Teacher Haihara sat at the dining table for a while, feeling like something was missing.
She went to the refrigerator to grab a can of beer, twisted it open, and began to drink.
After the ice-cold beer poured into her empty stomach, she couldn't tell if the feeling was refreshing or distressing, and Sakaki Chika also arrived at the dining table.
"Eat."
Teacher Haihara said this plainly, then picked up her spoon and began eating her omurice.
Sakaki Chika looked at the omurice on the table, carefully picked up her spoon as well, and while secretly observing Teacher Haihara, who was eating with her head down, said:
"Thank you, Teacher. Then... I'll dig in..."
As she spoke, she scooped up a spoonful of omurice, took a small bite, and the light in her eyes flickered.
She didn't say anything, her face just flushed slightly. After taking another bite and swallowing it properly, she said to Teacher Haihara:
"Th-that... it's delicious."
Teacher Haihara, who was drinking beer while eating, looked up at Sakaki Chika:
"Thanks for the compliment. Stop looking at me and remember to do your homework after you finish eating."
Even though she had moved into her house, she still had to go to school tomorrow.
Sakaki Chika nodded, then lowered her head and ate in silence, though she would occasionally steal glances at Teacher Haihara.
The omurice Teacher Haihara made was delicious. Although she didn't know what ingredients were used, she really liked the sweetness of the sauce.
Teacher seemed to be very good at cooking.
In Sakaki Chika's memories, her mother didn't really know how to cook for her; when she was little, she often ate instant noodles or cold, pre-packaged food.
Perhaps because of that, she never grew very tall.
It seems that getting proper nutrition when you're young is quite important...
Sakaki Chika thought about these random things while eating.
As she picked up another spoonful of rice and put it into her mouth, Sakaki Chika's hand paused, and she sniffled, trying to steady her emotions.
"..."
Teacher Haihara is so gentle...
Intelligent and smart... and her cooking is delicious too.
Before, she had been bold, even brazen enough to call Teacher Haihara "Mom." Originally, she just didn't want to be separated from Teacher Haihara, but now, she couldn't help but let her imagination run wild.
She hadn't eaten omurice many times.
When she was little, meals were often just something to get over with, and after becoming an idol, she only ate nutritional meals.
The few times she had eaten omurice were on television programs. The show would have a segment for home cooking where she was required to make omurice, which she could then eat herself.
She actually had no interest in the omurice she made herself.
And she would have to cut her meals afterward anyway.
Thinking of these things, Sakaki Chika felt sad for some reason.
"Wuu..."
She wiped her tears again, trying her best not to look so pathetic, but she ended up crying anyway.
Teacher Haihara looked over, drinking her beer while watching her.
"Is it really that good?"
Teacher Haihara looked at the sobbing Sakaki Chika, feeling a bit bewildered for a moment.
She didn't know her cooking skills were so high that they could make someone cry.
Chapter 25 Good Night
After tidying up the room that was previously used for storage, a room suitable for sleeping was cleared out. She then took out the quilt and pillow originally prepared for Kiriori and made a simple floor bed, and Sakaki Chika's sleeping place for the night was ready.
Afterward, Teacher Haihara began to prepare her lessons, but shortly after starting, she remembered something and made a call to a certain villainous female executive.
Sha Qina's voice came from the other end of the line:
[Ms. Haihara? Is there something you need at this late hour?]
"I have a student whose family is going through some trouble. Could I trouble you and the Black Death Cult to help resolve it?"
After careful consideration, Teacher Haihara felt that asking the Black Death Cult for help was more reliable, and it was also relatively convenient to pay back the favor.
[Ah? We don't do extortion of minors, that's a bit...]
Sha Qina felt this was a bit of a stretch.
"It's not extortion of a minor. It's a bit complicated to explain, but it's roughly like this..."
Teacher Haihara pressed her temples, thought about how to phrase it, and slowly told Sha Qina about Sakaki Chika's situation.
Sha Qina responded with "Oh, oh" on the other end, seemingly having understood the gist of it.
"So, can you find a mental hospital and lock that man up? Maybe schedule a few electroshock therapy sessions for him every day."
[In that case, no problem, leave it to me! Our Black Death Cult runs plenty of shady operations like that; I'll just find a few monsters to grab him and toss him inside when the time comes.]
It seemed there were no issues; as expected of a villainous organization, while they were incredibly unreliable when fighting magical girls, they were still dependable when it came to things like this.
Teacher Haihara thought for a moment longer:
"Oh right, doesn't your Black Death Cult have that monster group called the Gay Four? Please arrange for them to be involved as well."
[Alright, alright~]
After finishing her request to the villainous executive, Teacher Haihara went back to preparing her lessons, then noticed Sakaki Chika staring blankly into space after finishing her homework.
The little girl didn't seem to have adjusted to living at her house yet.
