Background / History
Childhood and Her Brother’s Reputation
Suzune grows up measuring herself against her older brother, Horikita Manabu. Memories accessed by Tang Yu show her studying alone late at night, hearing teachers praise Manabu, and being identified by classmates as his younger sister. She wants both to surpass him and to establish an identity independent of his reputation 9 17 18.
She enters Advanced Nurturing High School hoping to prove that she can succeed without relying on her brother’s name. This goal initially leads her to reject assistance, treating self-reliance as proof of her ability 9.
Academic Rivalry with Tang Yu
When Tang Yu transfers into Class D, Suzune dismisses him as unremarkable because of his placement. Although she correctly solves a difficult calculus problem, she remains unimpressed by his faster alternative solution and insists that sustained results—not one problem—will establish his ability 1.
She accepts his wager that the lower-scoring student on their next exam must grant the winner one request. They subsequently agree to use the Midterm Exam, which Tang Yu wins with perfect scores in all six subjects. His request requires Suzune to study with him for one hour after school each day for a month 1 2 3.
Their first session is confrontational: Tang Yu secretly amplifies her anger and self-doubt before showing her notes built around mind maps, logical connections, and memorization techniques. She agrees to examine his methods without conceding their broader rivalry. Soon afterward, she voluntarily seeks his advice on Class D’s island-test study plan 3 4.
Deserted Island Test
As a member of Class D’s Leadership Group, Suzune takes responsibility for study planning and knowledge-based tasks. In the field, she explains the trade-off between expedition size, mobility, and camp defense, and quickly recognizes Tang Yu’s proposed decoy trap 4 7.
She questions his cooperation with Ichinose’s Class B, warning that another class remains a competitor even during a temporary alliance. Ayanokoji supports her concern that excessive dependence on outside allies could weaken Class D’s internal unity 6 8.
During a storm, Suzune becomes trapped beneath a fallen tree in rising floodwater. Tang Yu carries her back to camp, where she is diagnosed with a broken ankle and mild hypothermia. Afterward, she admits that she refused help because she wanted to prove herself, and thanks him for saving her 8 9.
Suzune continues advising the Leadership Group by video from the school infirmary, then returns to camp on crutches with her right leg still in a cast. She acknowledges the value of accepting help and teamwork, and later praises Tang Yu’s leadership during the test 11 14 15.
“One-Point Suppression”
After the island test, Tang Yu deliberately targets Suzune’s competitiveness by scoring exactly one point above her in every subject. She responds by studying through lunch and remaining in the library until closing, but repeated narrow defeats intensify her anxiety and self-doubt 16 17.
The pressure eventually leaves her crying over torn examination papers. Through Emotional Link, Tang Yu discovers how deeply her need to win is connected to her brother’s reputation. He recognizes the cruelty of exploiting that insecurity, although the final examinations again leave her one point behind him in every subject 17 18.
During a later bookstore meeting, Suzune asks whether his promise to end the pattern was motivated by pity. Their conversation shifts toward self-worth and the emptiness she feels even after winning. She puts aside an advanced calculus book to choose Selected Works of Nietzsche, something she had previously dismissed as a waste of time 20.
Special Summer Training
By the beginning of the Special Training Class, Suzune’s ankle no longer interferes with her activities. She joins Tang Yu and Ayanokoji in Group Three for a three-day project on optimizing the campus power structure. Their project receives the highest group score, despite Manabu criticizing its lack of innovation 21 22 23.
During the resource-allocation simulation, Suzune is assigned to the Finance Faction under Nagumo’s supervision. He pressures her to use her personal charm in negotiations. With Tang Yu’s advice, she turns the assignment into a public alliance with the Military Faction, completing her task without submitting to the humiliation Nagumo intended 24 25.
She finishes third in the training class’s final assessment, behind Ayanokoji and Tang Yu. The assessment combines a difficult examination with eight hours in an enclosed room, rising temperatures, and limited water 26.
New Semester and Debate Tournament
Suzune identifies Ryuen’s interference within Class D and arranges a private meeting with Tang Yu, Hirata, and Sudō. She advocates gathering evidence of coercion rather than responding with violence, and joins their effort to protect Karuizawa and prevent the class from turning against itself 31 32.
For the Debate Tournament, she oversees academic guidance, helps organize research and coordination roles, and rehearses with her classmates. She also relays Manabu’s warning that Tsukishiro is interested in students who undergo “abnormal changes,” particularly Karuizawa 36 37 38 39.
Suzune delivers Class D’s opening statement on meritocracy-based education. Despite Tsukishiro’s mental interference during the event, Class D wins the tournament. After the subsequent hearing, she tells Tang Yu that Tsukishiro’s rhythmic tapping blurred her thoughts and nearly made her accept his proposals 43 44 46.
Appearance
- Hair: Long and black, usually worn down early in the story; tied into a neat ponytail for kendo and at the beginning of the new semester 1 27 31.
- Face and expression: Delicate features, sharp eyes, and a cold, stern expression that discourages others from approaching 1 3.
- Posture and dress: Habitually stands and sits very straight; wears the school uniform with particular attention to neatness, including a carefully pinned collar badge 3 21.
- Visible strain: During the one-point defeats, she develops dark circles, duller hair, and a stiffer posture from sustained pressure and overwork 16 18.
Personality
Suzune is confident, aloof, and intensely competitive. She initially keeps apart from her classmates and judges Tang Yu harshly before knowing him. Tang Yu’s system identifies fear of failure and strong emotional reactions to challenges against her competence as central vulnerabilities 1 2 3.
Her disciplined exterior conceals loneliness and a persistent need for recognition. Winning matters to her not merely as a result, but as evidence that she deserves to be seen independently of Manabu. Consequently, repeated defeats can destabilize her even when her actual scores remain excellent 9 17 18.
Her willingness to cooperate develops gradually. She first accepts Tang Yu’s academic advice, later acknowledges the importance of help after her rescue, and eventually takes the initiative in organizing classmates for the debate. Tang Yu observes that her earlier isolation is being replaced by a genuine sense of belonging to Class D 4 14 37.
