"To avoid being noticed. To stay safe." Hoshino Kanade's tone was like he was stating an established fact. "Class D is a gathering place for 'defective products.' Here, being too exceptional could make you a target or get you ostracized; being too inadequate could get you eliminated. You chose what seems like the safest middle ground: avoiding conflict and staying out of the spotlight. A very clever strategy—in an ordinary environment."
He paused and picked up the pencil on the desk, the one that had unsettled her. He tapped it lightly against the tabletop. "But in this school, Class D's 'safety' is an illusion. By staying in the middle, you've kept your information and influence in the middle, too. When a real storm hits, that's what's most easily torn apart."
Matsushita Chiaki felt her throat tighten. The rebuttal on the tip of her tongue wouldn't come out, because every word he'd said was true.
The way Karuizawa's faction had pulled back after their Class Points hit zero, along with the panic and shame she felt now, proved it.
Under his powerful presence and calm analysis, her earlier muddled, vaguely romantic daydreams seemed utterly trivial and unnecessary, brushed away as easily as dust.
She bit her lower lip slightly. The unconscious gesture revealed a rare, endearing vulnerability, but it was quickly replaced by a look of focused thought.
"What are you trying to do?" She forced herself to look up and meet his unfathomably deep eyes, holding on to her last defenses and a flicker of indignation at having her thoughts seen through—an emotion she hadn't even noticed herself. "Use this to threaten me?" Her gaze sharpened, the edge beneath her elegance now fully exposed.
Hoshino Kanade's lips quirked slightly. It wasn't quite a smile; it was more like approval of her blunt struggle.
"Threaten you? No. An invitation. A deal. It's a waste to let your abilities go unused, maintaining this middling disguise."
His tone took on an ineffable note, like a hunter who had finally set his sights on a falcon worth taking the time to tame, carrying an unmistakable sense of control.
Hoshino Kanade's gaze swept over her chest, rising and falling slightly with tension, and the graceful line of her shoulders and neck, as if admiring a prize that would soon be his—one that combined intelligence and beauty.
Matsushita Chiaki froze. Her abilities? What did he mean? Was he talking about her talent for disguising herself and observing others? Or... She instinctively shifted her gaze away from the pencil. Her long, thick lashes cast a small shadow beneath her eyes, concealing her rapidly turning thoughts.
"Your observational skills," Hoshino Kanade said, seeming to understand her confusion. His keen gaze fixed on her. "You can catch subtle changes in people's expressions and movements through a gap in their hair, even in a noisy environment. Your analytical skills: from that 'beyond the syllabus' little classroom trick, you immediately made connections to other things. Most importantly, your ability to disguise yourself. Whether it's disguising your grades or maintaining a delicate social balance between Karuizawa and Hirata, you do it all quite naturally."
Hoshino Kanade listed her qualities one by one, his tone carrying a superior air of scrutiny. "Most people in Class D don't have these abilities. You've simply been using them to protect yourself." His recognition of those qualities was like a key, instantly unlocking a longing Matsushita Chiaki had kept suppressed for a long time—the desire to be truly "seen."
Matsushita Chiaki's heart missed a beat.
Having him dissect and assess her so clearly made her feel exposed, sending a chill down her back. But the understated approval in his words also stirred something strange deep inside her... excitement? It was as if someone powerful enough had finally recognized the value of another side of her, one she had kept hidden, one that others had overlooked—and that she herself hadn't even known existed.
The feeling of being acknowledged by someone "strong" subtly eased some of her embarrassment.
A glimmer, almost too faint to notice, flickered in her azure eyes—a mixture of pride and submission, lending her a singular radiance, as if she had been "lit up."
"So?" Her voice sounded a little steadier now, calm as if she were negotiating. Under pressure, her own elegant, composed charm had begun to gather again.
Hoshino Kanade leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice. It carried a masculine authority that allowed no argument. "Be my eyes, and become my hands."
He paused deliberately, glancing at Matsushita Chiaki's knees, pressed together without her realizing it, and her tightly clenched fingers, as if silently emphasizing the connection between her body language and his words. "I don't need you to give up your safe zone. I just need you to see more and hear more within it. Use your analytical and disguising skills to sift through and organize what's happening beneath the surface in Class D—the conflicts between classmates, the movements of potential factions, hidden ambitions and abilities, and even... the teachers' subtle attitudes—and pass it all to me."
His tone was matter-of-fact, with not a trace of exaggerated command, yet it brimmed with confidence in his control of the situation.
"Being my eyes means helping me 'see.' Being my hands means reaching the places I can't touch directly, and sensing the slightest tremors for me."
"In return," Hoshino Kanade paused, his sharp gaze catching every change in Matsushita Chiaki's expression, as if assessing the worth of a precision tool, "I won't expose your disguise. You can keep safely playing the 'above-average' student. And when the time comes, if I judge it worthwhile, I'll be someone you can rely on for support in Class D's quagmire." He stressed the words with the force of someone offering protection. "I won't interfere with your everyday choices, or ask you to do anything that puts your fundamental safety at risk. I only need information. Clearer information, to ensure... certain situations don't spiral out of control." His gaze flicked almost imperceptibly toward the reading room entrance. The concerns weighing on him were far beyond the ordinary high school student's worries about exams or romance.
Matsushita Chiaki's thoughts churned.
His terms sounded... surprisingly reasonable. He wasn't asking her to go undercover and betray anyone. He was simply asking her to use the things she was already good at in exchange for greater security and... some kind of recognition from someone powerful.
His assessment that she was "worthwhile" fell like a seed into soil long suppressed, yet yearning for recognition.
And the metaphor of "eyes" and "hands" not only gave her clear value as an information gatherer, but also suggested a closer, more active role as an executor. She would no longer be just a passive observer, but an extension of his will, a set of hidden feelers.
It carried more weight—and posed more of a challenge—than simply being a "spy."
From his point of view, this calm, efficient arrangement, where each got what they needed, really did seem more... reassuring than messy feelings or blunt threats. At least the goal was clear, and the boundaries were well-defined.
Matsushita Chiaki unconsciously rubbed the fabric of her uniform skirt between her fingertips, revealing her inner deliberation. Her intensely thoughtful expression gave her an appealing air of intelligence.
But she still had doubts.
"How can I be sure of your abilities? Are you really... a Class D student?"
She hesitated, but still asked the crucial question. Her voice wasn't loud, but it was exceptionally clear; even under immense pressure, she had managed to keep her doubts composed.
The anomaly he and Kiyona had displayed in class still lingered in her mind.
How could someone with such presence and insight be in Class D?
A look of understanding flashed through Hoshino Kanade's eyes. He didn't answer. Instead, he took something out of his pocket.
