release experiment succeeded.
  • While staying overnight at Orochimaru’s base, the two boys discuss their decision to return. They realize that, having been stripped of their identities and raised solely as Root subjects, they have nowhere else to go besides Danzo.

2. Character Developments

  • The Wood Release boy: He begins the chapter confused, traumatized, and unable to define himself beyond being a test subject. Simu’s kindness—particularly placing a hand on his head and reassuring him—gives him his first experience of warmth and human compassion. However, he remains psychologically dependent on the only authority he knows, ultimately choosing to return to Danzo.
  • Simu: He demonstrates both immense scientific ability and unusual compassion. Although he has successfully created a Wood Release user, he does not treat the boy merely as an experiment and gives him genuine freedom of choice.
  • Orochimaru: His excitement reveals how valuable Wood Release is to him and to Konoha’s power structure. Even while impressed by Simu’s abilities, he remains cautious and suspects that the two boys may have hidden complications.
  • The second boy: He is shown to be just as emotionally and socially conditioned as the Wood Release boy. His response—questioning where else they could go—reveals the depth of Root’s indoctrination.

3. Significant Themes

  • The psychological consequences of dehumanization: The boys have been treated as experimental materials rather than people, leaving them without names, identities, or independent desires.
  • Freedom versus conditioning: Although the Wood Release boy is technically free, years of manipulation have made him unable to imagine a life outside Danzo’s control.
  • Compassion as something unfamiliar: Simu’s small gesture of comfort affects the boy deeply because kindness has been entirely absent from his life.
  • Power and exploitation: Wood Release is celebrated as a legendary ability, but the chapter contrasts its political and military value with the suffering required to create it.
  • Identity and choice: The boys are offered choices before they possess the emotional foundation or knowledge necessary to make truly independent decisions.

4. Character Interactions

  • Simu and the Wood Release boy: Simu questions him, comforts him during a painful memory, explains his situation, and offers him freedom. Their interaction is the chapter’s main emotional moment.
  • Simu and Orochimaru: Simu delivers the Wood Release scroll and the surviving test subjects. Orochimaru reacts with excitement and admiration but remains suspicious of Simu’s success and the boys’ true nature.
  • Orochimaru and the two boys: Orochimaru arranges for Danzo to reclaim them and treats their return as a practical matter rather than an emotional one.
  • The two boys: Their nighttime conversation shows that neither has developed a personal identity outside Root. Their shared helplessness reinforces how thoroughly Danzo’s system has shaped them.

Ch. 165Kinoe and B

Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Danzo meets Orochimaru in a valley to receive two successful Wood Release test subjects: Simu and another boy.
  • Root sensory specialists verify that both genuinely possess Wood Release Chakra, exciting Danzo because of Wood Release’s rarity and strategic value.
  • Danzo praises Orochimaru and agrees to provide additional funding, fulfilling their arrangement.
  • He immediately takes the boys to Konoha, intending to train them as elite Root operatives and weapons against Konoha’s enemies—especially the Uchiha Clan.
  • After briefly observing Konoha’s prosperity, Simu and the other boy are brought into Root’s bleak underground headquarters.
  • Danzo begins indoctrinating them, declaring that Root members have no emotions, pasts, or real names and exist only to carry out missions.
  • The boys receive codenames: the other boy becomes Kinoe, while Simu is named B.
  • Danzo assigns the Root operative Ryoma to train Kinoe and B for one month and turn them into full Root members.

Character Developments

  • Danzo displays intense ambition and excitement over obtaining Wood Release users. He sees them as valuable assets for strengthening Konoha’s covert forces and advancing his anti-Uchiha agenda.
  • Orochimaru remains calculating and amused. He successfully delivers the subjects, secures more funding, and appears confident that Simu will cause trouble in Konoha.
  • Simu/B remains calm and observant despite Root’s oppressive atmosphere. He recognizes Danzo’s indoctrination as crude, but deliberately pretends to be obedient to conceal his true thoughts.
  • Kinoe initially feels uneasy in Root but quickly regains his composure and obediently follows Danzo’s commands.
  • Ryoma is introduced as the trainer responsible for shaping the two boys into Root operatives.

Significant Themes

  • Weaponization of human beings: Danzo treats the boys not as individuals but as resources and weapons.
  • Erasure of identity: Root’s philosophy rejects personal names, emotions, and histories in favor of absolute loyalty and usefulness.
  • Manipulation and indoctrination: Danzo immediately begins conditioning the boys, though Simu recognizes and internally mocks the simplistic method.
  • Power and political ambition: Wood Release is valued for its strategic potential, while Danzo intends to use it to increase Konoha’s strength and oppose the Uchiha.
  • Outward prosperity versus hidden darkness: Konoha appears bright, prosperous, and orderly above ground, while Root operates beneath it in a cold, secretive underground world.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo and Orochimaru: Their relationship is transactional. Orochimaru provides experimental results, while Danzo supplies funding and resources. Both remain wary and self-interested.
  • Danzo and the boys: Danzo evaluates them as potential tools, tests their mental resilience, assigns their codenames, and places them under Root’s control.
  • Simu and Kinoe: They share the experience of being taken into Root and respond submissively, though Simu is more internally critical and strategically deceptive.
  • Danzo and Ryoma: Danzo orders Ryoma to train the boys, establishing him as their immediate superior and instructor.

Ch. 166Kinoe's Talent

Chapter Summary: “Kinoe’s Talent”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After receiving Danzo’s approval, Aburame Ryoma begins training the newly recruited Root members, Simu (“B”) and Kinoe.
  • Ryoma introduces himself as their commander. Simu immediately questions why Ryoma is allowed to use his real name when Root members are supposedly forbidden from having names, irritating Ryoma further by mocking his name.
  • Kinoe warns Simu that provoking a Root commander is dangerous, explaining that Root treats its members as tools and punishes weakness or disobedience harshly.
  • Ryoma assigns them a deadly “Dodge Kunai” exercise. They are enclosed in a chamber where hidden mechanisms fire real kunai from every direction.
  • Kinoe realizes they should cooperate, but Ryoma forbids teamwork, insisting that Root shinobi must learn to fight independently.
  • Simu volunteers to go first to protect Kinoe from being placed in danger.
  • Simu effortlessly evades the initial wave of kunai through exceptional awareness, mental control, and precise prediction of their trajectories.
  • When Ryoma increases the kunai density, Simu catches one projectile and uses it to deflect the others, knocking away every kunai that threatens him.
  • Simu emerges completely unharmed and confidently remarks that the exercise is too easy to properly test his talent, leaving Ryoma shocked.

Character Developments

  • Simu: Displays confidence, sharp wit, and a rebellious attitude toward Root’s authority. His extraordinary reflexes, perception, and combat talent reveal that he is far more capable than Root expected.
  • Kinoe: Shows concern for Simu and understands Root’s brutal rules from personal experience. His instinct to cooperate and his attachment to Simu suggest growing loyalty and emotional awareness despite Root’s attempt to suppress such feelings.
  • Aburame Ryoma: Begins as a stern, intimidating instructor but becomes increasingly frustrated and surprised by Simu’s performance. His desire to humble Simu is restrained by Danzo’s expectations and the importance of the Wood Release users.

Significant Themes

  • Root’s dehumanization: Root suppresses names, emotions, individuality, and cooperation, treating shinobi as disposable tools.
  • Individual talent versus institutional control: Simu’s confidence and exceptional abilities challenge Root’s rigid training system and hierarchy.
  • Trust and companionship: Although Root discourages cooperation, Kinoe and Simu instinctively support and protect one another.
  • Hidden potential: The former experiment subjects possess abilities beyond what their handlers understand, especially due to their Wood Release and unusual development.

Character Interactions

  • Simu repeatedly provokes Ryoma with humor, creating immediate tension between them.
  • Kinoe acts as a cautious and supportive companion, warning Simu about the consequences of antagonizing Ryoma.
  • Simu protects Kinoe by volunteering for the dangerous test and refusing to let him face it first.
  • Ryoma attempts to isolate and intimidate the pair, but Simu’s effortless success undermines his authority and forces him to reconsider their true capabilities.

