Completion of the Overgod Mission
Chainis Plane, Azure Sea, Orchid Ice Island.
Lincoln sat cross-legged with his eyes closed before the Cyan Light Jade Wall, breathing deeply. He had been in Coiling Dragon for ten million years, carving out a reputation in the Supreme Plane. After countless struggles and schemes, he could say that he had no rivals below the level of Grand Perfection. Unfortunately, reaching Grand Perfection was too difficult; the final step felt like a natural chasm, and he had failed to cross it for millions of years. Even more regrettably, he had arrived too late, missing the window to compete for a Sovereign Spark. Otherwise, with his strength, he would have had no trouble refining a Sovereign Spark and looking down upon all living beings.
However, what was about to happen next was, without exaggeration, the most important event of Lincoln's ten million years.
Opening his eyes, an incredibly powerful aura flew toward him from the distance at high speed, causing the surrounding living beings to tremble in fear. Lincoln paid it no mind, taking a pure white iron shard from his Spatial Ring. He rubbed it with his fingertips, reading it carefully once more.
Before long, the aura arrived and stopped before Lincoln. It was identical to him in appearance, save for the hair and eyes, which were pitch black. The two exchanged a glance, and the black-haired Lincoln also took a pair of wings from his Spatial Ring. They looked lifelike, emitting a faint white glow, and as the feathers fluttered, it felt as if they were guiding one toward the correct path.
"It seems these are indeed the Wings of Freedom, capable of helping living beings break free from their cages and make the right choices." Lincoln said, though he did not merge with his Divine Clone. "It was worth mobilizing all my Divine Clones and searching for thousands of years to finally obtain you."
After speaking, he took a deep breath, his expression turning resolute. He took two more items from his Spatial Ring: one was a white staff about a meter long, concave at one end and carved with countless exquisite patterns; the other was a round, transparent bead.
"The Scepter of Fortune, which can scatter a person's luck and plunge them into misfortune, and the Orb of Destiny, which can peer into the fates of others—no matter which one, they are Heaven and Earth Wonders that are impossible to seek out. Yet, compared to the Overgod Mission, they seem far too insignificant." As he spoke, Lincoln placed the three treasures together. In an instant, the three Overgod Tokens combined; the Orb of Destiny and the Wings of Freedom were embedded into the head of the Scepter of Fortune, forming the Scepter of Heavenly Mandate. The Scepter of Heavenly Mandate rose into mid-air and was caught by a gradually emerging, bony, aged, and slender hand. The owner of the hand was dressed in a white robe, their head completely obscured by a hood.
"Is this the Fate Overgod?" Lincoln stared at this figure, who appeared to be an old man, feeling only mystery and antiquity. It seemed as if endless secrets were hidden beneath that white robe.
The gaze of the Fate Overgod fell upon Lincoln. "Since the birth of the universe, this is the sixth Overgod Mission, and the second time I have issued one. Congratulations, Lincoln, you have completed it. According to the mission rules, you may now make one request of me. As long as it is within my power, I will fulfill it for you. What is your request?"
The voice of the Overgod seemed to come from all directions, and simultaneously from the depths of his heart. The lingering echoes were mesmerizing.
Lincoln pursed his lips. He had reviewed the scene of Linley making his wish in the original Coiling Dragon story countless times. If the Overgod could not do it, they would fulfill a different request, so...
"I wish to safely transcend this universe!" Lincoln said in a deep voice.
"I am sorry, I cannot fulfill your request. Please choose another," the Fate Overgod replied calmly.
It was an expected answer; Lincoln was not surprised. This question was out of bounds for the Overgod, but it was worth a try. He did not doubt for a second that the Sovereigns from previous missions had tried many times. A Supreme Artifact was likely the optimal solution, but a Supreme Artifact could not be used by anyone who was not a Sovereign. For him, obtaining one now would be as tasteless as chewing wax, and it would even carry great risks.
Without asking why, Lincoln continued to make his wish. "I wish to become the true Chief Sovereign of this universe, such that no matter how strong those High Sovereigns become, they cannot defeat me."
"I am sorry, I cannot fulfill your request. Please choose another," the Fate Overgod replied, still calm.
It was an expected answer, but this time, Lincoln asked why.
"Excluding external factors like developing techniques, talent, or artifacts, the strengthening of life can only rely on comprehending laws, fusing laws, refining God Sparks, refining Sovereign Sparks, soul mutation, and so on. Sovereigns can also rely on ten consecutive victories on the Plane Battlefield to grow stronger. These are all part of the rules, the destiny of all living beings in heaven and earth, and cannot be changed."
Lincoln was silent for a moment. This explanation was equivalent to saying that the destiny of all living beings was already set. However, he did not delay further and made his next wish. "I wish for all my Divine Clones to become High Sovereigns."
"I am sorry, I cannot fulfill your request. Please choose another," the Fate Overgod replied calmly. After a pause, the Fate Overgod continued to explain, "To become a Sovereign, one must independently become a god and then refine a Sovereign Spark. This is the rule of heaven and earth. The current High Sovereigns have committed no faults and should not be erased; this is also the rule of heaven and earth."
Lincoln took a deep breath. The previous wishes were all attempts—like casting a ballot in a college entrance exam, just in case one succeeded. He continued, "I wish to obtain all the currently unrefined Sovereign Sparks!" This was the wish he valued most and had the highest hopes for!
"There are currently four unrefined Sovereign Sparks: a Mid-level Darkness Sovereign Spark, and Low-Sovereign Sparks for the Thunder, Life, and Fate elements. I can only give you one of them," the Fate Overgod replied calmly.
Lincoln was shocked and overjoyed. He had thought there would only be Low-Sovereign Sparks left, but he had not expected a Mid-level Sovereign Spark, and one he could actually use! If this Mid-level Sovereign Spark had been Life or Fate, he would not have been able to use it. That he could only take one was within his expectations; by analogy to Supreme Artifacts, he did not believe those Sovereigns had never wished for a full set of Supreme Artifacts, yet they only ever received one per mission.
"I choose the Mid-level Darkness Sovereign Spark!" Lincoln said firmly.
As soon as he finished speaking, the Fate Overgod extended his other hand. A gray, translucent, glass-like crystal resembling a God Spark appeared in his palm. It radiated black brilliance and contained an awe-inspiring power. The Fate Overgod flicked his finger forward, and the Mid-level Darkness Sovereign Spark flew directly into Lincoln's hand.
Lincoln's Darkness Divine Clone had not been retracted. At this moment, he did not care that the figure of the Fate Overgod had vanished, and immediately dripped a drop of blood onto the Sovereign Spark. Instantly, the Sovereign Spark hovered in the air, erupting with profound and alluring black light. In a flash, rich black elements flooded the entire space. A massive amount of Dark Sovereign Power appeared out of thin air from the elemental ocean, turning into streams that circled Lincoln. As these streams gradually faded, the Dark Sovereign Spark slowly sank into the center of Lincoln's brow, and his other Divine Clones and his Original Body entered his Soul Space.
