Dream Awakening Auction, Making Cesar's Acquaintance (Part One)

Most of all, this was thanks to George's attentiveness. He'd realized that Lei Lin was probably secretly protecting Lin Lei while he went to the Magic Beast Mountain Range to vent his frustrations.

In their eyes, even an "outsider" like Lei Lin had gone to such lengths.

As Lin Lei's roommates, even if they weren't strong, could they really do nothing at all?

With that in mind, Yale had mobilized the local forces of the Dawson Chamber of Commerce to gather information on the Baruch Family. In the end, they discovered Slaughter, a treasured blade of great significance to the Baruch Family.

Then Lin Lei returned and heard about the heirloom blade. Without a second thought, he went to Marquis Jeb to discuss buying Slaughter back.

And so, today Lei Lin received word both that Lin Lei was about to break through to the seventh rank and graduate, and that Dream Awakening was going to be auctioned.

"Sigh... It feels like everything's piling up at once. There just isn't enough time."

"But at least before heading into the mountains, I used my bloodline abilities to prepare a substitute 'corpse' for Hogg."

"The 'corpse' still needs some work, but it'll pass as the real thing. After all, a body slowly rots after death..."

"Sigh... Lin Lei, this is still much better than having you see nothing but a pile of ashes!"

As Lei Lin thought, he arranged for Hogg's frozen "corpse" to be sent to Wushan Town, where Hillman could receive and handle it.

Then he settled into a comparatively ordinary routine, shifting his daily activities from spending all his time researching in the lab to a mix of research, cultivation, time with his family, and sleep.

Lin Lei's breakthrough caused a sensation. Lei Lin went to congratulate him, and everyone at Azure Water Paradise was delighted. Lin Lei, however, still hadn't found himself a woman.

Clyde held several more mixers, hoping to set him up with a few actual princesses. He also expressed his wish that Lin Lei be invited to attend.

The Holy See sent Cardinal Lampson to recruit Lin Lei. Of course, his main purpose was to investigate Gilmore's death.

Lei Lin made a few casual inquiries about Gilmore and confirmed that although the Radiant Church had linked Gilmore's death to Paterson, they still hadn't traced it back to Hogg.

After all, compared with Hogg, Paterson was a noble and a prince with far more enemies.

There were plenty of people who might have wanted him dead, and they were still investigating.

Lampson even suspected that Gilmore's death was retaliation by the Dark Alliance.

After all, the Dark Church's earlier plan against Lei Lin had failed completely, and the Radiant Church had even turned the tables and used it to their advantage.

Retaliation would have been perfectly reasonable!

As for Paterson, he was merely an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

Lei Lin didn't comment much on it. He just found Lampson particularly likable.

Then the day of the Dream Awakening auction arrived.

Windsor and Luo Lin dragged Lei Lin along to the auction hall to admire Dream Awakening.

They'd already heard about Alice and Lin Lei.

Windsor, who was good at socializing, immediately offered to introduce Lin Lei to a few girlfriends who were definitely prettier and gentler than Alice, and told him he could take his pick.

She even said that if Lin Lei wasn't interested, she could arrange a mixer with noble ladies for him. Whatever sort of woman he liked, she could find.

A princess, even!

Lei Lin lightly tapped her on the head. "Have I been going too easy on you with your cultivation assignments?"

"You're making such little progress that even Luo Lin has surpassed you, and yet you still have time to play matchmaker?"

Windsor put on a wounded expression. "I just thought Lin Lei was all alone. It'd be nice for him to have someone who knows and understands him to look after him~"

Lei Lin sighed helplessly. "Looks like I'll have to give you and Luo Lin some family responsibilities in addition to your cultivation assignments."

"You can get a taste of scheming and deceit, and how people really are."

"Otherwise, someone will take advantage of you, and you'll still be smiling as you count out the money for them!"

Windsor had clearly been influenced by her family, or by her noble friends. Otherwise, she wouldn't have immediately offered to introduce Lei Lin to women.

"For a genius like Lin Lei, who may one day reach the Saint Realm, his future partner will either be someone he loves himself, or the true heiress of a major—"

Before Lei Lin could finish, Luo Lin blushed and said, "Then are Windsor and I the kind of girls you like, Lei Lin?"

As soon as she said it, she realized she'd been too bold. She burrowed straight into Lei Lin's arms, too embarrassed to speak.

Seeing this, Yale, Reynolds, and the others gave Lei Lin teasing looks.

Lei Lin fondly patted Luo Lin in his arms, then said to her and Windsor, "All right, all right. A friend of mine is here for the auction too."

"Go say hello to her for me."

As he spoke, he gave the two women a look and sent them a voice transmission. "The owner of that box is Delia, one of Lin Lei's classmates."

"She's here to bid on Dream Awakening too."

"She's interested in Lin Lei, and she'd be a good match for him. They should end up together."

"The Magic Crystal Cards I gave you before we came have five million gold coins on them. If anyone else bids on Dream Awakening, help her out!"

"Right. If the auction price for Dream Awakening is below the Blood-Eyed Mane Lion's current record of thirteen million gold coins, raise the bid to fifteen million."

"This piece has sentimental value. It's my good friend's work, after all. It shouldn't be anything less than first place!"

The two women exchanged a glance after hearing Lei Lin's voice transmission, then headed to Delia's box.

Yale asked curiously, "Lei Lin, if she's your friend, why not invite her over so we can meet her?"

Lei Lin shook his head. "She's a woman, and she's rather shy and introverted."

As he spoke, he gave Yale a look and glanced at Lin Lei.

Yale immediately understood what Lei Lin meant: this so-called friend probably had something to do with Lin Lei.

Otherwise, Lei Lin would have called her over himself instead of sending his women to greet her.

Then Lei Lin began using Electromagnetic Induction to scout the auction hall's boxes, searching for another person he'd come to find.

At first, Lei Lin paid little attention when he scanned a particular box.

But after confirming the identity of its occupant, he was so startled that he almost stopped his investigation. He steadied himself and continued probing.

Inside the box, a lazy-looking, handsome man with a hint of wickedness about him scanned the surroundings and muttered, "Strange. Why does something feel off?"

An old man with graying hair beside him asked curiously, "What's wrong, old instructor?"

There was no doubt about it: this was the legendary King of Assassins, Cesar!

Lei Lin had been looking for him when he began his investigation. Even if Cesar noticed, it didn't matter.

Lei Lin was young and could plead that he didn't know any better. He could apologize and use the opportunity to make Cesar's acquaintance, accomplishing his goal in the process.

The reason he wanted to befriend Cesar was that he'd already found the five Barc brothers in the Eighteen Duchies of the Northern Territory.

He'd obtained the Black Tortoise Bloodline samples long ago, but without the Undying Secret Codex, his research wasn't going well.

His progress was nowhere near as good as it was with his research into the Azure Dragon Bloodline and Vermilion Bird Bloodline!
