Background / History

Mrs. McNeil was the only member of her family to enter the occult profession. Her parents live in the old district of the Imperial Capital; one younger brother serves in the navy, while the other is a primary-school teacher. 157

As a child, she could see an additional layer of reality invisible to others. At age twelve, she repeatedly saw an old woman at a street corner; the apparition vanished after a neighbor's old cat died. After a doctor found nothing physically wrong with her, an old pastor directed her mother to No. 7 Flower Moon Street, beginning her path into mediumship. 157

She trained under Mrs. Mary, eventually completing her training and receiving a bone bracelet containing a fragment of Mrs. Mary's spirit. Her work later expanded from the North District to the Imperial Capital's Central District, leaving her with a consistently heavy fieldwork schedule. 140 164

Around Exorcism Day, Mrs. McNeil was regularly hired by the Crowley family to inspect their home. Following the God-Descending Disk incident, she confirmed that Warren Crowley was untouched, then inferred that Richard had likely neutralized the disk before the séance began. 7

Appearance

Mrs. McNeil appears younger than Richard initially expects, seeming to be under forty. She is slender and professionally dressed for fieldwork. 146

  • Gray wool dress, tightly pulled-back hair, and a conspicuous red mole on her cheekbone during her visit to the Crowley home 7
  • Dark woolen skirt and gray hooded coat during the Whitcombe assignment 146
  • Carries a shoulder bag or leather case containing seal-maintenance tools, tarot cards, and Spirit Vessels 154 155 158

Personality

Mrs. McNeil is composed, practical, and highly observant. She does not overreact to Richard's unusual aptitude, recognizing that excessive intervention can prevent a young practitioner from developing independence. 89

As an instructor, she is direct but patient. She explains both the technical principles and practical restrictions behind seal work, Spirit Sight, tarot, and field etiquette; however, she is strict where safety is concerned, refusing to let a Novice attempt automatic scribing before completing a Signature. 155 164 192

She also has a dry sense of humor. Although addressed as “Mrs.,” she clarifies that the title is professional rather than marital. 147

Abilities & Skills

Mediumship and Spirit Sight

Mrs. McNeil can perceive spirits and Aetheric phenomena, communicate with spirits, and inspect people for attachments.

  • Determined that Warren Crowley had no attached entity by circling him and inspecting his head and shoulders 7
  • Could detect Richard's stable soul state remotely and placed a safeguarding Ritual around him without directly interfering 89
  • Uses Spirit Sight to assess spiritual disturbances and guide investigations 192 193
  • Taught Richard Concealed Spirit Sight, a technique that disperses one's perception rather than visibly fixing it on a target 192

Tarot Divination

Mrs. McNeil is an experienced tarot diviner whose deck has been used by both herself and Mrs. Mary for decades.

  • Uses an inherited tarot deck that Mrs. Mary employed for twenty years before passing it on; Mrs. McNeil has used it for another eighteen years 155
  • Can identify cards by touch and perform an Aether-level shuffle without physically manipulating the deck 155
  • Explains that tarot accuracy grows through accumulated Aether traces and the “unity of person and tool” between practitioner and deck 155
  • Teaches Richard to distinguish personal readings from divinations performed on behalf of a client 192
  • Later begins Richard's formal instruction in tarot divination, including the Major Arcana 187 196

Seal Repair and Ritual Leadership

Mrs. McNeil specializes in maintaining seals and leading field operations involving The Veil.

  • Led the eight-person Whitcombe Mill mission to reinforce the seal and return the entity known as She Who Eats Shadows to slumber 144 158 162
  • Instructed the Novices in clearing cracks, neutralizing residual Aether with local coarse salt, and applying overlapping silver strips as a closed chain inscription 155
  • Organized the evacuation of Whitcombe's villagers before the sealing Ritual 155
  • Planned the mission around visible repairs, hidden-section investigation, and Veil Crossing procedures 154
  • Explained that clean tongues are necessary for accurate spell recitation, prohibiting strongly flavored food before sealing work 154

Seven Spirit Vessels

Mrs. McNeil can invoke seven resident spirits through personal vessels, transforming herself into the central instrument of a sealing Ritual. Fully unleashed, she is described as having the Aetheric presence of a “small lighthouse.” 158

  • The spirits can form and sustain a defensive formation around a True Name Stone 159
  • Their effects include binding targets, surveying the battlefield, weaving paths, negotiating with spirits, accelerating allies, creating auditory deception, and anchoring the team's footing 159
  • Maintaining all seven spirits continuously imposes severe exhaustion on Mrs. McNeil 163
  • The seventh vessel contains a fragment of Mrs. Mary's spirit and serves as an emergency measure capable of holding open a route of survival beneath The Veil for roughly three minutes 164

Exorcism and Spirit Negotiation

Mrs. McNeil favors communication and proper resolution when dealing with harmless or trapped spirits.

  • Used the moonstone pendant spirit, Milke, to communicate with Tommy, a child spirit trapped counting in Holbrook Textile Mill 193
  • Guided Tommy to count to one hundred before leaving, allowing him to release his fixation without force 193
  • Successfully completed the exorcism and collected payment from the mill owner afterward 193

Mentorship and Automatic Scribing

Mrs. McNeil recognizes Richard's potential and develops his practical occult education.

  • Chose not to question Richard about undisclosed Spellcraft during the Whitcombe Ritual, respecting his boundaries while acknowledging his contribution 164
  • Offered to employ Richard as an automatic scribe after he completes his Signature, personally acting as his caretaker 164
  • Explains that scribes enter trances through herbal decoctions and record Spirit Realm transmissions, but face risks including spiritual attention, contamination, hallucinations, headaches, and mental illness 164

Story Role / Major Arcs

God-Descending Disk Incident

Mrs. McNeil investigates the Crowley household after Warren reports the classroom séance. She finds Warren clean but concludes that Richard had likely already emptied the God-Descending Disk, identifying him as either trained or naturally spiritual. 7

Whitcombe Mill Seal Reinforcement

She leads a mixed team of veterans and Novices in repairing Whitcombe Mill's layered seal, evacuating local residents, conducting divination, and crossing The Veil to confront the shadow-devouring “mother.” 154 155 158

During the battle beneath The Veil, she commands the seven resident spirits, sustains the formation protecting the team, and strategically preserves the entity's children as material for Mr. Hutton's judgments. 159 160

After Mr. Hutton identifies the entity's true nature, Mrs. McNeil and her spirits bind it by its true name, Stollithirenna, and return it to its proper resting place. 162

Richard's Occult Training

After the Whitcombe mission, Mrs. McNeil evaluates Richard's performance, offers him future automatic-scribe work, and begins correcting the limits of Old Biggs's instruction. 164 187

She later accompanies Richard to Holbrook Textile Mill, where she teaches Concealed Spirit Sight and helps him resolve the haunting of Tommy through Milke's negotiation. 192 193
