Even heavy infantry clad in thick armor and bearing sturdy shields could not escape it; they were vaporized in an instant, leaving only fragments of metal wreckage melted by the searing heat and solidified on the ground.
The blazing white light only flashed intermittently, requiring some time before it shone again after each appearance. The flaming boulders falling from the sky, however, bombarded the battlefield one after another without pause. Worse still, they exploded upon impact, and even soldiers near the center of the blast were hurled away by the shockwaves—if they did not die, their tendons snapped and bones shattered.
If the light from the magic crystal cannons was lightning, and the firestones from the catapults were thunder, then the heavy ballistae were hail. Their powerful bolts could pierce steel shields, and when they exploded, poisonous blade fragments sprayed in every direction, inflicting even denser casualties.
Amid the lightning, thunder, and hail came countless volleys of arrows and bullets, swiftly harvesting the lives of the human allied army.
After the long-range assault, ranks of heavily armored cavalry appeared on the horizon. Though the terrain was not entirely flat, the beasts ridden by the Devil Race cavalry were no ordinary horses, but savage creatures resembling wolves and tigers. They crossed the somewhat rugged ground as though walking on level earth. Both rider and mount were covered in fine, sturdy armor. Their black armor and black scimitars, all in the same tone, created a sight that made one shudder. Trampling the trembling ground, they surged forward like a rolling black flood.
