Background and History
Transfer to Class D
Tang Yu arrives at Advanced Nurturing High School as a specially recommended transfer student from Huaxia. He has crossed over into the story’s world, retains knowledge of its original characters, and possesses an Emotion System that rewards him for other people’s emotional reactions 1 2.
Despite placing among the school’s top three entrance-exam candidates, he is assigned to Class D. Chabashira explains that his individualistic conduct and lack of cooperation outweighed his academic performance. He begins building his position through a rivalry with Horikita Suzune and guarded conversations with Ayanokoji Kiyotaka 1.
Academic Rivalry
Tang Yu earns 100 in all six midterm subjects, wins his bet with Horikita, and asks her to study with him daily for a month. His results also attract scrutiny from School Board member Matsuo and deepen Ayanokoji’s suspicions about his abilities 3.
He later develops “one-point suppression”: deliberately finishing one point ahead of Horikita to harvest her frustration. The campaign culminates in Tang Yu receiving perfect final-exam scores while Horikita earns 99 in every subject. Her breakdown forces him to confront the harm caused by treating her vulnerability as a resource 16 18.
Deserted Island Test
Tang Yu helps organize Class D’s strategy, trades a water purification device for Ichinose’s intelligence, and leads the expedition to Central Hill. His decoy diverts Class A, while a bluff about recorded violence forces Ryuen’s team to withdraw. He then memorizes the coordinates on seven hidden-supply cards 4 6 7.
During the storm, he carries the injured Horikita through floodwater to the medical tent and collapses from exhaustion. Their subsequent Emotional Link reveals her loneliness and desire to surpass her brother, strengthening their trust 9.
After discovering a warehouse key with Ichinose, Tang Yu organizes a joint Class D–Class B raid. He later defeats a drug-enhanced Ryuen using temporary Shaolin mastery and plays a recording implicating Kiriyama in the drugs. Class C is disqualified for suspected cheating, and Class D receives the 50-point runner-up reward 11 13 15.
Summer Special Training
Selected for Horikita Manabu’s summer program, Tang Yu joins Horikita and Ayanokoji on a campus power-structure project. Their group receives the highest score, although Manabu criticizes its lack of innovation. Tang Yu also establishes a secret alliance with Karuizawa after protecting her from Class C intimidation 18 22 23.
In the faction simulation, he supports Sato’s leadership while using emotional abilities to strengthen his faction and disrupt its competitors. During the final assessment, he calms trainees confined in a hot room and openly challenges Manabu’s methods. He finishes second behind Ayanokoji and receives a special commendation for improving the group’s performance 24 25 26.
Protecting Karuizawa
Before the new term, Tang Yu purchases an apartment and shelters Karuizawa after Kushida exposes their connection to Ryuen. He discovers tracking software on her phone, lures Ryuen’s hired delinquents into an empty apartment, and records evidence of their orders 29 30 31 33.
Using that evidence, he forces Ryuen to surrender Karuizawa’s photographs and backups. Ryuen later kidnaps her to lure Tang Yu into a gymnasium ambush against roughly thirty opponents. Tang Yu is overwhelmed before Ayanokoji intervenes; his injuries include two cracked ribs 35 37 41 42.
Tsukishiro and the White Room
School Board evaluator Tsukishiro Shuhei probes Tang Yu’s mind and later attacks him remotely. Tang Yu investigates links between Tsukishiro, psychiatric institutions, and mental-control experiments while preparing Class D for the debate tournament 37 38 39.
Class D wins the debate with Ayanokoji secretly countering Tsukishiro’s interference. At a subsequent hearing, Tang Yu and Manabu resist another mental attack until Ayanokoji presents evidence connecting Tsukishiro to the White Room. The principal suspends Tsukishiro pending investigation, but Tang Yu and Karuizawa remain targets for research 44 45.
Tang Yu rescues Karuizawa from a memory-erasure attempt and restores her memories. With information and equipment supplied by Ayanokoji, they locate White Room-Hive7. Tang Yu infiltrates its server room and enters a direct digital confrontation with Tsukishiro’s human-machine core 47 48 49.
Karuizawa’s connection stabilizes Tang Yu as his consciousness begins to disintegrate. Together, they destroy one of Tsukishiro’s nodes. Tang Yu escapes with intelligence about Project Elysium, but an active tracking program leaves him facing renewed White Room pursuit 50.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Black 2.
- Features: Well-defined facial features and a faint, enigmatic smile 2.
- Build: During his Shaolin mastery activation, his muscles are defined without being overdeveloped 15.
- Clothing: Wears the school uniform; for summer training, he purchases a fabric improvement that makes it fit more crisply 21.
Personality
Tang Yu is calculating, competitive, and initially motivated by control. He deliberately provokes pride, jealousy, fear, and surprise to generate Emotion Points, identifying Sudō’s temper and Horikita’s fear of failure as useful targets. His stated ambition extends beyond accumulating points to controlling the school’s power structure 2 3 16.
His tactical restraint does not always reflect his private intentions. Although he tells Sudō that violence will not solve their problems, he simultaneously considers how to exploit Sudō’s fighting ability. He also creates public disturbances, including a drone-store panic, to harvest emotional reactions 11 19.
His relationships gradually challenge that outlook. He recognizes that dependence on manipulation could cost him genuine bonds and moral restraint, and Horikita’s memories make him reconsider treating her solely as a point source. The system’s revelation that emotional power rests on human connection reinforces this shift 17 18 26.
Tang Yu becomes fiercely protective of Karuizawa, offering shelter, safeguarding her personal information, and risking serious injury to rescue her. Even so, his instinct to shoulder danger alone causes friction when she insists on participating in the fight against the Hive 30 37 41 48.
Abilities & Skills
Emotion System
The system converts emotional reactions into points that Tang Yu spends on attributes, abilities, information, goods, and money 1 13 14.