Ch. 167One Who Betrayed His Beliefs and Ideals

Summary

1. Key Plot Points and Events

  • Aburame Ryoma becomes frustrated when the newcomer, Simu—identified within Root as B—easily withstands the training he arranged.
  • Worried that Danzo will consider him incompetent, Ryoma orders the training intensified. More than a hundred kunai are fired simultaneously, aimed at B’s non-vital areas.
  • Rather than endure the attack or attempt ordinary evasion, B brings his hands together and unexpectedly uses Wood Release.
  • Massive trees and roots erupt from the ground, blocking every kunai and destroying the training equipment and surrounding walls.
  • The destruction alarms the entire Root base. Danzo returns and demands an explanation.
  • Before Ryoma can defend himself, B accuses him of violating Root’s principles by using his real name instead of his codename. B argues that this proves Ryoma is insufficiently loyal and even declares that traitors to Root should be killed.
  • Ryoma panics, fearing that Danzo may believe the accusation. Danzo stops B’s speech but acknowledges that Root’s rules must be followed.
  • Danzo orders Ryoma to use his codename, “Poisonous Insect,” from then on. Ryoma obeys and privately regrets having abandoned the practice.

2. Character Developments

  • B/Simu: Demonstrates extraordinary talent, ingenuity, and ruthlessness. He deliberately reveals Wood Release to impress Danzo and secure greater resources, showing that he is ambitious and strategically manipulative. His willingness to publicly attack Ryoma’s loyalty establishes him as dangerous within Root.
  • Aburame Ryoma: Begins as an arrogant senior trying to dominate a newcomer, but quickly becomes frightened when B turns Root’s ideology against him. His dependence on Danzo’s approval and fear of losing Danzo’s trust become clear.
  • Danzo: Maintains authority and control. Though he defends Ryoma’s loyalty, he still enforces Root’s rules, suggesting that even trusted subordinates are not exempt from his ideology.
  • Kinoe and the Root ninja: Are shocked by B’s effortless Wood Release and become wary of him. Kinoe’s surprise also highlights how advanced B is compared with other Wood Release users.

3. Significant Themes

  • Power and ambition: B intentionally displays his ability because talent earns influence, investment, and access to Konoha’s valuable techniques and bloodline abilities.
  • Ideological control: Root demands the abandonment of personal identity, history, and individuality. Even using one’s real name can be treated as evidence of disloyalty.
  • Fear of authority: The Root members fear losing Danzo’s trust more than death itself, illustrating how completely Danzo controls them.
  • Hypocrisy and weaponized loyalty: B uses Root’s own principles as a weapon against Ryoma, revealing how loyalty can be manipulated for personal advancement.
  • The betrayal of ideals: Ryoma’s use of his real name is framed as a betrayal of Root, while the title suggests the deeper irony that Root’s members have sacrificed their original beliefs and identities in service to Danzo.

4. Character Interactions

  • Ryoma attempts to assert dominance over B through increasingly dangerous training, but B turns the situation around by effortlessly defeating the trap.
  • B openly challenges Ryoma before Danzo, accusing him of betraying Root’s ideals and calling for his execution.
  • Danzo intervenes, protecting Ryoma from immediate condemnation while simultaneously reprimanding him and forcing him to resume using his codename.
  • The surrounding Root members shift from viewing B as merely a newcomer to treating him with fear and caution after witnessing both his Wood Release and his ruthless political instincts.

Ch. 168Could He Really Be a Genius?

Chapter Summary: “Could He Really Be a Genius?”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After dealing with Aburame Ryoma, Danzo questions Simu—referred to as B—about how he obtained Wood Release.
  • Simu innocently claims he invented it himself after panicking when kunai were thrown at him. His explanation astonishes both Danzo and Ryoma.
  • Impressed by Simu’s apparent natural talent, Danzo decides to personally train both Simu and Kinoe, removing them from Ryoma’s direct supervision.
  • Danzo brings them to Root’s outdoor training ground, intending to begin their Wood Release training ahead of schedule.
  • He explains that Root agents must develop a broad range of skills, including combat, intelligence gathering, disguise, and knowledge of foreign cultures.
  • Simu humorously argues that intelligence gathering is unnecessary because enemies could simply be knocked out or killed. Danzo attempts to correct his simplistic reasoning and emphasizes the importance of preparation and mission success.
  • To discourage Simu’s overconfidence, Danzo gives him a detailed Wood Release scroll based on techniques developed by Hashirama and refined by Tobirama. Danzo expects the difficult material to humble him.
  • However, Simu’s exceptional analytical abilities allow him to understand the technique almost immediately. After only a minute, he performs Wood Release: Violent Spear Tree.

Character Developments

  • Simu/B: Reveals extraordinary talent and a highly unconventional way of thinking. His innocent demeanor masks an advanced understanding of ninjutsu and near-perfect chakra control. He interprets Danzo’s lessons literally and repeatedly reduces complex strategies to “kill the enemy.”
  • Danzo: Becomes increasingly convinced that Simu may be a genuine genius. He takes personal responsibility for training Simu and Kinoe, partly to cultivate their loyalty and partly to ensure Simu’s talent remains under his control. His attempt to humble Simu fails completely.
  • Kinoe: Continues to behave obediently and accepts Danzo’s demanding training schedule without question. His position as Simu’s fellow trainee is strengthened.
  • Aburame Ryoma: Feels threatened and insecure after Danzo chooses to personally train Simu and Kinoe. He fears Simu’s talent may eventually cause him to lose his status as Danzo’s most trusted and useful subordinate.

Significant Themes

  • Genius versus conventional training: Simu’s intuitive and analytical abilities allow him to bypass the lengthy training process that even experienced ninja require.
  • Talent as power and danger: Simu’s natural ability immediately attracts Danzo’s attention, but it also creates jealousy and anxiety within Root.
  • Control and loyalty: Danzo views personal instruction as a way to shape powerful young ninja and secure their loyalty to Root.
  • The difference between innocence and intelligence: Simu appears naïve and confused, yet his unconventional logic and extraordinary skill reveal that his childish behavior may conceal an exceptional mind.
  • Pragmatism versus theory: Simu focuses only on eliminating enemies, while Danzo insists that successful shinobi must understand infiltration, disguise, culture, and intelligence work.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo interrogates Simu about his Wood Release, while Ryoma reacts skeptically to Simu’s absurdly casual explanation.
  • Danzo informs Ryoma that he will personally train Simu and Kinoe, causing Ryoma silent resentment and fear.
  • Danzo lectures Simu about the importance of intelligence gathering and cultural knowledge, but Simu repeatedly challenges his reasoning with literal, combat-focused arguments.
  • Danzo gives Simu the Wood Release scroll intending to discourage his overconfidence, only for Simu to master the technique almost instantly and surprise him once again.

Ch. 169You Can Do It Too, Kinoe, Right?

Chapter Summary: “You Can Do It Too, Kinoe, Right?”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Simu demonstrates Wood Release: Violent Spear Tree, transforming his arm into a gigantic wooden spear that destroys the training-ground wall.
  • Danzo is shocked by Simu’s ability, especially because Simu claims he learned the technique after studying the scroll for only a minute.
  • Danzo gives Simu a second scroll, Wood Release: Four Pillars House Technique, expecting further testing. Simu immediately creates a flawless wooden house, displaying extraordinary chakra control.
  • Simu dismisses the house just as easily, causing the structure to retract into the ground.
  • Danzo notices that Simu uses only a single hand seal—or effectively just claps his hands—to activate Wood Release. Simu explains that he simply controls his chakra flow correctly.
  • Realizing Simu’s talent is exceptional and potentially dangerous, Danzo decides to slow his progress and eventually establish some form of control or “safety mechanism” over him.
  • Danzo ends Simu’s practice for the day and gives the scrolls to Kinoe, sarcastically implying that Kinoe should be able to master the techniques if Simu can.

