Background / History
As a child, Kikyo was accustomed to standing out and receiving attention. When she realized she could not surpass everyone in academics, athletics, or appearance, she decided to become the person connected to everyone instead. She cultivated friendships across every social circle, collected confidences, and enjoyed being treated as others’ closest friend. 63
The strain of suppressing her negative feelings eventually culminated in a middle-school incident: she exposed her classmates’ secrets, triggering widespread conflict that led to the entire class being suspended. Horikita attended the same middle school and may know of the incident, which is the foundation of Kikyo’s fear and hostility toward her. 63
At Advanced Nurturing High School, Kikyo resumes her carefully maintained image as Class D’s friendly, helpful “little angel.” Her stated desire to be friends with everyone earns her broad trust, influence, and access to information throughout the grade. 2 60 107

Personality
Public Persona
Kikyo presents herself as gentle, cheerful, and unfailingly considerate. She defuses tension during Class D’s introductions, checks on classmates, and naturally guides group conversations. Her ability to make people comfortable makes her a central figure in the class’s social life. 3 61 97
She is especially committed to appearing supportive of struggling classmates. During Horikita’s study session, she publicly defended the lower-performing students and left in tears after arguing with Horikita, further strengthening her image as a caring friend. 23
True Nature
Behind the persona, Kikyo is highly resentful, competitive, and obsessed with maintaining social approval. She does not view all of her relationships as genuine friendships; rather, she values the influence and attention gained from being at the center of a social network. 24 63
Her hostility toward Horikita is unusually intense because Horikita represents both a possible threat to Kikyo’s secret and a personality type Kikyo cannot tolerate: direct, self-contained, and seemingly unconcerned with social approval. 24 63 103
Kikyo is also perceptive, manipulative, and capable of using vulnerability as a performance. When pressured, she can quickly restore her public composure, redirect suspicion, or play the victim to preserve her standing. 24 106 107