Perhaps it was because she was a teacher, so she felt too embarrassed to play on her phone?
"Come to think of it, don't you have any lighter pajamas? You're wearing long sleeves even at home?"
Teacher Haihara looked at Sakaki Chika's current attire.
It was the kind of outfit she could wear out without any issues; it was convenient enough, but there was no air conditioning in Sakaki Chika's room, so it might get a bit hot at night during the summer.
"My family... doesn't have the habit of wearing pajamas."
Sakaki Chika blinked.
"Hmm..." Teacher Haihara pinched her chin and thought about it.
Then, she entered Sakaki Chika's room, rummaged around for a while, and quickly found a few sets of pajamas.
These were clothes Kiriori used to wear, but Kiriori had grown too tall to fit into them later on.
"I'll leave the clothes here. If you feel hot in the middle of the night, you can change into them. They've all been washed."
It seemed that a couple of days ago, she had intended to wash a few sets of clothes for Kiriori, but ended up washing the ones from a few years ago as well.
Sakaki Chika walked over curiously and looked at the sizes; they were slightly larger than her, but wearable.
Are the clothes the teacher wears this small?
She looked at Teacher Haihara and made a comparison.
Teacher Haihara was very tall; most of the boys in class probably weren't as tall as her. By Sakaki Chika's personal estimate, she was probably over 1.7 meters?
Sakaki Chika herself hadn't even reached 1.6 meters yet, so these clothes were only slightly larger than her...
"Oh, these are my daughter's old clothes."
Seeing Sakaki Chika's confused expression, Teacher Haihara explained.
Then, Sakaki Chika froze.
"Eh?"
Her originally bright eyes suddenly turned hollow, and her mouth hung open, as if she had fallen into a daze.
Sakaki Chika thought she had misheard.
Once she realized she hadn't misheard, she looked at the clothes in Teacher Haihara's hands again, and an indescribable, gloomy emotion surged within her heart.
Teacher Haihara... already has a daughter?
At first, she felt it was unlikely, given how young Teacher Haihara looked.
But Teacher Haihara could cook, and she was so good at taking care of people...
"Teacher Haihara... are you already married?"
She asked with a hint of bitterness.
Her eyes were slightly red as she looked up at Teacher Haihara, who looked completely bewildered:
"Ah? Married?"
Then she realized this was likely about her having a daughter.
Did she look that much like someone who was already married?
Besides, for someone as gloomy and ordinary as her, no one would have the spare time to want to marry her.
"She's just an adopted daughter. I couldn't handle giving birth."
Teacher Haihara shook her head.
After she finished speaking, Sakaki Chika's eyes blinked, their luster returning to normal, and the messy hair on top of her head even twitched.
For some reason, Teacher Haihara felt that Sakaki Chika suddenly looked very happy.
Sakaki Chika curiously picked up the clothes, held them against her figure to measure, and whispered:
"Then teacher, if I wear your daughter's clothes, won't your daughter... be angry?"
Because the voice was too soft, Teacher Haihara didn't hear it clearly.
"Alright, go to sleep now. I'll wake you up when it's time tomorrow."
In the middle of the night, Teacher Haihara wasn't sleeping, but standing on the small balcony smoking.
She was the type to be more energetic at night than during the day; on a night like this, she didn't want to sleep too early, but she had to go to work first thing in the morning.
Actually, Haihara had once considered whether there were any suitable night shifts, but she eventually gave up on the idea because she had to take care of her daughter.
She looked out at the dim, cold city, watching the scattered stars in the sky as the lights in the distant buildings flickered out one by one, turning into dead silence, while ghost-like vehicles occasionally drove through the streets, heading to who knows where.
At times like this, Haihara felt at ease.
Her two bare arms rested on the railing, her hair disheveled, and she wasn't wearing her glasses.
She flicked the cigarette in her hand, and the ash fell away from the burning end.
She then held the cigarette between her lips, idling away the time, puffing on it slowly.
The dim starlight of the night reflected in her cold eyes.
After a while, she heard footsteps coming from the quiet room.
Turning around, she discovered it was Sakaki Chika.
The young girl was wearing somewhat oversized pajamas, the collar slipping down to her shoulder to reveal a fair, slender neck and shoulder that appeared slightly pale in the dim light.
She had assumed the girl was coming out to use the restroom, but Haihara noticed she was walking toward her instead.
"What's wrong? Can't sleep?"
Haihara pinched the cigarette and then snuffed it out.
Sakaki Chika simply kept her hands behind her back and walked slowly toward Haihara.
Haihara watched her approach with confusion, right up until she reached out her arms to hug her.
The light was very dim, but she could still see a flush on Sakaki Chika's face.
Although she didn't know what was going on, Haihara patted her back for the time being.
"Teacher, good night..."