Character Developments

  • Simu: Establishes himself as an absurdly gifted Wood Release user. He learns techniques almost instantly, performs them with remarkable precision, requires virtually no hand seals, and remains obedient while clearly understanding Danzo’s intentions.
  • Danzo: Moves from disbelief and irritation to admiration mixed with caution. He recognizes Simu as a powerful asset to Root but also worries that such a weapon could eventually rebel against him.
  • Kinoe: Is left stunned and confused by Simu’s effortless accomplishments. His confidence is implicitly challenged when Danzo compares him to Simu.

Significant Themes

  • Natural genius versus ordinary effort: Simu treats advanced Wood Release techniques as simple, contrasting sharply with Kinoe and Danzo’s expectations.
  • Power and control: Danzo views Simu not merely as a subordinate but as a dangerous weapon that must be controlled.
  • Comparison and pressure: Kinoe is placed under immediate pressure to match Simu’s performance, despite Simu’s extraordinary and seemingly unnatural talent.
  • Humor amid tension: Simu’s innocent explanations and Danzo’s growing frustration create comic relief, particularly when Simu insists that clapping his hands counts as forming a hand seal.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo repeatedly tests Simu by providing increasingly difficult Wood Release scrolls.
  • Simu answers each test effortlessly, leaving both Danzo and Kinoe speechless.
  • Danzo questions Simu about his technique, but Simu’s straightforward answers only make his talent seem more incomprehensible.
  • At the end, Danzo turns his expectations toward Kinoe, teasingly asking whether Kinoe can do what Simu has done and setting up a humorous challenge.

Ch. 170Illusion Drug

Chapter Summary: “Illusion Drug”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Kinoe studies a complex ninjutsu scroll and realizes that, although he can understand it, mastering the technique would take him several hours and require extensive chakra practice.
  • Simu, known as “B,” has already grasped and performed two ninjutsu far more quickly, impressing Danzo.
  • Danzo praises Simu’s talent but deliberately belittles him by emphasizing that he is still inexperienced. He warns Kinoe not to fall behind, calling Root’s members “sharp blades” rather than “trash.”
  • After Danzo leaves, Kinoe congratulates Simu and admits that he hopes to earn Danzo’s approval. Simu rejects the idea that a person’s worth depends on others’ recognition, arguing that everyone creates their own meaning.
  • Simu offers to teach Kinoe Wood Release. Kinoe initially hesitates, worried that acting without Danzo’s permission could cause trouble, but Simu’s persistence eventually leads Kinoe to accept his help.
  • Danzo secretly watches the two form a bond. He views their friendship as a weakness and resolves that such emotional connections must eventually be severed to create perfectly obedient Root operatives.
  • Danzo then summons Kabuto and gives him a letter from Nonō, the orphanage headmistress. Kabuto is deeply comforted by her ordinary words of concern, which provide him with emotional support within Root’s harsh environment.
  • After Kabuto returns the letter, Danzo orders him to create an Illusion Drug to be used alongside Genjutsu and psychological conditioning.
  • Danzo explains that drugs, Genjutsu, and prolonged mental control are necessary to transform people into emotionless weapons. Kabuto recognizes that Danzo likely has a particularly valuable new recruit in mind but obediently accepts the task because of his devotion to Nonō.

Character Developments

  • Simu/B: Demonstrates extraordinary ninjutsu talent, confidence, independence, and emotional resilience. He refuses to measure his value through Danzo’s approval and instinctively encourages Kinoe to think less fearfully and pursue growth.
  • Kinoe: Reveals deep insecurity and a strong desire for Danzo’s recognition. His interaction with Simu begins to challenge his submissive worldview, and he tentatively accepts friendship and instruction despite his fear of authority.
  • Danzo: Is shown manipulating both praise and disappointment to control his subordinates. He regards emotional bonds as defects and actively plans to eliminate them. His interest in conditioning recruits highlights his ruthless vision for Root.
  • Kabuto: Though outwardly obedient, he remains emotionally attached to Nonō. Her letter gives him hope and comfort, while Danzo exploits that attachment by tying Kabuto’s service to his access to her.

Significant Themes

  • Self-worth versus external approval: Kinoe depends on Danzo’s judgment, while Simu insists that personal meaning must come from within.
  • Friendship as both strength and vulnerability: Simu and Kinoe’s developing bond offers mutual support, but Danzo sees it as a weakness that can be exploited or destroyed.
  • Psychological conditioning and dehumanization: Danzo’s use of Genjutsu, drugs, and emotional manipulation reflects Root’s effort to erase individuality and create obedient weapons.
  • Control through emotional attachments: Danzo understands that bonds make people vulnerable, yet he also uses those bonds—especially Kabuto’s love for Nonō—to control them.
  • Contrasting responses to trauma: Kinoe becomes fearful and approval-seeking, whereas Simu remains free-spirited and self-directed despite enduring similar experiences.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo and Kinoe: Danzo’s criticism intensifies Kinoe’s insecurity and motivates him to work harder for approval.
  • Danzo and Simu: Danzo recognizes Simu’s exceptional talent but tries to undermine him through calculated remarks and intends to eliminate his emotional independence.
  • Simu and Kinoe: Their relationship shifts from competition to cooperation. Simu challenges Kinoe’s dependence on authority and offers to teach him Wood Release.
  • Danzo and Kabuto: Danzo manipulates Kabuto by delivering Nonō’s letter before assigning him a morally disturbing medical task.
  • Kabuto and Nonō: Although Nonō does not appear directly, her caring letter demonstrates the emotional bond that sustains Kabuto and gives him a reason to endure Root.

Ch. 171Danzo: Why Can't I Become Hokage?

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Simu and Kinoe train together until nightfall. Simu’s guidance helps Kinoe understand and improve his Wood Release, while Simu’s own powerful technique has already created a massive crater.
  • Kabuto Yakushi arrives with medicinal meals prepared at Danzo’s orders. Simu immediately notices that Kabuto’s smile is artificial, though he praises Kabuto’s cooking.
  • The meals contain a potent illusion drug. Simu eats two portions, while Kinoe consumes one, causing both to fall into a deep sleep.
  • Kabuto reports the plan’s success to Danzo. Danzo intends to use his Sharingan and prolonged Genjutsu to erase the newcomers’ identities and reshape them into loyal Root agents.
  • Danzo enters Simu’s room and uses his Sharingan to invade Simu’s mental world. He attempts to erase Simu’s memories and replace them with Root’s ideology: having no identity or personal attachments, and living only for Danzo and Konoha.
  • Instead of being controlled, Simu reverses or manipulates the Genjutsu. Danzo finds himself stripped of his Sharingan, Hashirama-enhanced arm, aged body, and Root followers, leaving him confused and vulnerable.
  • Danzo is transported into a recreation of the First Shinobi World War, specifically the moment when Tobirama and his disciples were surrounded by the Kinkaku Force.
  • The scene reveals the event that shaped Danzo’s lifelong resentment: Hiruzen volunteers to act as bait, but Tobirama names Hiruzen as the next Hokage and sacrifices himself to save the others.
  • Overwhelmed by jealousy and rage, Danzo cries out that he also wanted to volunteer and demands to know why he cannot become Hokage. His arm then erupts into grotesque tentacles amid a burst of blood.

