Classification and Registry
The International Anomalous Research and Containment Association (I.A.R.C.) uses “UMA” as a proper term for mysterious creatures whose manifestations threaten or affect the Surface World. The organization researches them, issues related commissions, and attempts to prevent their harm to ordinary people. 39
Confirmed creatures are catalogued in the Directory of Anomalous Creatures, commonly called the Black Book. The directory is periodically reassessed as new intelligence changes an entity’s estimated threat. 19
| Rank | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Calamity Rank | Highest documented classification |
| Kingdom Rank | Below Calamity Rank |
| Town Rank | Major threat within an urban area; Mist Walker is classified at this level 19 |
| Caution Rank | Lowest listed classification; still warrants investigation and, where necessary, removal |
Rank is based on an overall evaluation of a UMA’s individual strength, prior impact, and potential threat to humanity. A classification is not permanent and may change with circumstances. 39
General Characteristics
- UMAs can distort their surroundings merely by existing, producing abnormal lights, sounds, smells, or aetheric disturbances. 8 9
- Their forms range from biological or semi-biological creatures to shadow-like, elemental, and mechanically altered entities. 14 25 47
- Some exhibit high intelligence, adaptive hunting behavior, specialized abilities, and deliberate use of their environments. 8 10
- UMA remains and long-exposed objects may become spiritual materials, usable in Grotesque Armament. 16 30 39
- I.A.R.C. instruments such as Aether Fluctuation Detectors can track disturbances caused by UMA activity. 9 12
Documented Examples
| UMA | Rank | Known traits |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Sea Resentful Woman | Not stated | Pale humanoid sea creature with tangled long hair and tentacles; appears active on calm nights near the full moon. Light and fire repel it. 1 3 7 |
| Mist Walker | Town Rank | The UMA associated with the Jack the Ripper murders. It moves as a three-dimensional shadow, emits a sulphurous odor, targets isolated women, and feeds on organs. Red pigment can reveal its outline; alchemical bullets and reflected light destabilize it. 7 8 14 15 |
| Gremlin | Caution Rank | Sprite-like bio-mechanical UMA with an obsessive attraction to machinery, brass, steel, and steam. Gremlins absorb aetheric ripples from operating machinery and build Mechanical Shrines from stolen industrial materials. 25 |
| Mechanical Wraith | Not stated | A desecrated fusion of UMA-created machinery and human souls. Its clockwork body and unstable consciousness make it substantially more dangerous than an ordinary Gremlin. 28 |
| Loch Ness Monster / Primordial Dragon Species | Initially commissioned as Caution Rank; true rank not stated | An ancient semi-elemental guardian of Loch Ness. Its galaxy-like body is immune to pure physical attacks but can be forcibly anchored into material form by runic binding. 35 38 47 48 |
Materials and Armament
UMA corpses, components, and spiritually altered objects can be used to produce Grotesque Armament—equipment that inherits characteristics from the creature or materials involved. Multiple material types may be combined, though doing so can carry risks. 39
- Biological materials — Gremlin claws and crystal lenses retain mechanical properties and residual curse effects after death. 30 31
- Core crystals — A defeated Mist Walker leaves behind a black crystal containing residual supernatural energy and emotional afterimages. 15 16
- Spiritually infiltrated objects — Items repeatedly occupied, altered, or fixated upon by UMAs can become more stable spiritual materials than body parts. 30
- Curse-derived equipment — The Spellbreaker Bracer uses Chaos Brass influenced by Gremlin curses to create a directed mechanical-paralysis field. 33 34
I.A.R.C. Handling Protocols
- I.A.R.C. commissions may require hunters to identify a UMA, determine its rank, gather ecological evidence, drive it away, or eliminate it. 21 35
- Not all UMAs are to be hunted immediately. The Loch Ness investigation explicitly prioritizes observation and research, prohibiting proactive hunting unless threatened. 35
- Information on confirmed creatures is treated as a major operational resource; submitting intelligence, hunting dangerous UMAs, and recovering spiritual materials earns investigators points. 19
