Mrs. McNeil was the only member of her family to enter the occult profession. Her parents live in the old district of the Imperial Capital; one younger brother serves in the navy, while the other is a primary-school teacher. 157

As a child, she could see an additional layer of reality invisible to others. At age twelve, she repeatedly saw an old woman at a street corner; the apparition vanished after a neighbor's old cat died. After a doctor found nothing physically wrong with her, an old pastor directed her mother to No. 7 Flower Moon Street, beginning her path into mediumship. 157