Character Developments

  • Simu: Demonstrates exceptional insight, confidence, physical endurance, and resistance to psychological manipulation. His ability to recognize Kabuto’s false smile and overcome Danzo’s Genjutsu suggests that his mental strength is even more dangerous than his combat abilities.
  • Kinoe: Continues to benefit from Simu’s mentorship and behaves politely and considerately toward Kabuto. He is still more socially conventional than Simu and remains unaware of the drugged meal and Danzo’s plan.
  • Kabuto: Acts as a calm and efficient Root operative, preparing the illusion drug and medicinal meals. Although Simu’s criticism unsettles him, Kabuto suppresses his irritation and remains focused on the mission.
  • Danzo: His manipulative, authoritarian nature becomes clear as he attempts to erase Simu and Kinoe’s identities. The Genjutsu exposes his deepest insecurity: his lifelong fixation on Hiruzen and his belief that he deserved to become Hokage. His carefully maintained composure collapses when he is forced to relive Tobirama’s succession decision.
  • Hiruzen and Tobirama: Their past relationship is shown through Tobirama’s trust in Hiruzen and Hiruzen’s willingness to sacrifice himself. Tobirama’s decision establishes Hiruzen as his successor and becomes the foundation of Danzo’s resentment.

Significant Themes

  • Identity versus indoctrination: Danzo seeks to erase Simu and Kinoe’s individuality and replace it with Root’s ideology, but Simu’s resistance emphasizes the importance of personal identity and independent thought.
  • Manipulation and hypocrisy: Root presents itself as serving Konoha, yet Danzo’s methods involve drugs, Genjutsu, coercion, and psychological conditioning. His ideals are inseparable from his desire for control.
  • Jealousy and inferiority: Danzo’s hatred of Hiruzen stems from a single moment of hesitation. His failure to act allows Hiruzen to become Hokage, and Danzo spends years interpreting that event as an injustice.
  • Sacrifice and leadership: Tobirama’s final decision portrays leadership as self-sacrifice and trust in the next generation, contrasting sharply with Danzo’s desire to obtain authority through manipulation.
  • The past shaping the present: The Genjutsu forces Danzo to confront the formative memory behind his ambition, showing that his political actions are driven by unresolved fear, regret, and envy.

Important Character Interactions

  • Simu and Kinoe: Simu trains Kinoe and provides the precise advice needed to unlock his Wood Release potential. Their friendship is informal, with Kinoe acting as the more polite and socially aware partner.
  • Simu and Kabuto: Simu bluntly calls Kabuto’s smile fake, unsettling him despite Kabuto’s spy training. Their exchange establishes Simu as unusually perceptive and Kabuto as outwardly composed but internally irritated.
  • Kabuto and Danzo: Kabuto reports that the drugging operation succeeded, while Danzo praises him and personally begins the Genjutsu conditioning.
  • Danzo and Simu: Their attempted master-servant relationship is reversed when Simu resists Danzo’s control and turns Danzo’s own mental manipulation against him.
  • Danzo and Hiruzen: The recreated battlefield reveals Danzo’s envy of Hiruzen. Hiruzen’s willingness to sacrifice himself, followed by Tobirama’s appointment of him as Hokage, becomes the emotional climax of the chapter.
  • Tobirama and his disciples: Tobirama entrusts Konoha’s future to Hiruzen and orders the others to survive, demonstrating the leadership philosophy that Danzo fails to embody.

Ch. 172Danzo's Fantasy Time

Chapter Summary: “Danzo’s Fantasy Time”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Danzo experiences an intense illusion in which he betrays and kills his longtime comrades—including Hiruzen Sarutobi—in pursuit of the Hokage position.
  • His transplanted powers transform him into a monstrous being covered in tentacles, allowing him to overwhelm everyone who challenges him.
  • After killing Hiruzen and securing his rivals’ destruction, Danzo returns to Konoha and falsely claims that Tobirama Senju’s final order named him the Third Hokage.
  • Although villagers and clan leaders initially doubt his story, Danzo convinces them through:
    • Demonstrating powerful Wood Release abilities
    • Displaying overwhelming strength
    • Negotiating political support with Konoha’s major clans
    • Presenting himself as the heir to Tobirama’s Will of Fire
  • Mito Uzumaki formally places the Hokage hat on Danzo’s head, while the villagers celebrate his inauguration.
  • As Hokage, Danzo leads a purge of the Uchiha Clan and later launches the Second Shinobi World War.
  • In the fantasy, his strength enables Konoha to defeat the other four great nations and unify the shinobi world, causing Danzo’s reputation to surpass even Hashirama’s.
  • The fantasy abruptly ends. Danzo awakens in reality and realizes the entire sequence was an illusion caused by backlash from the Sharingan’s Genjutsu.
  • He reflects on the dream’s revelation of his deepest desires, then hides his eye and emotions behind his bandages.
  • After Danzo leaves, Simu reveals that he deliberately invaded Danzo’s inner world through their connection, using Genjutsu to awaken Danzo’s ambitions and fears.

Character Developments

  • Danzo: His deepest ambition is exposed: he wants the Hokage position above friendship, loyalty, and morality. The fantasy reveals his desire to eliminate all rivals, control Konoha, destroy the Uchiha, and impose order on the entire shinobi world. Even after recognizing the illusion, he does not reject these desires; instead, he conceals them and intends to pursue his goals gradually.
  • Hiruzen: In Danzo’s fantasy, Hiruzen represents his most important personal and political rival. Danzo’s willingness to kill him demonstrates how completely ambition has overtaken their friendship.
  • Simu: He is shown to possess significant psychological and Genjutsu abilities. Rather than merely trapping Danzo in an illusion, he deliberately manipulates Danzo’s subconscious and exposes the desires hidden within it.

Significant Themes

  • Ambition versus friendship: Danzo’s dream shows him sacrificing comrades and bonds for political power.
  • The corruption of ideals: Danzo uses Tobirama’s legacy and the Will of Fire as propaganda to justify ruthless actions.
  • Power and legitimacy: His imagined rise depends on both overwhelming strength and political manipulation, suggesting that authority is maintained through a combination of fear, influence, and public narrative.
  • Desire and self-deception: The illusion reflects what Danzo truly wants, even though he initially treats it as merely a Genjutsu backlash.
  • Fantasy versus reality: Danzo’s imagined heroic rise contrasts with his actual hidden, morally compromised position.
  • Psychological manipulation: Simu demonstrates that understanding and awakening a person’s inner desires can be more powerful than directly attacking them.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo clashes with Hiruzen and his other comrades, killing them in the illusion to remove obstacles to his succession.
  • He presents himself to Konoha’s clans and citizens as Tobirama’s chosen successor, using political bargains and propaganda to gain their acceptance.
  • Mito Uzumaki crowns him as Hokage, giving his fantasy official legitimacy.
  • Danzo later suppresses the Uchiha and wages war against the other nations, turning his ambition into global domination.
  • Simu’s unseen interaction with Danzo is the chapter’s true central conflict: by entering Danzo’s mind, he forces Danzo to confront the monstrous scale of his own aspirations.

Ch. 173Gaze in the Dark

Chapter Summary: “Gaze in the Dark”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Danzo examines his body after bathing, revealing a Hashirama-cell prosthetic arm embedded with ten Sharingan, along with an additional Sharingan in his eye. The transplanted eyes help suppress the unstable Hashirama Cells.
  • He reflects on a terrifying illusion or dream in which scarlet tentacles emerged from his body, allowing him to kill Hiruzen and other powerful figures before becoming the new God of Shinobi. Danzo is fascinated by the power and wonders whether the vision was a warning or a possible future.
  • Danzo conceals his Wood Release and Sharingan beneath bandages, fearing that Hiruzen would force him to return the stolen Uchiha eyes if their existence became known.
  • From his balcony, Danzo assesses Konoha’s worsening condition:
    • Orochimaru has defected after his human experiments were exposed.
    • Jiraiya is absent while searching for the Child of Prophecy.
    • Tsunade has abandoned village affairs and is consumed by gambling and debt.
    • Konoha lacks reliable high-level combat power, while Naruto, its Nine-Tails jinchūriki, is still too young to be useful.
    • Tensions between the Uchiha Clan and village leadership are escalating, including clashes between the Military Police and ANBU.
  • Danzo blames Hiruzen’s weakness for Konoha’s instability. He believes that, had he become Hokage after Minato’s death, he would have used the crisis to eliminate the Uchiha threat and prevent Orochimaru’s defection.
  • He identifies Kinoe and especially B as potential future weapons, believing that their Wood Release abilities could become valuable tools against Konoha’s enemies.
  • Meanwhile, Simu secretly deploys countless chakra-less Black Beetles throughout Konoha. The insects function as hidden surveillance devices, allowing him to monitor Danzo, major clans, powerful ninjas, and village politics.
  • Simu is particularly interested in the Uchiha, Hyuga, and Aburame clans and hopes to study their abilities, techniques, relationships, and weaknesses.
  • He also considers provoking conflict in Konoha under the name of the Jashin Cult, both to weaken the village and to gain reputation points.

