Background
Chen Feng was born to a wealthy merchant family and grew up alongside Ai Qinglan, who was three years older than him. Their parents intended them to marry. Though he initially regarded her as an overbearing childhood companion, her letters after she was taken to cultivate drove him to study the Immortal Alliance's teachings; he reached Tongtian within two years simply to decipher the questions and diagrams she sent him. 573
The Immortal Alliance subsequently brought him to the Immortal Academy. He joined Yangshen Pavilion because of a genuine interest in the Path of Living Beings, particularly after his early efforts to understand Ai Qinglan's correspondence had already focused his studies in that direction. He and Ai Qinglan later became engaged. 573
His central academic conviction is that morality can be studied and demonstrated: he seeks scientific proof that being good is better than being bad. This outlook, combined with his application of Divine Dao and social-science research to cultivation, led to ostracism at the Immortal Academy and the perception that he had “gone mad.” 488 573
Appearance
Chen Feng appears roughly Wang Qi's age and presents himself with a composed, mature bearing. When acting as a True Disciple rather than an Enforcement Officer, he dresses formally to receive visitors. 315
- Bears Yangshen Pavilion's Bi'an pattern on his left shoulder. 315
- Wears a white training outfit during body-tempering practice and sparring. 348
- His eyes can shine with white light when employing soul and illusion techniques. 461
Personality
Chen Feng is principled, compassionate, and unusually committed to proving that moral conduct has practical and cultivational value. He considers the happiness of recognizing himself as a good person second only to discovering truth, and he generally follows the law—even when dealing with those who insult him. 488
He is also an attentive mentor and educator. He runs a small school for children from humble families, teaches them stories and modern legal principles, and treats interaction with them as a way to relax. 315 717
Despite his polished manner, Chen Feng is hot-tempered when provoked or when others disrupt his work. He violently confronted Wang Qi over missed research obligations and readily accepted Ran Yingwei's duel after being provoked. 324 386 In sparring and personal matters, he can be sly and intrusive, using illusions to expose an opponent's habits and offering forceful romantic advice based on his own experience. 349 563
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Song Soul Search
Chen Feng's principal Spiritual Power technique condenses extremely fine Magical Power into his hand, enabling him to examine souls and minds.
- Can read souls and thoughts through contact. 320
- Can scatter roughly seven seconds of a same-level opponent's short-term memory with one strike. 320
- Later deploys the technique at range, stunning hostile targets or making weaker opponents forget their immediate actions. 625
- Its effectiveness can be resisted by strong soul-based defenses; Chen Youjia's passive Magical Power defense rebounded against his mental probe. 801
Brilliant True Spirit Divine Eye
A soul-focused eye technique that creates “openings” in another person's soul and implants minute light within it.
- Supports mind-reading, hallucinations, and illusion-based combat. 320 388
- Allows Chen Feng to perceive spiritual and soul-level changes, including Wang Qi's breakthrough state. 325
- Can form a soul-power field that rearranges ambient spiritual energy into a defensive barrier. 325 461
Illusions and Mental Manipulation
Chen Feng combines memory interference, spatial disorientation, suggestion, and hallucinations to control a fight's information flow.
- Blurred Wang Qi's memory and sense of space during a spar. 350
- Used illusions to learn the operating principle behind Wang Qi's belt system. 349
- Trapped Wang Qi in a realistic looping room from which he could not exit. 788
- Defeated Ran Yingwei by reading his mind and inducing hallucinations that caused him to destroy his own mechanical butterflies. 388
Martial Dao Fist Intent
Chen Feng's Martial Dao Fist Intent is a combat suggestion technique combined with psionic power rather than a supernatural manifestation.
- Imposes a predatory, oppressive mental pressure that disrupts an opponent's reactions. 350 351
- Uses implanted suggestion to make opponents unconsciously avoid his attacks, allowing his fists to bypass their defenses. 351
- Can be paired with other soul arts to create layered combinations rather than relying on a single decisive technique. 352
Flame of Life
A Yangshen Pavilion life-force technique that vastly enhances Chen Feng's physical combat capabilities.
- Amplifies his physical strength to the point that Foundation Establishment cultivators can lose track of his movements. 387
- Lets him repeatedly build momentum through acceleration and deliver increasingly powerful punches. 387
- Provides the durability and recovery needed for his close-range, mutually destructive fighting style. 460 482
- Enabled him to overpower Wang Qi in a Foundation Establishment spar without relying on illusions. 482
Divine Dao Methods
Chen Feng possesses an authorized Divine Dao research permit, accounting for his unusual aura and access to Divine Dao techniques. 461
- Uses the Regret illusion, invoking confession and repentance to overwhelm an opponent with the burden of their past choices. 461
- His Divine Dao soul field can directly connect to heaven-and-earth spiritual energy to form defenses. 461
- Participated in research on the Refining Spirit and Transforming Devil Great Law and anti-devil-curse methods. 606 609
Empirical Research
Chen Feng specializes in research on consciousness, behavior, life science, and human morality.
