Background
Hong Xuanji is Marquis Wuwen, a powerful noble and senior official of the Great Gan Empire. He governs the Marquis’s Mansion through strict ritual and family law, while his position grants him exceptional court privileges, including entering the palace armed and remaining standing before all but the sovereign. 14 50
He raised his legitimate eldest son, Hong Xi, personally in both literature and martial arts, but treated Hong Yi—the son of Meng Bingyun—with distance and harshness. Hong Yi initially doubts that his father even acknowledges him as a son. 14 50
Hong Xuanji was involved in the destruction of Great Zen Temple and gained access to portions of Taishang Dao’s scriptures, including teachings related to space, time, and martial cultivation. 228 268 He later admits that he ordered Meng Bingyun’s death, making his conflict with Hong Yi irreconcilable. 361
As a court official, he prioritizes political stability over reopening old grievances. When Hong Xi seeks to investigate Nanny Zeng’s death and related past events, Hong Xuanji forbids it, arguing that exposing the old history would destabilize the empire and endanger its meritorious officials. 53
Appearance
Hong Xuanji appears as a refined and composed scholar despite possessing overwhelming martial power. He is often dressed in brocade robes and a purple-gold crown. 267 356
- Fair-faced and beardless, with a jade-like complexion. 267
- Appears to be roughly thirty or forty years old. 267
- Well-proportioned and steady, with the bearing of a mature Confucian scholar. 267
- His lowered eyelids reveal a deep violet hue, giving him an oppressive majesty. 112
- His broad, crystalline hands are repeatedly described as holding terrifying power. 360
- Can suppress or conceal his aura so completely that even powerful divine souls struggle to perceive him. 271 360
Personality
Hong Xuanji is controlled, formal, and profoundly self-assured. Even when threatened by sect leaders, assassins, or Hong Yi’s increasingly formidable cultivation, he rarely loses his composure. His courtesy toward figures such as Consort Yuan is rigid and ministerial rather than warm. 39 51
He measures events through power, order, and long-term political consequences. He is willing to suppress truth, sever family bonds, and sacrifice individuals to preserve the court’s stability. His conflict with Hong Yi is therefore not merely personal: Hong Yi’s existence, knowledge, and growing influence threaten the political order Hong Xuanji has built. 53 302 648
His temperament is exceptionally adaptable. During his battle with Yuwen Mu, he cycles through the bearing of a divine king, sage, poet, romantic, and awakened one, demonstrating mastery over multiple states of mind and human nature. 536
Hong Xuanji is also ambitious beyond rank or longevity. He seeks to become a sage, establish a lasting civilizational legacy, and ultimately attain Shattering Vacuum. 630 636 777