Character Developments

  • Danzo: Becomes increasingly convinced that he is more capable than Hiruzen and that ruthless action is necessary to preserve Konoha. His obsession with power, secrecy, and controlling potential weapons grows stronger. He views Kinoe and B as future instruments of his ambitions.
  • Hiruzen: Though absent from the chapter’s direct action, he is portrayed through Danzo’s criticism as indecisive, weak, and responsible for Konoha’s political and military decline.
  • Simu: Demonstrates patience, strategic intelligence, and a willingness to operate covertly. Rather than attacking immediately, he builds an extensive intelligence network and evaluates how best to exploit Konoha’s internal divisions.
  • Kinoe and B: Are positioned as important future assets in Danzo’s plans, particularly because of their connection to Wood Release.

Significant Themes

  • Power and ambition: Danzo’s hidden Sharingan, Hashirama Cells, and desire for the Hokage position reflect his belief that strength justifies control.
  • Political instability: Konoha’s weakened leadership, absent heroes, clan tensions, and lack of military strength create an atmosphere on the verge of collapse.
  • Secrecy and surveillance: Both Danzo and Simu rely on concealed resources. Danzo hides his implanted abilities, while Simu uses insects to observe the entire village without detection.
  • Ideological conflict: Danzo believes security requires eliminating perceived threats, especially the Uchiha, while Hiruzen’s restraint appears to him as dangerous weakness.
  • Manipulation and exploitation: Simu plans to turn Konoha’s internal divisions into an opportunity for the Jashin Cult, showing how political turmoil can be weaponized.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo’s relationship with Hiruzen is defined by resentment and ideological opposition. Danzo sees Hiruzen as a weak leader who squandered Konoha’s advantages and prevented him from taking decisive action.
  • Danzo views the Uchiha Clan as both dangerous enemies and the source of the Sharingan he secretly uses.
  • Danzo regards Kinoe and B not as protégés in an emotional sense, but as weapons to be cultivated and deployed.
  • Simu remains physically separate from Danzo but secretly observes him through a beetle hidden near Danzo’s residence.
  • Simu’s intended interactions with the Uchiha, Hyuga, and Aburame clans are currently investigative, though he is already considering future manipulation and conflict.

Ch. 174Danzo, You Are Konoha's True Shadow!

Chapter Summary: “Danzo, You Are Konoha’s True Shadow!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After one month in Root, Simu and Kinoe undergo intensive training and nightly hypnosis by Danzo, enhanced by medicinal meals prepared by Kabuto.
  • Danzo’s repeated Genjutsu gradually reshapes their attitudes:
    • Kinoe develops genuine respect for Danzo.
    • B becomes fanatically devoted, praising Danzo as Konoha’s “true shadow.”
  • Simu openly condemns Hiruzen Sarutobi and suggests assassinating him so Danzo can become Hokage. Danzo does not endorse the idea, warning that such an act would create chaos, though he privately entertains the possibility.
  • Simu demonstrates his rapid mastery of Wood Release:
    • Wood Clone
    • Tree World Wall
    • Giant Wood Technique
    • Silent Killing Binding Technique
    • Great Forest Technique
  • His Great Forest Technique transforms the entire Root training ground into a forest, showcasing tremendous chakra control, battlefield domination, and potential.
  • Danzo is deeply impressed and becomes even more convinced that manipulating Simu through Genjutsu and drugs was worthwhile.
  • Simu pretends to be dissatisfied with his progress, implying he must become stronger before assassinating Hiruzen. Danzo recognizes his dangerous extremism and cuts him off.
  • Pleased by Simu’s apparent loyalty and talent, Danzo gives him a scroll containing the First Hokage’s powerful Wood Human Technique.
  • Simu accepts the scroll enthusiastically, viewing Danzo’s investment as proof that his strategy of displaying loyalty and talent is working.

Character Developments

  • Simu/B: Becomes outwardly fanatical about Danzo while secretly manipulating Danzo for access to techniques, resources, and influence. He deliberately encourages Danzo’s ambition and plans to exploit any future conflict within Konoha.
  • Danzo: His own Genjutsu begins affecting him psychologically. Simu’s praise reinforces Danzo’s belief that he is the true protector of Konoha and deserves the Hokage position. He also grows increasingly invested in Simu as a valuable “weapon.”
  • Kinoe: Gains respect for Danzo but is astonished by Simu’s vastly superior Wood Release progress. Rather than becoming jealous, he remains grateful because Simu’s guidance allowed him to learn two techniques in only a month.
  • Kabuto: Contributes indirectly by preparing the medicinal meals that support Simu and Kinoe’s training.
  • Hiruzen: Remains absent from the scene but becomes the target of Simu’s provocative rhetoric and Danzo’s buried resentment.

Significant Themes

  • Manipulation and indoctrination: Danzo uses Genjutsu, drugs, and Root conditioning to control his subordinates, but Simu turns the same manipulation against Danzo.
  • Ambition and self-deception: Simu’s exaggerated praise causes Danzo to reconsider whether he truly is Konoha’s hidden savior, strengthening his desire to become Hokage.
  • Loyalty versus exploitation: Simu appears devoted to Danzo, but his loyalty is strategic; he uses Danzo’s ambition to secure power and knowledge.
  • Power and talent: Simu’s exceptional Wood Release makes him an invaluable asset, while Danzo views his abilities primarily as tools for Root and possible political advancement.
  • The hidden cost of protecting Konoha: The chapter explores Danzo’s belief that secret, morally questionable actions justify his claim to leadership.

Character Interactions

  • Simu’s dramatic praise flatters Danzo and influences his self-image, while Kinoe observes the spectacle with disbelief.
  • Danzo restrains Simu’s assassination proposal, partly to avoid political disaster and partly because he does not want to waste such a promising subordinate.
  • Simu’s impressive Wood Release display earns Danzo’s admiration and results in the gift of the Wood Human Technique scroll.
  • Danzo and Simu both attempt to manipulate each other: Danzo seeks control over Simu, while Simu intentionally cultivates Danzo’s trust and ambition for personal gain.

Ch. 175Quinque Form Changes

Chapter Summary: “Quinque Form Changes”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • At the Uchiha clan’s lakeside training field, Arima spars with Itachi Uchiha under Kakashi’s recommendation and guardianship.
  • Itachi demonstrates the Uchiha’s exceptional shurikenjutsu, attacking Arima with four shuriken moving along different trajectories and speeds.
  • Arima successfully deflects the attack, showing how much his combat ability has improved after a month of training.
  • Itachi uses chakra threads to control the shuriken and trap Arima from multiple directions.
  • Arima unveils a new Quinque transformation: “Quinque Form Change: Swordsman.” His lance unfolds into a flexible longsword, allowing him to block the shuriken and sever Itachi’s control threads.
  • Itachi counters with Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu. Arima responds with Earth Style: Earth Wall, but Itachi uses the smoke to launch a surprise attack.
  • Arima appears to catch Itachi with the Quinque’s blade at his neck, but Itachi reveals that the entire exchange was an illusion created through his Two-Tomoe Sharingan.
  • Kakashi interrupts and frees Arima from the genjutsu, praising him for forcing Itachi to use the Sharingan.
  • After Kakashi departs to report on a mission, Arima resumes his intense training.

