Background & History

Founding era

Konoha was founded by Hashirama Senju and Senju Tobirama. To prevent the Senju from becoming a privileged obstacle within the new village, the brothers disbanded their own clan; later descendants, including Tsunade, did not retain the Senju surname. This was presented as a commitment to treating all villagers fairly rather than privileging their kin. 48

In Konoha's eighth year, Tobirama established the Ninja Academy. Its first class had eight students, including Shimura Danzō; five of them became Tobirama's personal disciples. 5

Tobirama also created and later unsealed numerous forbidden techniques intended to counter Uchiha Madara. Shimura Danzō handled these matters for him, laying the foundation for the village's covert operations. 46

Great Ninja War

During the Great Ninja War, Konoha fought four nations at once, with the Land of Lightning and Land of Earth fronts posing the greatest strain on its defenses. 4

A later three-nation phase ended with the Land of Lightning's retreat and a victory for Konoha and Iwagakure. During that campaign, Guo Wang and Ōnoki exhausted their Mangekyō dōjutsu power in a clash between Susanoo and Dust Release. 37

Despite major wartime losses among its covert forces, Konoha retained an unusually deep pool of elite fighters. At a later Jōnin Council, Shikaku Nara noted that fewer than two thousand deployable shinobi remained across multiple fronts, forcing the village to rely heavily on its elites. 149

Nine-Tails disaster and reconstruction

The Nine-Tails' rampage destroyed roughly half of Konoha, including homes, public facilities, training grounds, and shops. The scale of physical reconstruction exceeded the village's available funds. 171

Shimura Danzō was unanimously chosen as the Fifth Hokage by the Konoha jōnin. Villagers received his accession enthusiastically after becoming disillusioned with Sarutobi Hiruzen's thirty-year rule. 173

The disaster also enabled Danzō's administration to replace Konoha's irregular clan-centered layout. Major clans, led by the Uchiha, were relocated into planned districts along the outer barrier, forming a ring around the village. 228

Under the Fifth Hokage, Konoha constructed high-rise apartments, developed a detailed public model of its planned streets, rivers, bridges, walls, and districts, and prioritized housing, education, healthcare, transportation, and recreation in its reconstruction program. 228

Government and Institutions

Military Strength and Doctrine

Konoha was regarded as the shinobi world's strongest force, with multiple inheritable routes to Kage-level power. Other villages identified at least seven or eight such paths within Konoha, compared with more limited or less stable systems elsewhere. 212

The village's two foremost inheritances are the Sharingan and Sage Mode. The Mangekyō Sharingan provides an enormous increase in mental energy and Yin Release-based dōjutsu power, while Sage Mode grants balanced enhancement across a user's abilities. 123

• Kage-level depth — Konoha fielded Guo Wang, Namikaze Minato, Sarutobi Hiruzen, Orochimaru, and Shisui among its highest-level combatants, with Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Uchiha Fugaku also counted among its potential top-tier forces. 149
• Eight Inner Gates assets — A concealed group of taijutsu specialists inherited the Eight Inner Gates after proving their Will of Fire. They were intended to burn out their lives to defeat enemies when Konoha faced critical danger. 46
• Konoha-Style Kenjutsu — This swordsmanship tradition was strongly associated with Root and Anbu personnel. Operatives such as Gui were feared for their mastery of it. 64
• Intelligence operations — Root maintained infiltrators even in highly isolated Kirigakure, including a turned high-ranking official. Aburame Torune was considered one of its most capable infiltrators. 37
• Uchiha military role — The Uchiha clan's Military Police Force remained responsible for much of Konoha's internal security. 444

Education and Development

The Fifth Hokage made education a major part of Konoha's postwar strategy. The Shinobi World Academy accepted students from Konoha, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure, with Uchiha Itachi becoming its leading student and graduation representative at age six. 228

Sage Mode became a major attraction of Konoha's advanced education. The Hokage personally tutored promising students such as Yakushi Kabuto and Inuzuka Hana, while Yugito Nii became the Academy's first Sage Mode user after receiving private instruction. 332

Konoha also began adopting civilian and technological infrastructure. During the Fifth Hokage's administration, the village was laying new power grids and planning to combine ninjutsu with sealing techniques to develop hydroelectric power. 231

External Relations

• Kumogakure — A wartime adversary during Konoha's conflict against four nations, later a partner in the Shinobi World Academy arrangement; Kumogakure was to provide Nintaijutsu instructors. 4 215
• Sunagakure — Participated with Konoha and Kumogakure in a tripartite alliance that pressured Iwagakure to return occupied Land of Wind territory and provide reparations. 215
• Iwagakure — A major wartime opponent and later target of Konoha-backed diplomatic pressure over occupied Sunagakure territory and wartime compensation. 4 215

• Shinobi Council — Under Guo Wang's proposal, the five-village council expanded to accept smaller ninja villages and formed a continent-wide united force. Its Anti-Terror Elite Ninja Force was commanded by Shisui Uchiha and organized into five multinational squads. 317
