Yao Chen was once the continent's foremost alchemist, a Ninth-grade Alchemist, and the Master of Starfall Pavilion. Before his death, he stood at the peak of the Dou Venerate realm and possessed Heaven-tier Great Perfection Soul Power 102 129.

His fall is linked to pill refinement and the betrayal of his disciple Han Feng. Yao Chen later describes dying after failing to refine a Ninth-grade medicinal pill beyond his level, while Han Feng is identified as the disciple who betrayed and killed him during pill refinement 82 102. He survived as a Soul Body and resided within a ring, initially relying on Xiao Yan while waiting for a chance to regain a physical body 9 64.

Ye Changge exposes Yao Chen's presence inside Xiao Yan and offers him the means to revive himself, find Heavenly Flames, and avenge himself on Han Feng. After Ye Bai crushes Yao Chen's attempted soul attack, Yao Chen accepts the arrangement and helps Xiao Yan resume cultivation 9.

Despite this arrogance, he is protective toward his disciples. He supervises Xiao Yan's brutal training, nourishes his injured meridians after he collapses, and repeatedly acts to secure Ye Changge's safety and growth 64 102 163.