Character Developments

  • Arima has progressed rapidly in physical combat, ninjutsu, and Quinque mastery. He remains dissatisfied with his strength because he is still far from being able to challenge the Jashin Cult responsible for Yugakure’s destruction.
  • He demonstrates tactical growth by adapting to Itachi’s shurikenjutsu and inventing a new Quinque form during battle.
  • Itachi displays his superiority in shurikenjutsu, ninjutsu, combat tactics, and genjutsu. Though impressed by Arima’s progress, he retains confidence in his own abilities and believes Arima has not yet surpassed him.
  • Kakashi continues acting as Arima’s mentor and protector. He understands the danger posed by the Jashin Cult and recognizes that Arima is not yet strong enough to confront them.
  • Arima’s training routine is revealed to include taijutsu, Quinque combat, ninjutsu, and attempts to combine ninjutsu with Quinque attacks.

Significant Themes

  • Growth through discipline: Arima’s rapid improvement comes from relentless, structured training.
  • The gap between ambition and ability: Arima’s desire for revenge exceeds his current strength, emphasizing the danger of confronting powerful enemies prematurely.
  • Adaptation and innovation: Arima survives Itachi’s techniques by changing tactics and developing the Swordsman form.
  • Perception versus reality: The battle’s apparent conclusion is revealed to be genjutsu, reinforcing the importance of awareness and the deceptive nature of ninja combat.
  • Rivalry and mutual respect: Arima and Itachi compete seriously but maintain a friendly relationship built on admiration and challenge.

Character Interactions

  • Arima and Itachi engage in a demanding but respectful spar, with Itachi testing Arima’s defenses and Arima responding with new techniques.
  • Itachi acknowledges Arima’s rapid progress and warns that their next match may require him to fight at full strength.
  • Arima jokingly challenges Itachi not to lose even if he uses all his power, revealing their growing camaraderie.
  • Kakashi evaluates the match, praises Arima, and discusses the reality of the threat posed by the Jashin Cult.
  • Itachi and Kakashi interact cordially, contrasting Itachi’s lack of hostility toward Kakashi with the Uchiha clan’s usual suspicion of an outsider possessing the Sharingan.

Ending Development

Arima has created three Quinque forms:

  1. Knight — focused on thrusting attacks
  2. Swordsman — focused on slashing attacks
  3. Shield Soldier — focused on defense
He can use Earth, Lightning, and Fire chakra natures, but has not yet learned how to integrate ninjutsu into his Quinque techniques.

Ch. 176Making Trouble

Chapter Summary: “Making Trouble”

1. Key Plot Points and Events

  • Itachi interrupts Arima’s training and invites him to eat. Arima chooses three-color dango, recognizing Itachi’s fondness for the sweet.
  • Arima casually bathes naked in a nearby lake after training, embarrassing Itachi and highlighting Arima’s relaxed, unconventional behavior.
  • While eating dango in the village, Itachi reveals that his greatest source of happiness—apart from dango—is his younger brother, Sasuke. He offers to introduce Sasuke to Arima.
  • On their way back to the Uchiha compound, they encounter a crowd protesting outside the Red Spider Lily Merchant Guild.
  • The protesters claim that defective Military Ration Pills sold by the guild failed on the battlefield, contributing to the deaths of their relatives.
  • Itachi investigates through a crow and notices an employee of Arms Hall among the crowd. He suspects the incident may be an act of commercial sabotage by rival merchant guilds whose businesses were threatened by Red Spider Lily’s success.
  • The Uchiha Military Police Force arrives to control the crowd. Uchiha Inabi asks the guild to submit to an official inspection.
  • Duo Mu, the guild’s representative, agrees calmly and readily, contrasting with the guild’s earlier resistance toward the protesters and suggesting that the situation may be more complicated than it appears.

2. Character Developments

  • Arima: Shows his carefree, irreverent personality by ignoring noble etiquette, bathing openly, and teasing Itachi. He also demonstrates consideration by bathing before eating and displays growing familiarity with Itachi.
  • Itachi: Becomes more comfortable around Arima, revealing personal information about Sasuke and showing a softer, affectionate side. He also demonstrates intelligence and suspicion by analyzing the merchant guild conflict and recognizing possible economic motives behind the disturbance.
  • Sasuke: Does not appear directly, but is introduced as Itachi’s beloved younger brother and an important source of his happiness.
  • Uchiha Inabi: Acts as a firm but pragmatic officer, attempting to manage the crowd and seek an objective investigation despite the lack of clear evidence.
  • Duo Mu: Appears composed and cooperative when approached by the authorities, raising questions about the guild’s true position and whether it has nothing to hide—or is carefully managing the situation.

3. Significant Themes

  • Friendship and emotional openness: Arima and Itachi’s growing companionship is shown through teasing, shared meals, and personal confessions.
  • Contrast between status and personality: Arima’s disregard for aristocratic decorum contrasts with Itachi’s awareness of social expectations and reveals how differently they respond to their backgrounds.
  • Family affection: Itachi’s love for Sasuke provides a glimpse of his private emotional life and reinforces the importance of family to him.
  • Commercial rivalry and corruption: The conflict may be driven by established merchant guilds attempting to damage a successful competitor, showing how economic competition can spill into public unrest and endanger lives.
  • Evidence versus accusation: The authorities struggle because the protesters’ claims are emotionally compelling but difficult to prove, emphasizing the challenges of determining responsibility in complex disputes.
  • Public order and political tension: The involvement of the Uchiha Military Police Force shows the clan’s role in maintaining Konoha’s stability while also placing it in a sensitive position between civilians and powerful businesses.

4. Character Interactions

  • Arima teases Itachi about his love of three-color dango and his shyness, while Itachi reacts with restrained embarrassment.
  • Itachi’s willingness to discuss Sasuke strengthens his positive impression of Arima, especially when Arima praises Sasuke as likely being cute.
  • Arima and Itachi jointly observe the merchant guild incident, with Arima providing context and Itachi conducting an investigation through his crow.
  • Uchiha Inabi confronts the protesters and then questions the merchant guild, establishing an official process for resolving the dispute.
  • Duo Mu’s calm cooperation with the Police Force contrasts sharply with his earlier firmness toward the crowd, creating suspicion about the guild’s motives and foreshadowing further investigation.

Ch. 177The Evil Uchiha Clan—Danzo Was Right

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Uchiha Inabi and the Uchiha Police Force investigate accusations that the Red Spider Lily Merchant Guild is selling defective Military Ration Pills.
  • The guild’s representative, Duo Mu, cooperates fully and allows the police to inspect the merchandise. The Uchiha test several pills themselves and discover that they are genuine and beneficial, even easing the strain on Inabi’s eyes.
  • When the accusers claim that only the good pills were tested, Inabi challenges them to inspect every pill and reimburse the guild if no defects are found. Unable to accept the risk, they reveal that their accusations were likely fabricated to damage a rival business.
  • Inabi orders the troublemakers to disperse, but they accuse the Uchiha of colluding with the merchant guild. Insulted by the attack on the clan’s honor, Inabi orders their arrest.
  • Several hidden combatants among the crowd resist with weapons, turning the confrontation into a serious fight. The Uchiha overpower them, though their aggressive response further worsens the clan’s reputation among onlookers.
  • Itachi Uchiha arrives and attempts to calm the situation, suggesting that there may be a misunderstanding. However, one of the protesters insults the entire Uchiha Clan. Inabi attacks him, knocking him unconscious with the hilt of his sword, then orders all the troublemakers arrested.
  • As the police force escorts the prisoners away, Simu—secretly identified as “B”—blocks their path and declares that Danzo was right to call the Uchiha an inherently evil and violent clan.
  • Inabi reacts angrily to Danzo’s name, while Simu becomes enraged that Inabi dismisses Danzo. Simu attacks with Water Style: Water Dragon Bullet, prompting Inabi to counter with Fire Style: Great Fire Dragon.
  • The two techniques collide, creating a dense fog. Inabi activates his Sharingan, detects Simu’s attempted ambush, and launches a counterattack.
  • Confident that his Sharingan Genjutsu will defeat Simu, Inabi looks into his eyes and casts an illusion. Instead, Inabi is pulled into a horrifying mental world filled with darkness, tentacles, blood, decay, and overwhelming despair.
  • The chapter ends when a mysterious, beautiful eye opens within the nightmare, transforming the grotesque vision into a dazzling scene of butterflies, colored light, crystalline trees, and an ocean.

