History
Chairman Sakayanagi introduces Yun Lan to Student Council President Manabu Horikita shortly after Yun Lan enters the academy. Their first meeting is formal and restrained, ending with a handshake and the chairman’s encouragement that they communicate more 4.
During the entrance ceremony, Manabu presents the academy’s meritocratic principle: students’ prior achievements, family background, and entrance examination scores are reset, leaving only what they accomplish within the school as the standard of judgment 6.
After observing Yun Lan’s large-scale acquisition of private points through club challenges, Manabu changes plans to attend the club recruitment event personally. He then instructs Akane to invite Yun Lan from first-year Class B for a Student Council talent assessment 18 19.
Akane approaches Yun Lan after the recruitment event, confirms his interest, and offers him an interview that bypasses the normal initial screening stages 20. Yun Lan applies with “Because I want to” as his stated reason and selects Vice President and Secretary as his desired positions 21. Despite Akane’s reservations over Yun Lan’s unconventional methods and answers, Manabu accepts him and assigns him to serve as a secretary 22.
Political Role
Manabu recruits Yun Lan partly as a counterweight to Vice President Miyabi Nagumo. Manabu fears that Nagumo’s radical policies could intensify internal competition, deplete students’ points, and cause significant numbers of students to drop out 24.
Nagumo’s broad second-year support gives him a major advantage in the coming succession struggle. Yun Lan’s entry into the Council is intended to introduce a variable capable of containing Nagumo’s influence or confronting him directly if necessary 24.