- Studies the relationship among the brain, soul, and thought through the Jade Purity aspect of the Three Purities theory. 365
- Studies the Human Way and the human heart through Great Purity, including the social origins of morality. 365
- Pursues long-term research into acquired will and artificial intelligence. 365
- Can maintain living cells through Spiritual Power during complex experiments. 368
Equipment and Facilities
- Empirical Department — A laboratory built by removing the walls between his courtyard's east and west wings; its separate restricted environments support different research projects. 316
- Spirit-nullified proving environment — An artificially maintained, Earth-like low-spiritual-energy environment that suppresses cultivators' external Magical Power and permits precision mechanical experimentation. 316
- Precision instruments — Includes a scanning tunneling microscopic imager, low-temperature centrifuge, dehydrator, constant-temperature array, and preserved reagents. 316
- Treasure Weapon-grade calculating machine — A high-end calculator gifted to Chen Feng. Though he admits his mathematics is only average, he grants Wang Qi free use of the machine and other laboratory equipment. 319
- Artifact-refining notes — His notes and annotated introductory texts are used in training and research. 338
- Flying-sword delivery array — A fast transport system for fragile experimental reagents and experimental beasts. 353
Relationships
- Wang Qi — Initially recruits Wang Qi for data processing in his Empirical Department; becomes his employer, mentor, frequent sparring partner, and research comrade. Their contract requires mutual sharing of research materials in cooperative fields. 317 320 463
- Ai Qinglan — Childhood companion and fiancée. Chen Feng began cultivating partly to understand her letters, but their relationship later suffered because she persistently treated him as someone to protect rather than an equal. 573 607
- Chen Ruan — Son of Chen Feng and Ai Qinglan. 1385 1765
- Chen Youjia — Old friend, research collaborator, and fellow member of Wang Qi's Data-Based Cultivation Research Group. She is one of the few people Chen Feng believes still understands his goals. 353 573 803
- Bei Feng — Yangshen Pavilion junior who addresses Chen Feng as Senior Brother and assists with laboratory work; they later reunite over plague research. 315 1372
- Zhan Wo Shen — Senior who selected Chen Feng and Ai Qinglan for a secret Dragon Clan-related mission and respects Chen Feng's straightforwardness. 1145
- Ran Yingwei — Rival defeated by Chen Feng after provoking him into an infinite-Magical-Power duel. 386 388
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shenjing Enforcement and Empirical Department
Chen Feng first appears in Shenjing as an Enforcement Officer handling the political fallout from Wang Qi's assault on a Piao Yun Lin Family cultivator. Outside official duties, he runs a school for poor children and an advanced empirical laboratory. 315 316
He recruits Wang Qi for mathematical processing, initially meeting refusal before winning his interest through projects on consciousness and the human heart. Their collaboration gives Wang Qi resources, cultivation guidance, and practical combat training. 317 319 320
Research on Humanity and Divine Dao
Chen Feng develops a theory of Human Dao centered on increasing complexity, negative entropy, and the scientific study of morality. He seeks to use this work to guide human evolution rather than merely describe it. 367 488
His authorized Divine Dao research places him at the center of Shenjing's work against devil curses and refining-spirit methods. During this period, his ideas and imagination drive the wider research team despite its technical limitations. 461 606
Dragon Clan and Nan Clan Mission
Chen Feng and Ai Qinglan are assigned a secret mission connected to Dragon Clan history and the possibility of modern cultivation methods. Though angered by the Immortal Alliance's secrecy, he accepts the responsibility. 1145
During the mission, he studies the Nan Clan's physical techniques, knot-based knowledge systems, ecology, and history. He later helps encourage the Nan Clan to renew their pursuit of knowledge after the destruction of their old society. 1159 1200
Later Research
After being recruited for a classified Myriad Dharma Sect project, Chen Feng receives mathematical support from Su Junyu for work initiated by Wang Qi. 937
At Sky Spirit Ridge, he continues empirical work involving the Transforming Method and possible plague-related research. By then, he worries that his Core Formation Great Perfection cultivation leaves him underqualified for the most demanding operations. 1362 1372
