Ch. 1Initial
Chapter Summary
Plot and events
Suzuki Tsubame awakens on a bus after apparently transmigrating into the world of Classroom of the Elite. He discovers that he has been accepted into Advanced Nurturing High School and is seated beside Horikita Suzune. Nearby, a blond student argues with an older woman over refusing to give up a priority seat. Kushida Kikyo attempts to persuade someone to help the elderly passenger, but the other students ignore her. Tsubame offers his own seat and assists the woman, completing a newly activated system quest.
System and rewards
The system introduces two types of quests: long-term tasks and short-term timed tasks. Tsubame receives several hidden or partially revealed objectives, including helping Horikita overcome her isolation and helping Kushida with the darkness behind her friendly persona. By assisting the elderly woman, he completes the timed quest “Tradition and Virtue,” earning +3 Physique and unlocking his personal status panel. His intelligence is rated 9, while his physique rises from 6 to 9.
Character developments
Tsubame quickly adapts to his transmigration and becomes excited by the possibility of using the system to improve his survival prospects at Advanced Nurturing. Although he possesses some knowledge of the original story, he recognizes that his physical weakness could leave him vulnerable in the school’s increasingly dangerous environment. His first action demonstrates a willingness to intervene and help others, though he remains cynical and mocking in his private thoughts.
Horikita is introduced as aloof, observant, and absorbed in Crime and Punishment. She appears to misinterpret Tsubame’s actions as an attempt to flirt with Kushida. Kushida presents herself as cheerful, considerate, and socially proactive, while the system hints that this kindness conceals deeper psychological problems. The blond student is characterized as arrogant, provocative, and openly selfish.
Character interactions
The blond student clashes with the middle-aged woman and rejects both social pressure and the idea of helping others. Kushida confronts the surrounding passengers’ indifference and appeals for someone to surrender a seat. Tsubame responds by offering his own seat and helping the elderly woman, prompting Kushida to thank him and introduce herself. Horikita notices Tsubame’s attention but remains distant and judgmental. Afterward, Tsubame avoids further conversation with Kushida and moves to the rear bus door.
Significant themes
The chapter establishes themes of transmigration and foreknowledge, self-interest versus social responsibility, and the difference between appearances and hidden motives. The passengers’ reluctance to help reflects widespread apathy, while Tsubame’s action earns a tangible supernatural reward. The system’s tasks also frame personal relationships—particularly with Horikita and Kushida—as challenges requiring genuine, “correct” assistance rather than superficial manipulation.
