As soon as Ryuji Kanzaki's calm, analytical tone faded, Yun Lan's teasing reply still lingered faintly in the air. The classroom's din offered a natural cover, but Kanzaki was clearly not content with surface-level pleasantries and speculation. Just as Yun Lan turned to take his seat and the distance between them narrowed to a certain threshold, Kanzaki suddenly leaned forward. In a quick movement that was slightly out of place with his usual upright bearing, yet somehow utterly natural, he moved close to Yun Lan's ear.
The gesture instantly broke the usual rules of social distance, creating an atmosphere that felt intimate, even a little oppressive. Kanzaki lowered his voice, his breath lightly brushing Yun Lan's ear, but his words cut clearly through the morning commotion:
"I don't think someone who likes to observe from behind the scenes, weigh things up, and prefers to act as a 'puppet master' rather than a performer in the spotlight..." He precisely used the term "puppet master" to sum up the impression Yun Lan had left on some of the clubs the previous day, as well as the calculating nature of his behavior. "...would greet a classmate like me, who isn't a close friend and has no direct interests tied to yours, for no reason other than that you're in a 'good mood.' It doesn't fit the principle of efficiency, and it deviates from the baseline of behavioral logic you've demonstrated so far."
He drew back slightly, letting Yun Lan see his eyes behind his glasses—so calm they seemed almost mechanical. There was not the slightest trace of a joke in them, only pure analysis and curiosity.
"What do you mean, someone who isn't a close friend and has no direct interests tied to mine? You're my dearest friend, my trusted companion, my brother in arms."
Yun Lan answered teasingly.
"Tell me," Kanzaki said, his voice still low enough for only the two of them to hear. "Is there some special 'plan' or 'expectation' for after school tomorrow that's made you temporarily 'deviate' from your usual code of conduct, to the point that your emotions are showing and you need to release or conceal them through extra social interaction?"
He had even named the specific time, after school tomorrow, so this clearly wasn't a baseless guess. Perhaps he had noticed Akane Tachibana's movements after she left the gym the day before. Perhaps he had picked up rumors from another source that the Student Council might approach the new students. Then, combining that with Yun Lan's "out-of-character" initiative that morning, he had pieced together a guess that came close to the truth.
The lazy smile on Yun Lan's face didn't fade, but a trace of surprise and admiration flickered deep in his eyes. He maintained his listening pose until Kanzaki finished, then slowly straightened and stepped back to a more comfortable distance between classmates. He wasn't flustered at having his secret exposed. Instead, he seemed to have found an interesting opponent in a game of deduction.
"You really are..." Yun Lan clicked his tongue softly and refocused on Kanzaki, his praise undisguised. "Frighteningly perceptive, and incredibly good at connecting the dots." He acknowledged the basis of the other boy's deduction. "With just a little over a day's worth of scattered information, you've already built a preliminary 'behavioral baseline' for me... I suppose that's Kanzaki for you."
He folded his arms and leaned against the edge of his desk, relaxed, as though discussing an interesting subject that happened to involve him.
"From the perspective of pure everyday behavioral analysis, your deduction makes sense." Yun Lan shrugged, his tone light. "A 'puppet master' suddenly stepping into the spotlight to offer a friendly greeting certainly raises the question of 'why.' As for the reason..."
He paused, seemingly picking the best way to phrase it, then offered an answer that sounded a little vague, yet seemed to touch on some real changes within him:
"I really am in a good mood today. But this 'good mood' isn't entirely because of the 'good thing' I'm expecting." His gaze drifted toward the window before quickly returning to Kanzaki's expectant face. "It's more likely the result of some kind of... inner 'reconciliation.'"
"Reconciliation?" Kanzaki raised an eyebrow slightly. The word went beyond the purely external behavioral reasoning he had just been doing.
"Yeah." Yun Lan nodded. His smile softened, and a rare, almost introspective honesty crept into his expression. "Put simply, I faced and accepted some thoughts and feelings I might have been avoiding or hadn't clearly defined before. I untangled a few knots and confirmed a few coordinates... It feels pretty good. It makes me think that occasionally 'deviating' from an efficient but perhaps overly rigid 'code of conduct' and saying hello doesn't cost me anything. In fact... it's kind of refreshing."
His words were a little abstract and didn't point to any specific event or person, but the sincerity of his emotions came through in his tone. This was no longer mere performance or polite evasion, but a genuine sharing of sorts.
Ryuji Kanzaki listened quietly, his eyes behind his glasses blinking rapidly a few times, like a precision instrument processing information at high speed. He didn't ask what Yun Lan meant by "thoughts and feelings." That went beyond the scope of his rational interest, and overstepped social boundaries. But he had caught the key words: face, accept, reconcile, coordinates. They pointed to an adjustment and confirmation of Yun Lan's inner state, rather than a mere reaction to some external event. To an extent, that explained the "behavioral deviation" he had observed.
"I see." Kanzaki finally nodded slowly, then turned back toward his desk and picked up his pen. "An adjustment to your behavioral pattern driven by internal motivations. The variables and specific parameters are unknown, but it logically explains the phenomenon I observed. Thanks for clearing that up, Lan."
His tone returned to complete calm and objectivity, as though their near-whispered exchange had been nothing more than a rigorous verification of data. Yet the instant he lowered his head to take notes, the corner of his mouth seemed to twitch almost imperceptibly, as if silently saying: Interesting.
"And besides, there's no need to be so formal between us. You're my dearest friend, my trusted companion, my brother in arms. We're bound together by fate, too."
"Class is about to start. You should get back to your seat."
"Do we have swimming class today?"
After returning to his seat, Yun Lan asked Ryuji Kanzaki.
"What, are you looking forward to it?"
Ryuji Kanzaki glanced sideways at Yun Lan. He felt that he had seen right through him.
"Everyone appreciates beauty."
"Does Ichinose know you're like this? Won't she get jealous?"
"That's unusual. I can't believe I'm hearing an emotional word like 'jealous' from you."
"I'm not a robot. Isn't that normal? And the swimming class you mentioned is second period."
"Really? Then I'll have to make a good impression."
"Then why did you say that just now? You're obviously looking forward to it."
Ryuji Kanzaki couldn't help but call him out. What a hypocritical man.
"I just get a little excited when I think about showing off in front of my classmates."
"Maybe I'll get to experience the vibrant high-school life for once!"
"..."
"I think you're already living the vibrant high-school life."