Character Developments

  • Uchiha Inabi: Initially acts as a disciplined investigator, but his pride and anger are repeatedly provoked. He recognizes the accusers’ scheme, yet responds harshly to their insults, reinforcing the very image of Uchiha arrogance and violence that outsiders hold. His confidence in Uchiha superiority and Genjutsu is shaken when his Sharingan illusion is reversed against him.
  • Itachi Uchiha: Demonstrates his instinct toward diplomacy and restraint by trying to prevent the conflict from escalating. However, he is caught between the Uchiha Police Force and the village’s broader political tensions, recognizing that stopping Inabi outright could create even more disorder.
  • Duo Mu: Appears calm, cooperative, and confident in the guild’s integrity. His willingness to submit to inspection contrasts with the Uchiha’s increasingly confrontational behavior.
  • Simu/B: Reveals strong loyalty to Danzo and an aggressive, possibly fanatical attitude toward the Uchiha. He deliberately provokes Inabi, then demonstrates significant combat ability by using powerful Water Release and apparently overpowering Inabi’s Genjutsu.
  • The Uchiha Police Force: Shows strong unity and combat superiority, but its forceful methods deepen public resentment and confirm villagers’ negative stereotypes.

Significant Themes

  • The vicious cycle of prejudice: The Uchiha are treated with suspicion and hostility, respond forcefully, and thereby appear to confirm the accusations against them. Their behavior and the villagers’ resentment continually reinforce one another.
  • Pride and clan honor: The Uchiha regard insults to their clan as personal attacks, making them quick to retaliate. Their obsession with honor repeatedly overrides opportunities for restraint.
  • Law enforcement versus public perception: Even when Inabi is correct about the fraudulent accusations, the Police Force’s methods make them appear tyrannical. Justice is undermined by the way it is enforced.
  • Political manipulation: The conflict suggests that anti-Uchiha sentiment is being deliberately provoked. Danzo’s ideology and the use of staged public unrest appear connected to the broader effort to portray the clan as dangerous.
  • Appearance versus reality: The Uchiha are accused of corruption despite uncovering a false complaint, while the supposed ordinary civilians include trained ninja instigators. The final Genjutsu reversal also undermines the Uchiha’s assumed superiority.
  • The danger of escalation: A commercial inspection grows into a street battle because of insults, wounded pride, and hidden agendas.

Character Interactions

  • Inabi and Duo Mu: Their interaction begins cooperatively, with Duo Mu allowing the inspection and Inabi acknowledging the pills’ legitimacy.
  • Inabi and the accusers: Their exchange becomes hostile after the accusers challenge the inspection and accuse the Uchiha of collusion. Inabi responds by threatening arrest and eventually using force.
  • Inabi and Itachi: Itachi addresses Inabi respectfully and attempts to mediate, but Inabi’s anger prevents a peaceful resolution. Their interaction highlights the contrast between Inabi’s confrontational enforcement style and Itachi’s conciliatory approach.
  • Itachi and the protesters: Itachi tries to de-escalate the situation, but the protesters insult him and the entire clan, provoking Inabi before Itachi can intervene.
  • Inabi and Simu/B: Their encounter is openly antagonistic. Simu invokes Danzo to provoke the Uchiha, then attacks with Water Release. Inabi answers with Fire Release and attempts to defeat him through Sharingan Genjutsu, only to become trapped in a terrifying illusion.
  • The Uchiha and the villagers: The Uchiha easily overpower the resisting ninja, but their brutality leaves the surrounding villagers more fearful and disgusted, worsening the clan’s isolation.

Ch. 178Should I Wipe Out the Uchiha Clan?

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Uchiha Inabi, vice captain of the Konoha Military Police Force, is defeated by Simu, a violent and eccentric Root operative claiming to serve Danzo. Simu uses a mysterious technique that overwhelms Inabi’s Sharingan and traps him in a peaceful, dreamlike illusion.
  • As the Uchiha police arrive to defend Inabi, Itachi intervenes to prevent the situation from escalating. He correctly identifies Simu as a Root subordinate and asks him to release Inabi.
  • Simu refuses, insisting that anyone who insults Danzo deserves to die. His disrespect toward the Uchiha and his willingness to kill Inabi inflame the clan members.
  • Danzo arrives with Root ninjas and orders Simu to leave. Simu obeys immediately, revealing that despite his arrogance and brutality, he is absolutely loyal to Danzo.
  • Itachi demands that Danzo explain why his subordinate attacked the Uchiha Police Force. Danzo offers a restrained apology, claims the incident was due to his failure to control Simu, and leaves after confirming that Inabi is unharmed.
  • The Uchiha members interpret the attack as further evidence that Konoha’s leadership is targeting their clan. Their anger grows, with some beginning to suggest rebellion or exterminating Root. Itachi suppresses the discussion and tells them to leave the matter to Fugaku.
  • Inabi awakens in the infirmary and explains that he used his Three-Tomoe Sharingan to cast a Genjutsu on Simu, only to fall into a beautiful dream himself. The Uchiha speculate that Danzo has developed a method specifically designed to counter the Sharingan.
  • Inabi insists that the incident be reported not only to Fugaku but also to the entire clan council, believing the elders will respond more aggressively.
  • Back at Root, Aburame Ryoma confronts Simu over the trouble he caused. Simu nearly kills Ryoma with Mokuton-like tree roots until Danzo orders him to stop.
  • Danzo questions Simu and discovers that Simu attacked the Uchiha partly because he wanted to test their strength and determine whether he could wipe out the clan for Danzo. Simu casually claims the Uchiha are only “so-so” and offers to massacre them that very night.
  • Alarmed by Simu’s apparent seriousness, Danzo forbids him from acting and confines him to three days of punishment. Simu is also ordered not to clash with anyone without Danzo’s permission.

Character Developments

  • Itachi: Demonstrates calm authority and loyalty to both the Uchiha Clan and the village. He protects Inabi, confronts Danzo directly, and prevents the Uchiha from responding violently, reinforcing his role as a mediator.
  • Danzo: Appears politically cautious. He takes responsibility publicly to prevent the conflict from worsening, but his association with Root and anti-Uchiha views continue to fuel suspicion. He also realizes that Simu is too dangerous and impulsive to operate without supervision.
  • Simu: Is established as immensely powerful, unstable, arrogant, and fanatically loyal to Danzo. His casual willingness to attack both the Uchiha and fellow Root members makes him a dangerous liability, even though he obeys Danzo’s direct orders.
  • Uchiha Inabi: Suffers humiliation but provides crucial information about Simu’s ability to defeat or reverse Sharingan Genjutsu. His anger and insistence on informing the clan elders contribute to rising tensions.
  • Aburame Ryoma: Gains a personal understanding of Simu’s danger after nearly being crushed. His confrontation reveals that even experienced Root operatives are intimidated by Simu.
  • The Uchiha clan members: Become increasingly distrustful of Konoha’s leadership and more receptive to the idea that the clan is being deliberately persecuted.

Significant Themes

  • Escalating mistrust between the Uchiha and Konoha: The attack reinforces the Uchiha’s belief that the village leadership is plotting against them.
  • Loyalty versus obedience: Simu’s extreme devotion to Danzo contrasts with Itachi’s divided loyalty to both the village and his clan.
  • Power and intimidation: Simu’s overwhelming abilities allow him to disregard normal authority, while Danzo must rely on direct orders to restrain him.
  • Political control and suppression: Danzo minimizes the incident rather than addressing the deeper conflict, while Itachi suppresses rebellious talk to prevent open violence.
  • The danger of misunderstanding: A relatively minor insult becomes a near-lethal confrontation, demonstrating how fragile relations have become.
  • Foreshadowing of the Uchiha massacre: Simu’s casual proposal to exterminate the Uchiha and the clan’s growing suspicion strongly hint at future conflict.

