Background / History

Haihara was an inconspicuous, gloomy woman who considered herself an ordinary “background character.” She became a high-school literature teacher despite her lack of confidence in her suitability for the profession. In college, she realized she was attracted to women; she later gave up on a senior she liked after discovering the woman was married. 2 29 30 71

While still in university, Haihara adopted Kazama Kiriori after Kiriori's parents died. The two struggled financially while Haihara completed her studies and worked to support them. Haihara had previously known Kiriori's mother through an internship, where the older woman had helped her; Haihara ended her feelings upon learning that she had a family. 29 30

Her life changed after she encountered a Monster Crystal left behind after a magical-girl battle. Touching it flooded her mind with the memories of a silver-gray-haired magical girl far stronger than Silver Feather. Haihara began collecting further crystals, obtaining magic and knowledge while increasingly seeing the previous owner's image in mirrors and hallucinations. 2

Frustrated that the magical girls in her class repeatedly skipped school to fight Monsters, Haihara chose to become a villainous magical girl and cooperate with the Black Death Cult. Her original stated aim was to make the girls return to class, though she later admitted that this was partly an excuse to remain connected to them. 1 8 192 302

Over time, Haihara embraced her present identity rather than treating herself as a replacement for the witch whose memories she possessed. She rejected President Cangyue's attempt to cling to a past self, stating that she would not abandon any part of who she had become. 255

In everyday life, Haihara is a pale, gloomy-looking woman who usually wears glasses and keeps a deliberately inconspicuous presence. Her appearance changes sharply when magic manifests or when she adopts her “Lily” image. 2 192

Despite her self-image as uncaring and ordinary, she repeatedly provides care: adopting Kiriori, protecting Kirishima Hina while removing the Devil King Crystal, restoring damage caused by battles, and comforting Kuroki Yuka when she doubts herself. 29 87 115 256
