Background

Hugh is one of Richard Williams's few friends at Greenwood School. His father works as a post-office dispatcher, while his mother teaches at a middle school; like Richard, Hugh comes from a household for whom Greenwood's tuition is a serious expense. 3

During the God-Descending Disk incident, he is drawn into Warren's group simply because he is nearby. Richard's warning that apparent scams may still conceal something real leaves Hugh at a loss for words, and he follows Richard's caution. 4

Hugh struggles markedly with Latin. When called on to recite Cicero, he stammers and repeatedly gets stuck, while Richard—formerly near the bottom of the class—recites the passage flawlessly. Hugh is initially shocked by Richard's sudden improvement, but responds with admiration rather than resentment. 6