Important Character Interactions

  • Itachi and Simu: Itachi attempts diplomacy, but Simu mocks the Uchiha and refuses to release Inabi, revealing the clash between Itachi’s restraint and Simu’s brutality.
  • Itachi and Danzo: Itachi challenges Danzo over Root’s abuse of Uchiha authority, while Danzo studies him as a potentially dangerous Uchiha prodigy.
  • Danzo and Simu: Their relationship combines command and indulgence. Danzo repeatedly restrains Simu but is impressed by his sincere loyalty.
  • Simu and Ryoma: Simu’s near-fatal attack on Ryoma shows that his violence is not limited to enemies; he threatens anyone who questions him.
  • Inabi and the Uchiha police: Inabi’s account of the dreamlike Genjutsu effect turns his defeat into evidence of a possible new anti-Sharingan weapon, intensifying clan paranoia.

Ch. 179I Shadow, You Regret

Summary of “I Shadow, You Regret”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Simu accepts Danzo’s punishment of confinement, which he considers insignificant.
  • Danzo is summoned to meet the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, after Simu’s battle with Uchiha Jonin Inabi causes a major disturbance.
  • Hiruzen reveals that he witnessed the confrontation through his crystal ball and was impressed by Simu’s ability to defeat an Uchiha Jonin in a single exchange.
  • Hiruzen also confronts Danzo about concealing Root operatives Kinoe and B, both of whom possess Wood Release. Danzo’s secrecy confirms that Root has become largely independent of the Hokage’s oversight.
  • Danzo presents Hiruzen with intelligence indicating that some Uchiha members are considering rebellion. Although Fugaku suppressed a coup proposal, he kept the matter within the clan instead of informing the village.
  • Danzo argues that the Uchiha are an unavoidable threat and urges Hiruzen to act before they can fully prepare for revolt.
  • Hiruzen refuses to make an immediate decision, placing his hope in Uchiha allies such as Shisui and Itachi to improve relations between the clan and the village.
  • Frustrated, Danzo warns that delay will lead to civil war. Hiruzen reminds him that he is the Hokage, ending the argument.
  • Danzo leaves angrily, vowing that Hiruzen will regret refusing to act.

Character Developments

  • Danzo: Shown as calculating, secretive, and deeply distrustful of the Uchiha. He views Root as his personal instrument but presents it as a weapon for Konoha. His frustration with Hiruzen’s caution reveals his ambition to become Hokage and his belief that decisive—even ruthless—action is preferable to restraint.
  • Hiruzen: Demonstrates political caution and a desire to preserve balance within the village. Though troubled by the Uchiha threat and impressed by Simu’s talent, he refuses to authorize Danzo’s aggressive approach. His authority is challenged by Danzo’s growing independence.
  • Simu/B: Simu’s victory over Inabi establishes him as an exceptionally powerful and politically significant young ninja. Danzo identifies him as a future Root and Konoha weapon, while Hiruzen begins to recognize him as a dangerous but valuable talent.
  • Fugaku, Shisui, and Itachi: Fugaku appears willing to suppress unrest but keeps the clan’s internal problems secret. Shisui and Itachi are presented as potential bridges between the Uchiha and village leadership.

Significant Themes

  • Security versus political restraint: Danzo prioritizes eliminating potential threats before they mature, while Hiruzen favors patience and negotiation.
  • Secret power and lack of oversight: Danzo’s concealment of Root personnel shows how institutions operating in secrecy can escape the control of legitimate leadership.
  • The Uchiha as a political threat: Suspicion surrounding the clan, intensified by the Nine-Tails Incident, drives the growing conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha.
  • Ambition and authority: Danzo’s resentment at Hiruzen’s position exposes his desire for the Hokage’s power and his belief that he would rule more effectively.
  • Foreshadowing of civil war: The argument strongly suggests that the village’s failure to address the Uchiha conflict may eventually produce open violence.

Character Interactions

  • Danzo and Hiruzen: Their meeting is a confrontation between two former allies with opposing leadership philosophies. Hiruzen reprimands Danzo for exceeding Root’s authority, while Danzo attempts to justify his actions by presenting intelligence on the Uchiha threat.
  • Danzo and Simu: Danzo views Simu as a valuable Root asset and a future weapon for Konoha, though Simu’s actions have also exposed Danzo’s hidden resources.
  • Hiruzen and Simu: Hiruzen has observed Simu’s battle and is impressed by his strength, suggesting that Simu may attract the Hokage’s attention beyond Danzo’s control.
  • Hiruzen and the Uchiha: Hiruzen remains cautiously optimistic that Shisui and Itachi can promote cooperation, contrasting with Danzo’s conviction that the clan must be neutralized before it rebels.

Ch. 180For Lord Danzo, I Can Be the Enemy of the World!

Chapter Summary

Plot points and events

Simu uses his Black Beetles to gather intelligence on Konoha and compare it with Sunagakure. He concludes that Konoha is vastly superior in population, finances, ninja numbers, bloodline abilities, secret techniques, and elite combat power. Konoha’s strength has declined because of the Fourth Hokage’s death, Orochimaru’s defection, and the White Fang’s suicide, but it still remains the strongest village, with Kumogakure beginning to catch up.
Sunagakure is much weaker overall, having lost its Tailed Beast and most of its high-level fighters. However, under Simu’s influence and “Lord Jashin’s blessing,” Kawanishi’s biological armies and new techniques—such as Scorpion Jade, Poison Blade, and Sand Dog—have greatly increased the village’s hidden strength. Rasa intends to keep most of these abilities secret until the right moment.
Simu decides that Konoha must be weakened for Sunagakure to compete. Meanwhile, he becomes hungry while imprisoned in a Root detention room. When a guard refuses to get him food because of Danzo’s orders, Simu uses genjutsu to compel him to buy a large amount of food. The guard later returns to normal but cannot remember what happened.

Character developments

  • Simu demonstrates strategic awareness, analyzing the balance of power between the villages and recognizing that Sunagakure needs to undermine Konoha’s strength. He also remains irreverent and opportunistic, casually using genjutsu to satisfy his hunger. His exaggerated loyalty to Danzo is emphasized through his willingness to become “the enemy of the world” for him.
  • Danzo is portrayed as a powerful manipulator whose brainwashing has created extremely loyal Root operatives.
  • Kawanishi is revealed to be a rapidly developing innovator whose biological creations and secret techniques are transforming Sunagakure’s military potential.
  • Rasa emerges as a cautious strategist, deliberately concealing Sunagakure’s true capabilities.
  • The Root guard illustrates the extreme obedience and conditioning of Danzo’s followers.

Significant themes

  • Power imbalance and national resources: Geography, population, wealth, and political funding strongly determine the military strength of ninja villages.
  • Elite power versus mass forces: Simu observes that a few overwhelmingly powerful ninja can influence a battlefield more than large numbers of ordinary soldiers.
  • Hidden strength and deception: Sunagakure conceals its new weapons, while Simu gathers intelligence through covert means.
  • Manipulation and loyalty: Danzo’s control over Root is contrasted with Simu’s unusual, almost comedic devotion to him.
  • Humor amid danger: Simu’s serious strategic thoughts are undercut by his immediate concern with food and his casual abuse of genjutsu.

Character interactions

Simu compares the abilities of Konoha and Sunagakure while monitoring events through the Black Beetles. He considers Sunagakure’s future with Rasa’s concealed plans and Kawanishi’s innovations. Later, he confronts a Root guard, threatens him, and then uses genjutsu when the guard refuses to disobey Danzo. The guard unknowingly becomes an accomplice to Simu’s escape from hunger, only to forget the encounter afterward.
