Background

Twenty years before the Sekirei Project, Hiroto Ononaka discovered 108 Sekirei in the ruins of Kamizato Island. Through MBI and the ruins’ advanced technology, he released them into the human world and turned the New Tokyo Imperial Capital into the project’s battlefield. 123 124

The account of their ancient origin links the Sekirei to the Ama-no-Iwabune, vessels that descended from Takama-ga-hara carrying divine artifacts known as Ki-Kon. When all eight Ki-Kon are gathered, they can control every Sekirei and influence the consciousness of ordinary humans. 133

Only rare humans—approximately one in ten thousand—can become Ashikabi. A Sekirei who finds and feathers a compatible Ashikabi gains a lifelong bond with them; the project’s nominal prize is entry into Takama-ga-hara and the granting of one wish. 123 133

Sekirei Project

First Phase

MBI deploys the Sekirei across the Imperial Capital and leaves them to seek Ashikabi. The project encourages rivalry, and some Ashikabi attempt forced feathering rather than mutual bonds. 124 126 139

Second Phase

After most Sekirei have been feathered, Ononaka uses MBI’s military and political control to convert the Imperial Capital into an open battlefield. 139

Third Phase and Final Battle

The third phase centers on competitions for eight Ki-Kon artifacts. Once the artifacts are distributed, the project advances to a final battle on Kamukura Island, where the Punishment Force is empowered with the artifacts’ energy. 145 151 152

Takama-ga-hara appears when the final challenger is recognized. Miyako, the Sekirei Queen, judges whether the challenger and their Ashikabi are worthy of the final prize. 153 154
